Son tested positive again

DS tested positive 2 weeks ago and he went back to college last Monday, after 2 negative tests. He wasn't unwell and didn't have any symptoms. On Friday, he felt ill, with a sore throat and headache, he did a test which was negative. He's just done another now and it is positive. Is it possible to get it again so soon? Should I book him a PCR test?

I think he should get a PCR test.

There is yet another new variant (this will keep happening) , so it's perfectly possible he's caught Covid again.

Thanks, I have booked him a test.

Two weeks is too quick for a reinfection surely?? I've heard anecdotally on here of reinfection after 5, 6, 7, 8 weeks, but surely it's not possible after 2 weeks?!

If he was asymptomatic last time and has symptoms this time is it possible that last time was a false positive? Did you repeat the LFT last time around and get more than one positive?

I'm not sure a PCR would help in this case as if it's positive there's no way of knowing if it's from infection 2 weeks ago or a new infection.

Dd had it twice within a short space of time. First time at Christmas with no symptoms, tested positive when me and dp had it. A few weeks later she had symptoms after an outbreak in her class. It seems some people like your son or my Dd are really unlucky. Me and dp did not catch it the second time she had it, despite that she was coughing and sneezing on us - we'd had it with symptoms a few weeks before.

I was told the second time around that Dd did not need to confirm by pcr but I did one anyway.

Hope he feels better soon!

@BlackInk Thanks for your reply. He repeated the LFT and also had a positive PCR. He did 2 negative LFT before returning to college and also one on Friday, when he started to feel ill again. It seems like it could be a new infection unfortunately.

@Kage30 Thanks, that's interesting to hear about your DD and yes, they have been really unlucky. I have booked a PCR test for him, as this has completely wiped him out and he has different symptoms to what we all had 2 weeks ago.
