Cases rising at my dc's primary school

They had just started tentatively mixing year groups although still keeping the infants section and the juniors section separate. We were going to go to our first in person parents evening since 2019 next week. Now there are loads of staff off with it, one of the TA's is working in the office as there is no receptionist and parents evening is going to be over the phone again.

Is this happening everywhere or just where we live? I'm wondering whether to go back to testing my dc twice a week again.

Rife at my kids school plus we all have it too atm

Jules912 · 11/03/2022 10:52

I thought it was relatively low at my kids school but DS's just come down with it. Now realised that when contact tracing stopped they stopped telling us about cases though the lady in the office said they're not seeing huge numbers. They did have a massive outbreak in January though.

thelittlestrhino · 11/03/2022 11:01

Our school now has very few cases, most of the children and staff had it Jan/early Feb (most for the 2nd time) so we seem to be out the other side now!

Iggly · 11/03/2022 13:04

Rife at our DCs primary school!

RoseAndRose · 11/03/2022 13:06

It's everywhere - cases are up over 50% on the rolling 7 day total

It had gone down to under 350 per 100k, but is now just over 430

BluesCluesToo · 11/03/2022 13:09

It's bad here too. Cases in every class, 15 in one class, teachers off with it. My daughter tested positive today and she's sitting next to me shivering and aching, poor thing. Another dose of Calpol due soon.

NoSquirrels · 11/03/2022 13:10

Cases are rising everywhere.

ScrambledSmegs · 11/03/2022 13:19

It's everywhere.

I'm willing to bet that numbers are actually higher than the official numbers as loads of people probably aren't bothering to report positive cases.

BlackInk · 11/03/2022 13:27

Yep, dropping like flies in DD's primary school class and she tested positive for the first time yesterday. Desperately hoping that the rest of us don't catch it from her. DS had it in October and the rest of us dodged it then.

guineapigs · 11/03/2022 13:29

Ds class has loads of cases. Ds came home with headache on Wednesday. Lft negative. He woke up in Thursday with headache and really tired. Lft negative. Today woke up fresh and normal. Off to school.

Tynetime · 11/03/2022 13:35

Shed loads of cases in our Primary. They, are still sending kids home with symptoms.

SilverBirchWithout · 11/03/2022 13:47

It is everywhere at the moment. For this past month I’ve know more people personally who’ve caught Covid than the whole of the previous 2 years.
I live in a rural area in the Cotswolds.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/03/2022 14:28

1 child off in DS's class. No idea about the staff, how would you know unless your child was a close contact? Are your schools messaging and telling you every time a staff member is off even if they don't teach your child? Ours don't.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/03/2022 14:30

I'm not testing us any more though so wouldn't know either way.

Lilaclavenders · 11/03/2022 14:30

We've had no absences for weeks now!

Howshouldibehave · 11/03/2022 14:31

I have never heard of so many cases-so many families I know have at least one person with it. Half the staff are off at my school and my GP surgery is completely closed yesterday/today due to doctors off ill with it.

Lilaclavenders · 11/03/2022 14:32

We're not testing either, but certainly all pupils and teachers are well enough to come into school.

My dc has exams coming up so I'm thankful that things are running pretty normally again.

Lilaclavenders · 11/03/2022 14:34

Maybe different areas are affected differently.

We're in Greater London and had lots cases in January. Now we're pretty much back to normal!

Lindy2 · 11/03/2022 14:40

We're London/Surrey and and basically pretty much everyone had it in January/February. Over 30% of pupils and staff off in the same week at one point!

I can see national cases are rising fast but I'm not sure our local position is the same. I don't know of any current cases.

Parents' evenings have all been done online over a cloud (Zoom like) system. It's been very good and a lot better than by phone. Your school should look at that.

bellamountain · 11/03/2022 14:42

My children have it at the moment, even if it wasn't covid they wouldn't be at school. They are full of cold and quite rough with it.

Frosty1000 · 11/03/2022 14:48

My DS tested positive this morning. I stopped testing but he was very poorly so I thought I'd check. Only one off in his class so I thought it was going. I know a lot of parents who are poorly with it at the mo but kids in school 🤷‍♀️

SpringBeavers · 11/03/2022 15:43

yep rife and rising fast.

Postie had a parcel for us today and I said through the window we were isoalting and he said that he thought fully 50% of people he had parcels for today had covid in the house. Rang the dentist to cancel an appointment and her comment was they were getting appointments cancelled all over the place.

It is rising again.

raspberryjamchicken · 11/03/2022 17:13

Everywhere. Most of the few staff who had still not had it have now succumbed and all seem to have been feeling very unwell with it.

Walkaround · 11/03/2022 18:47

Yes, more confirmed cases amongst children currently in the primary school I work in than any previous time during the pandemic, and all happened very rapidly. Half of those off sick today have confirmed covid. The other half have described the same symptoms, but either haven’t tested their kids or have only done a LFT. Even with the classic covid symptoms, families are simply not bothering with PCRs - they are almost all relying on LFTs if testing at all, despite the fact the guidance is exactly the same now as it was before the law changed to no longer make testing and isolation an obligation rather than advisable, so it’s no surprise scores of children are suddenly getting covid or going off sick at exactly the same time. And now it has started to infect the staff, so it will be interesting to see what next week brings!!! The school is following the Government guidance, so sick staff members are not expected back for up to 10 days, depending on how quickly they test negative, meaning this could be extremely disruptive, judging by the number of people I know who continued to test positive for the entire 10 day duration. None of this is surprising, given the way the changes were advertised so as to imply the guidance was also being scrapped, not just the law. Many/most parents genuinely seem to be under the impression that pcrs are not really needed anymore and you can rely on a negative lft even if you have a hacking cough and a temperature; and that in any event, isolation is not expected, or if it is, it is for a maximum of 5 days and no need to keep doing lfts.
