Cases rising at my dc's primary school

They had just started tentatively mixing year groups although still keeping the infants section and the juniors section separate. We were going to go to our first in person parents evening since 2019 next week. Now there are loads of staff off with it, one of the TA's is working in the office as there is no receptionist and parents evening is going to be over the phone again.

Is this happening everywhere or just where we live? I'm wondering whether to go back to testing my dc twice a week again.

Secondary School I am at has most classes at least two kids off with covid and usually 3 or 4 others with "flu symptoms" etc. This is not something I've ever seen due to normal colds and flu seasons

Staff aren't off with it at the moment but that might change. Most people are no longer testing at all even when Ill. Then again kids being sent to school with blatant covid symptoms is not new so you resign yourself to catching it again dinner or later.

All very well saying my kid is fine but plenty of pupils are off for a week or more and the year 11's I teach are so disheartened with having different teachers all year and the last thing they need is staff going down with covid again and more disruption in the run in to exams. The co2 monitor in their classroom today said 3000ppm....!

Figgygal · 11/03/2022 22:50

Same
Both kids classes full of it and so they're now not allowed to eat in hall or attend assembly
Been asked to test both
I know more people with it this week than ever before

BigPurpleEgg · 11/03/2022 22:56

Absolutely rife here, dropping like flies in DDs school and a local nursery has had to close. My yoga class was half empty yesterday when it's always sold out

iwantareindeer · 11/03/2022 22:58

I really wanted to go out with my friends this weekend. Both my nearest friends have covid as do 2 of our children and half my friends class are out too. Kids feeling rough for 48 hours with temperatures and very tired generally. I thought we were done with this! Angry

Pootle40 · 11/03/2022 23:00

@Zolla

Yeh, there’s loads here but can’t say I’m worried or care. DD1 has it at the mo, she’s been asymptomatic. We only realised cos she got swabbed in A&E which went too for an injury.

The quicker we stop testing, the better. DD had missed a week of school for no reason whatsoever 🤦🏼‍♀️

100%. I wouldn't consider testing my children. If they're unwell they're off. Not sure why I need to know it's Covid ?! If they're well they're at school
DespairingHomeowner · 11/03/2022 23:00

@Chloemol

Cases are rising fast in my area. No idea if it’s schools or not

What do you expect when people can now go into work with it

Agree with this totally. And workplaces etc expect you in …

Was v unimpressed when organiser of local yoga class noticed I hadn’t come in - I told her I had Covid, and would skip next week to avoid infecting anyone (ie about day 7). No need apparently… no regard for the rest of her paying clients, half of whom are OAPs, FFS! 🙄

CagneyNYPD1 · 11/03/2022 23:01

Definitely on the increase here. I'm particularly hearing of school kids and their parents who had it in September or October are positive again.

DH and I had it 3 weeks ago. Very much like flu. 10 full days of isolation. A week later and I'm still not right.

The Ons data is very interesting.

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 11/03/2022 23:15

DD’s primary school is riddled with it suddenly after hardly any cases at all since the first lockdown ended. Dd and her best friend have it and the towns in their class of only ten. I’m not sure how many more but we had a meeting in school this week before anyone realised so had 2 years groups plus parents/grandparents plus younger siblings all in the one classroom together with only the adults wearing masks. I bet there’ll be loads more off next week. Shock

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 11/03/2022 23:16

*Twins not towns 🙄

Friends who went abroad at half term brought it back from Tenerife. Loads of kids had it over half term as did the mums now the dad's have it. No-one is bothering to report it though just taking over the counter meds and staying home

elliejjtiny · 14/03/2022 14:53

Thankyou everyone. I can't remember who asked but we are getting regular emails from school saying how many staff members are off with covid. We are now being told by school to test our children if they have cold/flu symptoms and parents evening has been cancelled until further notice.

I think this is interesting. Everyone I know is taking LFTs & isolating, but it doesn’t get picked up in official stats

SO many people I know have Covid right now …

SheepDogTed · 14/03/2022 15:19

@Waxonwaxoff0

1 child off in DS's class. No idea about the staff, how would you know unless your child was a close contact? Are your schools messaging and telling you every time a staff member is off even if they don't teach your child? Ours don't.
I don't think it's a case of messaging for every staff member off with it, rather that there are so many off, it's difficult to run the school! (Several close to me are closed for this reason.)
MaryAndHerNet · 14/03/2022 15:26

My kids school sent an email around because cases were so high they've declared it a serious outbreak.
Teachers, tas, staff and kids all absent with it

Lilaclavenders · 14/03/2022 15:48

Most primary parents aren't testing their children and most secondary school pupils aren't testing themselves regularly - so how would they even know they're positive?

Aren't tests being phased out?

Walkaround · 14/03/2022 19:58

Government guidance remains to do a PCR if symptomatic, and to isolate for 10 days if positive, or to do LFTs from day 5 onwards if you want to come out from isolation early. Lots of parents are not bothering to test when their children have symptoms unless the parents also have symptoms, but at the school I work in, around half the children off sick atm have tested and reported a positive result since last Monday, and the fact nearly 20% of the school population were off sick today (20 more than on Friday, which was also a record day) is a massive giveaway that there are a huge number of covid cases in the community atm, as that is way beyond any norm for sickness absences. And now it has started to get to the staff, with several off today (none off last week), it will be interesting to see if enough are left standing to remain open until the end of the week!
spanieleyes · 14/03/2022 21:00

We have just hit Amber, so over 30% of the school community off, pupils and staff. We are so short staffed the bursar covered a class today- there are no supply staff anywhere, teachers or TAs. We have gone back into bubbles in a vain attempt to slow the spread. Whilst SOME children have nothing more than a bad cold, we have several who are extremely ill, one hospitalised, and several staff on their second, or even third bout. All staff are triple vaccinated but it doesn't seem to make much difference! Not sure how much longer we can keep open😥

cadburyegg · 15/03/2022 15:25

At preschool not primary but my 4 year old had it last month (positive LFT) and I'm pretty sure he had it again last week despite negative LFTs as he had high temperatures every day for 7 days which is unusual for young children. Plus my mum and I both tested positive at the weekend. My poor 4 year old was quite poorly with it. SO disruptive for childcare reasons just to have it run rife amongst classes.

Yes, for most it's a cold like symptoms or no symptoms at all, especially if vaccinated and boosted!

I'm vaccinated and boosted and feel horrendous with it. Will need at least a week off work I reckon.

Neena86 · 15/03/2022 15:48

Just had a letter sent saying make sure you're prepared for online learning incase school has to shut due to a "significant" number of staff off with covid.

BeanStew22 · 15/03/2022 16:26

@cadburyegg: I’ve had 2 weeks off & WFH this week to ease in - I’m the kind of person who would normally go in unless actually already dead. This virus has floored me (3x vaccinated) - and that had been experience of friends too

Hope you feel better soon!

GreenClock · 15/03/2022 18:48

There’s a lot of it about here (not just in schools) and several people have been very unwell. Hospitalisation nice and low though.

APurpleSquirrel · 15/03/2022 18:56

DD school is fine, had a few cases in Jan but nothing recently.
At another local school it's rife, but they seemed to miss earlier waves.

TrooBloo · 15/03/2022 19:07

Absolutely rife. My son has got it again after having it in December. 6th in his class in the last week.
