Cases rising at my dc's primary school

They had just started tentatively mixing year groups although still keeping the infants section and the juniors section separate. We were going to go to our first in person parents evening since 2019 next week. Now there are loads of staff off with it, one of the TA's is working in the office as there is no receptionist and parents evening is going to be over the phone again.

Is this happening everywhere or just where we live? I'm wondering whether to go back to testing my dc twice a week again.

Largely forgotten here

derekthe1adyhamster · 11/03/2022 19:01

I work in a secondary school. So many teachers are off with it, mainly caught from their primary school aged kids! My DH has it, worked in retail throughout the pandemic, loads of his colleagues are now off.
Bizarrely, very few of the secondary pupils I worked with have it - I think they all caught it over the last 4 months

Lzzyisgod · 11/03/2022 19:01

Half dc2 class off with covid so 16 out of 28. He was symptomatic but neg on lft and confirmed on pcr.

I got a pcr for him because I work in an environment where covid could be a real risk if I passed it on and work still require me to wfh even with a close contact.

Lzzyisgod · 11/03/2022 19:02

Hes primary age I should add

I'm in London and tested positive 2 days ago. So many people I know have Covid at the moment, I know of 4 in my immediate family and friends (and only 2 of those have had any contact with each other).

Others feeling rough but negative LFTs so far.

Feels like a really bad cold.

Yeh, there’s loads here but can’t say I’m worried or care. DD1 has it at the mo, she’s been asymptomatic. We only realised cos she got swabbed in A&E which went too for an injury.

The quicker we stop testing, the better. DD had missed a week of school for no reason whatsoever 🤦🏼‍♀️

Itsthemaybelline · 11/03/2022 19:24

Of course it's increasing everywhere. There are zero mitigation measures.

Outer London here : I have it for 1st time, so do several friends, colleagues & members of my sports club

Thought it was a local wave but latest figures from Zoe app indicate 1 in 30 are positive at the moment: official numbers not capturing this as people are not testing/isolating

Yes, for most it's a cold like symptoms or no symptoms at all, especially if vaccinated and boosted!

DoobryWhatsit · 11/03/2022 21:01

School I teach in only had 3 kids 1 staff off today. My kids' primary school (6 miles down the road) they all seem to have it!

I'm a bit concerned by how poorly the kids are just now. My daughter tested positive this week, and she's had the same symptoms as everyone else in her class: raging fever, puking, hideous headache. I've not known 15 kids ALL to be so very poorly at the same time before (in the past, it's usually been that most of the kids are just a bit under the weather, with only one or two unlucky ones feeling properly rough with it).

That hasn’t been my experience at all. I’ve been off work for 2 weeks, chills/sweats/joint pain etc. As have a number of friends and colleagues

I think this is because booster has worn off, but the idea that this is ‘a little sniffle’ certainly is not the case for everyone

MiniDaffodils · 11/03/2022 21:04

The poor teachers. They warned it would happen but the government said schools were safe, teachers weren’t at risk of catching COVID as children didn’t spread it.

Good for you. You crack on.
FoldedCard · 11/03/2022 21:17

South West: 11 children off in my class today (42%), similar story in the other classes.
Two teachers, three TAs and the SENDCo all off.

We're hoping that once it's gone through the school, we'll more or less be immune...

SkankingMopoke · 11/03/2022 21:20

It's rife at my DCs' school too, despite having a large outbreak just before Xmas that took out over half the DCs and staff. TAs are teaching classes, classes are being combined, and every morning a few more parents come on the group chats to say their DC is now positive too. I'm hoping we've reached the peak now and things will be better from next week. There aren't many more people for it to go through!

WellThatsMeScrewed · 11/03/2022 21:23

Absolutely rife at both kids - primary and secondary - schools.

WellThatsMeScrewed · 11/03/2022 21:24

Also this is like a second infection wave, know loads of kids having it second time around

PatchworkElmer · 11/03/2022 21:26

Absolutely rampant here

dicdicnurse · 11/03/2022 21:30

It's everywhere around here in jan/Feb, we all had it, then it seemed to lessen and now it's gone crazy again! DD's headteacher has finally succumbed after 2 years. We are in wales so still testing and isolating.

30not13 · 11/03/2022 21:33

Very bad in my Scottish County. Its historically been under 100 per 100,000 riding to 800 odd in previous highest levels. This week is at over 1,100 per 100k.
Loads of people are on their second round of it since late 2021.

WhiteJellycat · 11/03/2022 21:38

I know more people with covid right now than at any other time in this pandemic. From personal experience those people haven't stopped all contact for the five days so that might explain the rise. I felt a bit odd last week but it wouldn't cross my mind to test anymore unless I was feeling ill. Ds was like death last week by lft negative so he only had one day off. I still test the kids but only if they seem unwell.

Chloemol · 11/03/2022 21:46

Cases are rising fast in my area. No idea if it’s schools or not

What do you expect when people can now go into work with it

mrshoho · 11/03/2022 22:24

Greater London here and my school is currently experiencing an outbreak. One class had to close and we were up to 15 staff absent by today. This is the highest number throughout the whole pandemic as we are a small school.

cantkeepawayforever · 11/03/2022 22:31

Ride here and rising daily (well over the 1 in 25 ONS figure). Elderly parent also has it, sufficiently long after booster to be a concern.
