Post-Covid insomnia

I really don't know how to sleep properly anymore after Covid. I've stopped all napping during the day. No caffeine after 12pm. But I'm fully awake at 2am - 4/5am every night. I'm only getting about 5 hours sleep and it feels awful. Anymore else?

I currently have covid and can't sleep even though I'm exhausted.

OutlookStalking · 16/04/2022 05:06

Im similar time wise but no idea if jt qas covid/menapause or anxiety. Its killing me.

I don't go back to sleep at 5 if I have ti get up at 6 either.

CorsicaDreaming · 16/04/2022 05:50

Yup same. I've been awake since then.

Sometimes magnesium capsules really helps me.
Sometimes not.

Sometimes Passiflora tincture helps
Sometimes blue Nytol.

Currently I've actually got covid so not sure anything will help at mo...

Mine has been since the Pandemic started in Wuhan though. I watched it unfolding with a sense of impending doom from January 2020 and just feel I've been in a kind of hyper alert watchful state ever since. I can't read novels any more which I used to love doing. And I can't sleep. I think they are quite linked for me.

I'm hoping that perhaps now I've actually had it, I might be able to relax... but I'm not holding out much hope tbh...

Have you tried taking melatonin? You can buy it at Biovea. There are 2 types, immediate release and prolonged release, so see which works better for you. 3mg is the usual dose.

Otherwise Nytol (or supermarket own brand Sleep Aid with the same ingredient that starts with a P) is an antihistamine and can work well after Covid. You can take both. My DD takes 50mg Nytol and 3mg Melatonin immediate release, prescribed by her consultant.

There's growing evidence that Covid has upset the mast cells which release histamine (amongst others) which is why an antihistamine at night can help with sleep.

It also helps to have some white noise or a fan on to help with hyper vigilance.

That is really helpful @BonnesVacances thank you.

Porcupineintherough · 16/04/2022 08:15

Yep, same, 2 years now. @BonnesVacances' suggestions are good. I use melatonin and audiobooks to getst least some sleep.

L0stinCyberspace · 16/04/2022 18:09

@CorsicaDreaming you are echoing my experience exactly. Struggling to read novels, doom, can't seem to relax.

@BonnesVacances I have tried melatonin a few times and it seems to have the opposite effect, I wake up even more Confused. I also have a Spanish supplement that has melatonin, lemonbalm, passiflira and valerian in it. It does nothing Confused. In the end I took a valium last night but that's no solution really. I didn't realise you could combine nytol and melatonin - will give that a try thanks.
