Lateral flow for conjunctivitis?

DS is 2yrs 7 months. Friday evening he developed red eyes, Saturday he woke up and they were glued together. They are much better today, no gunk but still very red. MIL says she has read conjunctivitis in children is a symptom of Omicron and I should lateral flow test DS. He has no fever and isnt in any way unwell. WWYD? I lateral flow daily for work, and have been negative every day so far.

Sore eyes seems to be a symptom, so I’d do it to be sure.

Personally I’d bath his eyes with cooled boiled water and speak to gp if there are further issues. DS had gunky eyes when he was a baby and that was a long time ago. Not everything is covid.

Day 1 of Covid here for my 3 year old. Her eyes are bloodshot and red in colour. They look watery and a little sore.

A couple of the babies and toddlers I know who've had it have had conjunctivitis with covid so I would test. My kids are ok with it though.

balls im going to have to test him arent i. my gut was saying its a normal childhood thing, apparantly i suffered with it a lot as a toddler, but seems the consensus is to test to be safe. DS isnt the most compliant so wish me luck.

Would you wait and try in his sleep if it's going to be a battle? I've managed that a few times on a baby.

I realise there's a world of difference in age, but my 9yo had sore, red eyes on day 1 and day 2 of Covid. It's awful, though, wondering if every wee thing is Covid. I have been told by test and trace that the pressure in my head and eyes from Thursday onwards counts as a symptom, even though I only tested positive yesterday. There are so many symptoms now.

I wouldn’t unless he has any other symptoms. This is madness, we are testing young children for everything little thing. Children get conjunctivitis, children get norovirus, children get colds, children get chicken pox, children get other things.

ColettesEarrings · 30/01/2022 10:24

If it's clearly conjunctivitis with gunk then no, I wouldn't test. It's caused by a separate bacteria or virus. I mean there's no reason why you couldn't get it Ion top of a weakened immune system from covid, but in the absence of other covid symptoms I wouldn't test.

My 20 mo got gunky eyes with Covid. Had cold symptoms for a few days first though.
