Is it possible to regain taste after covid and then for it seem okay then for it to get crappy again?

Had covid in December. Lost smell and taste. Started Coming back within a week or two but for a while afterwards I had an off/smoky taste, it was awful. It did get better though. Taste came back mainly 100 percent but odd bland days.

Fast forward, I haven't lost my taste but I have the smoky sense of taste again. Food has not been enjoyable. For a week or so things have almost tasted soapy or metallic . It's very strange. Could be unrelated to covid of course.

Have you just been vaccinated?

My pal had this come back when she got her second dose of vaccine, having caught covid previously.

I'm similar and I've heard from others that it comes and goes. I can't taste anything from the onion family, but it gives me the smoky gearbox smell and taste all day afterwards.

I had first 2 prior to covid (with a 7 month gap between second dose and actually getting covid) and booster since in jan so it's been quite a while since my booster now...

Bummer.

Take it you can’t have covid again or be pregnant?

Or it could be a change in your medication?

Thanks. I must admit that some things don't taste the same here either but not too bad!

I've got that too. I have burned taste if I eat sugary things like chocolate or popcorn. Crisps too.

My taste came back and then a few weeks later went weird like this. I had an awful burning smell in my nose for weeks which was so annoying but that's almost gone now. Can't smell bad smells yet, just nice ones like perfume. So it's not all bad!

I'm the same with bad smells!! I haven't been able to smell anything after my kids or partner have used the toilet (not a bad thing 😅). I cannot smell body odour and I know Dp often comes home sweaty and sweaty from worn before he jumps in the shower and I Haven't smelt it since covid. My neighbours have some kind of wood burner and I can't smell that which is a great as when I could, it reaked. But it's still catching my throat even though I can't smell it! I could stink for all I know and I wouldn't know 😅

but things like perfume smell perfectly normal as you say! I can smell perfume a mile off!

It’s pretty common. I have quite bad parosmia & im part of a support group. The vast majority lost their smell & taste, found it either came back or came back quite weakly and then 3 months later, the altered sense of smell/taste began..

I hope yours goes back to normal quickly, today is a bad day for me. I feel physically sick at the horrible smell up my nose that I just cannot shift 😢 it’s a really awful ongoing symptom although admittedly I’m fine otherwise. I have plenty of energy etc, just mentally it’s completely miserable.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 04/03/2022 13:48

The anosmia and parosmia could be an issue for a while. It's probably one of the last symptoms to go back to normal.
