close contact text - is it genuine?

Pinkyxx · 14/04/2022 20:27

I received a text message today from NHS-NoReply saying

You have been in close contact with someone who has the Covid-19 Omicron variant. you must order a PCR Testing kit here

does anyone know if this is genuine? I stupidly clicked on the link but it just opened a blank page..

Of course it's not genuine.

Furrbabymama87 · 14/04/2022 20:30

I had it. I knew it was fake because it was about 2 days after I was able to come out of isolation after actually having covid. I ignored it and got nothing else from whoever sent it.

Mindymomo · 14/04/2022 20:31

No, it’s a scam, it used to take you to a fake nhs page, where you click a link to pay for a test, then your card gets scammed for larger amounts. It shows a number, whereas texts from nhs will never show a number.

Pinkyxx · 14/04/2022 20:45

there's no number on the text, it's come with just NHS-NoReply

I had one of these a couple of days ago, it’s fake, I don’t think track and trace is still operating.

NewYearCalavicci · 14/04/2022 21:38

Haven't had one recently but I had a lot of fake Track and Trace text messages when it first came out and I would say that one is probably a fake too

PinkBuffalo · 14/04/2022 21:40

I had one a while ago it was definitely fake as I was an actual close contact at the time and just had to take lft for 7 days back then

Nelliephant1 · 14/04/2022 21:46

It's genuine.

My son has been getting texts left right and centre over this last week as there's been a big outbreak at his work, the number of texts about close contacts have tallied exactly with people testing positive.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/04/2022 22:03

The wording doesn't sound right to me

TheSmallAssassin · 14/04/2022 22:09

No, it's not genuine, that link is not to an NHS or government website, they end nhs.uk or gov.uk - anything else is fake.

@Nelliephant1 your son's texts are just a coincidence.

Anyone can send texts that say they come from anywhere they like (using online services), so never go by that.

mintfuschia · 15/04/2022 01:30

Definitely fake.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 15/04/2022 08:20

Test and trace has closed and as you don't have to test anymore/pay for any testing so they can't say you must take one I'd assume fake...

RobinOnTheTable · 15/04/2022 11:21

Definitely a scam.

liveforsummer · 15/04/2022 11:39

Well I'm pretty sure you don't need a PCR now as a close contact so I'd say scam. Even if it wasn't I'd be ignoring it at this point.

WhatHaveIFound · 15/04/2022 11:47

No, it's not genuine. When you report a positive test they don't even ask for close contacts any more.

GoadyToady · 15/04/2022 14:25

Scam, nobody knows who’s got omicron anymore

CrocodilesCry · 15/04/2022 21:24

It's a scam. Hopefully MN will delete your post or at least remove the URL you've shared in it.

ImaniMumsnet · 15/04/2022 21:36

Hi OP,

Just a quick note to say we have edited your post to remove the spam link just to make sure others don't click on it.

Looneytune253 · 15/04/2022 21:57

Defo a scam considering there's no testing for close contacts now. Don't give it a second thought

XenoBitch · 16/04/2022 00:10

Scam. I have never checked in anywhere, or used the app. I got this text.
Delete and ignore.

tanqueray10 · 16/04/2022 07:58

Definitely a scam! My mum had this happen to her and she unfortunately went along with it and paid for the test only to have her ‘bank’ call her the next day to say she’d been a victim of fraud and asking for account information. Luckily she smelt a rat at this point- it wasn’t her bank calling at all but all part of an elaborate scam.
Makes me so angry that these people can sleep at night knowing they are stealing elderly people’s pensions from them.

Pinkyxx · 16/04/2022 10:53

Thanks all, I’ve deleted the text!
