English Schools: Do you children /pupils you teach still wear masks even though it's not mandatory?

I had thought schools had done away with them for pupils - my child's has - but then I read that pupils are still choosing to wear masks in large numbers at various secondary schools in the country despite the lack of mandate.

I was interested to know if my child's high school was typical by kids not wearing masks, or an anomaly.

Not at my school. We have about 1300 kids very few wear a mask. I have a year group of 300, I would say there are 5 or 6 of them wearing a mask still.
Few more staff members but majority not.

About half and half at my DDs’ secondary school.

@VerbenaGirl

About half and half at my DDs’ secondary school.
And they wear them through the lessons?

We've just finished our worst wave passing through, so masks were strongly encouraged. I'd say about 75% of kids have been wearing them, and 90% of staff.

A few of our unvaccinated year 7s still do. Most of our international boarders were wearing masks in September (when it wasn't officially advised in the UK) but even they have mostly stopped bothering now (probably because they've all had bloody covid since being in the UK).

I think a significant minority of staff will choose to wear masks when we go back to in person assemblies after half term.

A few of our teenagers actually like the security blanket aspect of wearing a mask, and now feel quite uncomfortable without one. It makes them feel less insecure about bad skin, braces etc.

Our school insists on them at all times. The idea that anything is “done away with” forgets that business, schools etc set their own rules so what is required nationally bares little resemblance to what happens locally.

noblegiraffe · 19/02/2022 10:41

Couple of kids in each class still wearing them all the time.

Last time they did away with them in May 2021 no one continued wearing them.

Twiglets1 · 19/02/2022 17:47

Most pupils have stopped wearing them in the school I work in. With staff it’s about 50/50

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 19/02/2022 17:48

Maybe 1/50 in my school.

I wear mine all day, but still have covid for half term

DonGray · 19/02/2022 17:52

Our school still requires them in corridors

MarshaBradyo · 19/02/2022 17:54

Just asked and no there’s no one still wearing them

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 17:56

There’s a couple of students in each class I teach

user1471509171 · 19/02/2022 19:14

My children's school still ask children to wear them in communal areas. I think most do according to my kids.

GirlInACountrySong · 19/02/2022 19:16

nobody wears the things at ds school, just asked him

they are highly recommended but no

cant be enforced either

DoctorSnortles · 19/02/2022 20:05

I say roughly about 25% still wear them in class. Far more wear them in corridors etc.

I was wearing an FFP2 mask at all times. Caught Covid at home from DD, in the end!

ihearttc · 20/02/2022 07:49

DS1’s school have insisted on them the entire time since September 2020 when they went back after lockdown 1. They have to wear them the entire time apart from outside.

BitterTits · 20/02/2022 20:05

Some of mine do. I don't to teach in because it's a big strain on my voice.
