This has made me feel sick to my stomach. Those poor babies and parents.
It seems like such a massive overreaction as well?!

I can’t seem to link but it’s a Daily Mail article.

I can’t believe they are doing this!

@LiquoricePickle

I mean the still high death rate and the fact that people don't have to wear masks or isolate.

I agree with you that it will become endemic here and that more elderly people need vaccinating, but I don't think there a need to abandon all sensible precautions.

You know that this winter's excess deaths have been average?

And you know about the much publicised harms that Covid lockdowns have wrought on large sections of society?

You are deluded.

greenteafiend · 09/04/2022 14:07

That's lovely for you. I'm very happy that my children have experienced normal life for pretty much their whole lives here....

Calm before the storm, frankly.

Any foreigner choosing to stay in China right now needs to think very carefully about the wisdom of this--especially if they have children

It's not even really about COVID any more. It's the fact that you are living at the mercy of a government that does not respect the rule of law, will do almost anything to avoid being humiliated on the international stage, and is viciously eager to blame foreigners/outsiders/fifth columnists/stooges for absolutely everything and anything that goes wrong in China.

The Chinese government has now developed a societal framework for incarcerating people at will, removing their children from them, monitoring their every movement and stopping them from leaving the country. They are not going to relinquish any of this even when the acute phase of COVID eventually passes.

What would you define as sensible precautions?
bellac11 · 09/04/2022 14:11

This is the problem with anyone believing or wanting zero covid.

They are inhumane at times as a country.

THREAD from someone in Shanghai

mmmmmmghturep · 09/04/2022 14:31

IMO the State of Fear threads should be reinstated because many who were on there have been proved right. I wonder what the poster who worked so damn hard to get that thread removed would say about this Shanghai lockdown. I suspect they would cheer it on.

HardyBuckette · 09/04/2022 14:38

Yes, and it's been obvious for a while now what was going to happen when covid re-emerged in China, as it was always going to do. There was never any possibility that they'd swerve Omicron, and once that thing is in, it's in. After that, paranoid nationalist authoritarians gonna paranoid nationalist authoritarian.

It's going to be hideous, and I'd agree with the poster upthread who said she wouldn't want to be a foreigner there at the moment.

Another one, desperate people looting a market in Shanghai:

Can't blame them.

Scianel · 09/04/2022 14:54

Me neither. You've got to do what you've got to do to keep yourself and your family alive.

GiveMeNovocain · 09/04/2022 20:32

How on earth is catching covid worse than starving? Surely if you care about health you want a healthy population who can generally get over a virus. How does lockdown help anyone stay healthy and well? It makes the most vulnerable more vulnerable. We need to have deviant public services when people need them but taking away people's chance to exercise, but healthy food, get medicine and stay mentally well and part of their community is madness. Don't get me started on what we did to children, the elderly, people living with abuse... lockdown is the most counterproductive policy if you actually give a shit about vulnerable people

What's happening in China is beyond awful but what happened here was completely unjustified too. Shame on people who wanted longer, harder lockdowns

mmmmmmghturep · 09/04/2022 23:10

You might be interested to know that Jared Nelson has stated (just in the last week) that he has no plans on moving from China - since you're using him on this thread. He considers China his home and loves the country and its people.

Dghgcotcitc · 10/04/2022 07:32

I think loving the country you are in and having no intentions of mi I got from it and agreeing with government policy are not mutually exclusive!!..or do you really think every one if the 66 million people in the U.K. agrees with boris Johnson’s policies just be virtue of continuing to live here?!..very odd way of thinking!

GiveMeNovocain · 10/04/2022 07:50

Decent not deviant public services obviously. What I'd give for an edit button!

No - where did I say that? Hmm

Implying Jared Nelson and his family are suffering incredibly under a terrible regime is another thing, though.

NotDonna · 10/04/2022 07:52

Same in Hong Kong. Absolutely barbaric.

greenteafiend · 10/04/2022 09:12

He considers China his home and loves the country and its people.

He needs to be really careful.

We do need non Chinese living in China, to report on what's going on. I don't think people with young children should be risking life in China. And when I say "careful," I'm not talking about the sodding stupid boring COVID virus, which long-term will be endemic everywhere anyway.

Scianel · 10/04/2022 09:22

And yet he still makes the current actions of the authorities sound horrific, disproportionate, barbaric and dangerous.
Imagine how bad it would sound if someone who couldn't stand the place and was desperate to leave was tweeting about it.
Except I suppose they wouldn't. That wouldn't be safe for them, would it?

I'm fairly sure he's aware he needs to be careful - he lives in China and reports on Chinese politics and culture.

BTW, the sodding stupid boring COVID virus? That's offensive to all those who have died, who had suffered badly with the virus, who have struggled in lockdowns or have been frontline workers throughout.

HardyBuckette · 10/04/2022 10:34

I'm one of the people you mention, and it isn't offensive to me. Speak for yourself.

HesterShaw1 · 10/04/2022 10:52

No one has the right not to be offended, as Stephen Fry said.

I too am fucking bored and pissed off with the endless preoccupation with and over reaction to Covid. I see people in the street in a fresh breeze wearing masks and just want to point and laugh, though don't of course. I inwardly roll my eyes. If that's offensive then 🤷‍♀️

Scianel · 10/04/2022 10:54

Please not the "I'm offended" line again. It's such a blatant attempt at shutting down any opposing point of view.
People's offense is their own to deal with.

bellac11 · 10/04/2022 10:55

Im a front line worker and Ive struggled in lockdown and I say its a stupid boring virus too.
