Constant post nasal drip

I have been diagnosed with long covid (10 months now). It's left me with adult onset asthma when I previously had no asthma at all. This is being managed really well now with Fostair. However the whole time I've had post nasal drip. Constantly having to swallow, clear my throat and I can feel it. It's horrible! I've been prescribed steroid nasal sprays, antihistamines, I used a humidifier and I've gargled with salt water and done nasal irrigation. Nothing works. It's making my throat very sore especially at night which is horrible. I just want it gone. Can anyone think of anything I haven't tried? Thanks

It could be related to acid reflux - google LPR - in which case Gaviscon Advance may help. I’ve had same for around 18 months - I don’t think I had Covid but there’s been a huge increase in people reporting this symptom - it’s currently being linked to an increase in LPR but maybe it is a side effect of Covid.

Hi, thanks for the response. I did see this mentioned when I was googling so I have started taking over the counter esomeprazole one a day. I've been doing this for about a week but it's not helping yet. Shall I persevere a bit longer maybe?

My hip prescribed omeprazole for this, which didn’t work. I just take an antihistamine every day now and it’s stopped.

I was taking a daily antihistamine for months but it did nothing. Maybe it depends on the cause and mine isn't allergy related. I'd do anything to get rid of it especially now it's affecting my throat too

My 5 year old daughter had covid symptoms in April 2020. Since then she suffers with a postnasal drip and hoarse voice. She also says her throat feels "blocked". She is on a nose spray and gets loratadine but it doesn't seem to help much. I guess it does prevent the cough which she seemed to get as a result of the post nasal drip so that's something. This has been going on for nearly 2 years now though 🙁

I had post nasal drip for weeks which made me cough. Only thing that worked was green Sudafed

Have you tried steaming? Or the polar opposite, olbas oil, which is drying?
It could be acid reflux, but I wouldn't recommend just taking over the counter to deal with it. I started with severe acid reflux suddenly last November. I was put on two omeprazole a day, plus Peptac (none branded gaviscon). I've finally dropped down to one a day but I had Covid recently and it all flared up again. I wonder whether Covid set it off last year, but I was asymptomatic if it was. Omeprazole and similar meds should not be taken long term as they cause osteoporosis, but it can take a long time to settle acid reflux.

There are different types of anti-histamine, might be worth trying a different one? The two main ones that you can buy off the shelf are cetirizine and loratadine.

The post nasal drip is still here unless I take anti-histamines, and I had covid nearly two years ago...

Thank you for all the helpful replies, some of these things I've tried and others I will give a go. I will try anything that may help! Sorry your little dd is suffering too Elizabeth.
Which antihistamine have you used Granny?. I've been prescribed fexofenadine but it does nothing to help

I had post nasal drip for a couple of years and nothing seemed to help, it was so bad at night I would try to sleep with my nose pointing down IYSWIM.
Certirizine helped a bit. Gp said it was silent reflux and gave me omeprozole. It wasn't and that didn't help.
Bizarrely it cleared up when I had covid.

Tesco sleep aid pills. Apparently the active ingredient is a high strength antihistamine.. When I had my jabs and booster I had a tap - like nose!! Worked well and def helped sleep also!

@Firstshoes I use cetirizine but that's the one I'm on anyway for other allergies.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. There are definitely a couple of things I can try. I suppose it's just finding the one that works for me. I desperately want to get rid of it now!

I will try some of these remedies too. I've had a cough since February 2020 and have to constantly clear my throat.

I'm tempted to make another appointment at the doctor's (if I can get seen). My daughter's hoarse throat just isn't shifting and I'm sure it's caused by the post nasal drip. The avamys and loratadine help but it's not solving the problem. I'll let you know if I can get an appointment and what they say....

The GP gave me a steroid nasal spray a few months ago, similar to what you can get for hay fever. It didn't seem to make any difference so I stopped using it. I've tried steaming and I also have a mini nebuliser, which I use with saline solution. Both of them help to some extent.

The severe cough and fever that I had in 2020 could have been covid I suppose, although it wasn't known to be spreading in the community at that time (first week of February).

Not everything is due to covid, or long covid

See your gp. This may need further investigation. Some ENT cancers can present with intractable post nasal drip.

On googling I've come across something called Sinupret which has pretty good reviews. I have bought the tablets from Amazon and they are arriving today. Will report back if they work

@Firstshoes How are you getting on with the Sinupret? My throat clearing is still a problem but I do seem to get some relief if I hit it with alkaline water, ginger and fresh turmeric tea with Manuka honey plus ton of Gaviscon Advance.

I have had nasal and sinus issues since having covid in December. I often feel phlegm and need to clear my throat. It's pretty mild for me, mainly in the mornings. I've been using Neilmed sinus rinses 😊

Hi LadyDancealot . The Sinupret really does seem to have worked. My symptoms have really improved. I've stopped taking them and so far I am still okay.

Similar to Kage I do still feel a bit phlegmy in the mornings but nowhere near as bad. My breathing has improved massively too so I do wonder if the long covid is just passing now. I really hope so as it's been a year !

Interesting. I've had ongoing nasal drip issues that began in March 2020. I didn't think I had covid as I hardly had any symptoms, just a bit of a sore throat for a couple of days, but my throat has never been clear since.

I've had all the available treatments from the doctor including steroid sprays/drops, antihistamines for weeks on end, and have been referred to an ENT (but no doubt that will take ages). I'll give those tablets a go.
