Diarrhea...is it a symptom?

Hi all, so yesterday my 3 year old started to have diarrhea. Quite badly. It has continued onto today as well, my 7 year old seems to have it also today.

My DS (3yr old) seems fine within himself, maybe a bit tired but not overly. At times he feels warm to the touch but when i take his temp its totally normal. Iv done LFT yesterday and today, both negative, same for 7 year old.

Iv heard alot that children often have diarrhea with covid so I'm just wondering if you or your child did? Also, when did they/you test positive on LFT after the diarrhea started?

You say they have tested negative?

Maybe it's just the shits? 🤷‍♀️

Yes, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting can all be symptoms. I work in this field and omicron doesnt have the typical symptoms we were told to look for last year. Generally 'cold like' but gastric symptoms arent unheard of too. It could just be a gastric bug, but I personally would get a PCR to be sure. LFT's also don't seen to show up until later in the virus now too.

I hope the kids are staying hydrated with dioralyte or very weak squash. Bananas can help replace potassium and to bind stools up.

Thank you, they are both hydrated using dioralyte.

I'm just so unsure as to when to stop the lft and decide its just a bug. It's so hard to know what to do. Lft are neg but is a pcr the right route when its only diarrhea?

Can be but it could also just be a bug

I had this as a first symptom

Yes it's always been a symptom (even before Omicron).

Also lfts have a quite high false negative rate (particularly nasal only). Some people test negative for days before testing positive, for example.

You don't need to keep testing the DC though. Just assume it's likely Covid - and even if it isn't, it's some kind of contagious bug.

I hope they feel better soon Flowers

Yes I had diarrhoea. Think I got infected on the Friday, first symptom a sore throat on the Monday. Did a LFT each day and Thursday it was positive and I got diarrhoea on the Thurs and Fri.
