One negative lft - definitely not covid?!

I'm not ill myself.. so not asking for me really. I had covid not too long ago and lft picked it up before my symptoms started but I was testing regularly as Dp had it. But lft's can be hit and miss right?!

Close relative is feeling pretty rough, of course it could be any other cold or virus, but covid is pretty high in our area right now. A lot of people have it right now. She did one lft the day her symptoms started, which was negative and just thought well it's not covid and carried on.

But if you have symptoms (flu or cold like) is one negative lft enough to say well I haven't got covid? Or would you do them every day or a pcr? Although pcr testing js ending soon anyway!

They want to meet up but tbh I don't want their germs covid or not. I haven't got time to be sick!

Even if they had covid they are not obliged to isolate but most people I know that have it, still are!

What I meant is that they did one lft 3/4 days ago, now feeling more ill than they was! 😪

It took me 4 days of feeling rough before I finally got a positive!

HeadToToesNo · 14/03/2022 18:37

I think if they are ill with anything, covid or not, you are entirely within your rights to postpone until they are better.

QueenofLouisiana · 14/03/2022 18:38

A negative LFT just means that there isn’t a high enough viral load to cause a response. Could be that it really isn’t covid, there are other bugs around after all. Could also mean that it is covid, but that the viral load isn’t high enough at the point the test was taken.

Covid is rife in my school again, we are recommending that parents do a few tests if their children remain unwell.

Ifeellikedancing · 14/03/2022 18:38

I felt funny for 4 or 5 days before I got a positive lateral. I was isolating anyway as dp and ds both had already tested positive.

Jules912 · 14/03/2022 18:38

I had a negative LFT and a negative PCR the day my symptoms started! LFT the next day was positive though it was faint.

Kage30 · 14/03/2022 18:40

Thank you. I did think lft's can be hit and Miss but they were actually pretty accurate for us when Dp was a very close contact, then me and dc but many people I've spoken to say that lft's have not detected it for days!

Think I will avoid them for a week or so! Haven't got time to be ill so try and avoid germs ☺️

Yes they should totally do more LFTs or a PCR if they are feeling worse.

Friend of mine got a single positive LFT on her daughter then the next day was negative and she said, "oh it must have been a false positive" 🤦 I did point out to her it's more likely she was positive but not picked up the second day.

Kage30 · 14/03/2022 18:41

I will tell them they really should do another test! My other close relative was poorly last week with similar symptoms and also only did one lft which was negative!

I started feeling a bit unwell last Sunday evening with a sore throat. LFT Monday morning, Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening all negative.

Started feeling worse on Thursday. Did PCR on Saturday. Result came back yesterday. Negative. Still not feeling OK today. Did another LFT. Still negative.

Must be something other than COVID as these tests can't be ALL be wrong!

RamblingFar · 14/03/2022 18:57

Mine took 4 days to go positive.

EatYourFive · 14/03/2022 18:59

I have been feeling off since mid-last week and only tested positive today.

Mindymomo · 14/03/2022 19:11

I started feeling ill last Thursday, when my DH and DS tested positive. I only tested positive yesterday 4 days after symptoms started. I assumed I had it as I had the same awful symptoms as my family.

Meredusoleil · 14/03/2022 19:11

OMG really? Have you been testing every day?

I just keep thinking what if I have it but just with a very low viral load, so it's not being picked up on any of the tests 🤨

ItsSnowJokes · 14/03/2022 19:12

Husband felt ill since Saturday. Did an lft and it was negative. Felt worse Sunday did an lft and was negative. Got a temp later on and went for a pcr. That came back positive. Out of interest took an lft today and its negative. So they aren't picking it up on him. And it makes him worried about the day 5 and 6 ones now as it could show negative but he could still have it.

QuestionableDanceMoves · 14/03/2022 19:25

I started feeling unwell Friday night, worse Saturday, even worse yesterday and incredibly unwell overnight last night- tested every day, all negative, tested this morning which was negative. Went to work.
Got home from work this evening still feeling out of sorts but better than I was and I got a positive!

Seriously? Making me think I should keep testing every day at this rate 🤦
EatYourFive · 14/03/2022 22:07

@Meredusoleil yes tested daily, some days twice. In fact tested twice yesterday, both completely negative, and then got a very clear positive today.

QuestionableDanceMoves · 14/03/2022 22:13

Same @EatYourFive I think I did 3 tests at different points throughout the day yesterday and all were definitely negative, as was this mornings one. This evenings one was a very definite positive

Sunflowerx · 14/03/2022 22:35

@Meredusoleil I would definitely recommend it! I tested negative AM and PM Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday last week and got the darkest positive test I've ever seen on Thursday morning. Still testing strong positives now although symptoms are massively subsiding
