This has made me feel sick to my stomach. Those poor babies and parents.
It seems like such a massive overreaction as well?!

I can’t seem to link but it’s a Daily Mail article.

I can’t believe they are doing this!

@CheedarChese

It is odd. It's like an undeclared bio-eonomic war started by China. But the UK government realise this so have played their cards accordingly to escape the clutches of Chinese control via covid waves and their knock on effect of stiffling competing or threatening economies of the free world.
Say what?
chateaudif · 08/04/2022 05:21

@RandomMess Thanks. We're doing ok for now. We have quite a lot of pasta. We no longer have full fat milk for our baby, and we've no fresh fruit. What's scary is there's no indication at all at when it could end.

LiquoricePickle · 08/04/2022 05:49

I'm in China too. Close to SH. The government have now said that children will not be separated from their parents.

LiquoricePickle · 08/04/2022 05:54

And for what it's worth, thinking that a zero covid approach is, on balance, better than what's happening in the UK, doesn't make me blind to the current issues. Which, by the way, I'm experiencing first hand.

chateaudif · 08/04/2022 07:34

The rules are a bit vague - the statements seems to suggest only under certain conditions - if the parents tested negative, children would still be separate, and children could only be escorted if they have "special needs".

Aren't you worried that Zero-Covid is unsustainable?

user1477391263 · 08/04/2022 07:37

Liquorice, what does "what's happening in the UK" mean--are you talking about endemic COVID? Because China will end up with endemic COVID as well, sooner or later. It's just a question of how long it it before it gets to that stage. Even NZ now has COVID everywhere in the country.

China should have vaccinated more of its elderly. 50% of over 80s being completely unvaxxed is just not very good.

MMMarmite · 08/04/2022 07:41

I think a zero COVID strategy was the right one in the early days, with no vaccines and a less transmissible variant so that countries feasibly could stop transmission. Whereas now the virus has changed and our treatments have changed, its almost impossible to stop it now, and the consequences of catching COVID are lower, so the balance has changed.

Would never advocate separating children and parents though.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/04/2022 07:46

We have family in Shanghai and they are very scared right now. Children are 4 and 9 months.

Yep.

Zero covid has been a delusion since the very early days of the virus, and China hasn't even used the time the delay bought them to sort out vaccination. It's awful.

No, they've officially stated that parents can now accompany children regardless.
LiquoricePickle · 08/04/2022 15:32

I mean the still high death rate and the fact that people don't have to wear masks or isolate.

I agree with you that it will become endemic here and that more elderly people need vaccinating, but I don't think there a need to abandon all sensible precautions.

LiquoricePickle · 08/04/2022 15:35

That's true about over 80s, but the number of over 3s to working adults who have been vaccinated is quite high.

I have a few contacts who are sorting out deliveries, especially if nappies and formula so please do PM me if your family needs and I can put you in touch with them .
Frazzled2207 · 08/04/2022 15:39

I have read this too and is horrifying.

What on Earth is the exit strategy from this?

Even if they did manage to get rid of it- which with omicron they won’t- how do they intend to remain zero covid? It just isn’t possible.

Andante57 · 08/04/2022 15:43

I’d love to hear what all those praising China now think

So would I.

Scianel · 08/04/2022 17:20

What's happening in the UK is in the main normal life. I have to say that feels somewhat preferable to being locked in my home with no food or having my children taken from me.

So kind that you'd allow us to keep our children with us whilst under indefinite house arrest with no access to food supplies and watching our dog beaten to death
HesterShaw1 · 08/04/2022 20:00

This is the country certain posters in here were saying we should emulate in our response to Covid. As more time goes by, I'm more and more staggered and disgusted by them. They know who they are

HesterShaw1 · 08/04/2022 20:28

@HardyBuckette

It's just awful. What the fuck is going to happen to all the locked in undocumented workers living unofficially in the big cities I dread to think? Zero covid my arse.
My thinking precisely. This isn't about Covid. It's the CCP flexing its muscles.

That's lovely for you. I'm very happy that my children have experienced normal life for pretty much their whole lives here....
MMMarmite · 09/04/2022 06:53

@GiveMeNovocain yes that's exactly what I said, and what every country with a zero covid strategy did. Lovely. Hmm

HesterShaw1 · 09/04/2022 13:59

People who advocate or advocated zero Covid are frankly deranged. It's impossible.

And they were quite happy to "stay home" while lower classes brought them stuff to enable this.

Another update from an expat in Shanghai.

HesterShaw1 · 09/04/2022 14:04

There will be people literally going hungry or starving in their homes. And this is preferable?

It's simply unbelievable.

I want to hear what the zero Covid zealots have to say about this. This is the reality of pursuing a zero Covid strategy in a densely populated country. This is what they were advocating.

Thank god our government finally saw sense
