Extremely sore throat. How long will it last?

I tested positive on Sunday. Since last night my throat has been unbearably sore. I can't swallow. I can't sleep. Paracetamol and Ibuprofen are no help. About to try a throat spray. Has anyone else had this? Is there anything else I can do. Have also tried gargling with salty water.

Mine was so painful, probably for 6/7 days.

Jakemans cough sweets were my saviour!

HowCanItBeSoSore · 19/04/2022 18:03

Bloody hell! A week! That's ages! Will look for Jakeman's. Thank you.

If you can bear it, eating a raw clove of garlic helps.

HowCanItBeSoSore · 19/04/2022 18:09

@Rainbowrocket hmmm will see how I go. That sounds pretty bad

Yes! It turned out that it was Strep and needed antibiotics. I called 111 in the middle of the night and they emailed me a prescription to pick up first thing. I also took cocodamol. It was horrible.

I kept looking out for an excruciatingly sore throat as a symptom on these MN Covid threads, but I think what I had was in addition to having Covid. I have finished the course of antibiotics, and it has gone away, but I still have a tightness in my throat.

I found using a humidifier really helped my throat but not sure if that'll be the same for everyone

Motherl0de · 19/04/2022 18:38

Strepsils, and gargling with alcohol mouthwash or dissolvable aspirin.
Mine took about 5 days to go.

HippeePrincess · 19/04/2022 18:41

Mine was awful for 2/3 days but particularly bad for 24 hours, just kept drinking warm squash and had strepsils.

CorsicaDreaming · 19/04/2022 18:42

I've got covid at moment. Day8.
Sore throat, tickly cough and chesty cough at same time. Never managed that before!

These are brilliant but you need the purple triple action ones.

Mine was terrible but easing up a lot now.

lorisparkle · 19/04/2022 18:48

Keep an eye on the sore throat as even though you have Covid it maybe something in addition. I had a terrible sore throat before Covid and ended up in hospital with quinsy. I had no idea people still got quinsy so it is good to be aware if the sore throat gets worse.

3.5 weeks. It was the thing that just wouldn't shift. The rest were all intermittent symptoms.

@ChoiceMummy that makes me want to cry. I was a bit complacent about covid but it's awful!

It is quite common with COVID to get ulcers in your throat, and it hurts so bad!

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7434495/

I couldn't see them for a while until the swelling started going down, but there were multiple ulcers in the back and side of my throat. So worth having a good look with a torch.

NICE have guidelines cks.nice.org.uk/topics/aphthous-ulcer/
Recommend corsdyl mouth wash and off label beclomethasone spray or inhaler, plus a B12 supplement, and obviously lots of pain killers.

You'll be pleased to know they resolve fairly quickly.
