Has anyone caught (or think you caught) covid in a cinema/theatre or happily escaped it when visiting the cinema?

I am just trying to weigh up the risks. My DD has been invited to go to a popular children’s movie (just launched) at the cinema by her Godmother. My instinct is to say no because the cinema will be full of unvaccinated, non mask-wearing kids. However, I wondered if it is actually not that risky because people are not talking face to face but sitting quietly all facing in one direction? I know there’s been some research published suggesting this is the case but I believe it was done in relation to pre-Delta covid so less transmissible back then! I wondered what people’s recent experiences were with cinema/theatre trips, especially with unvaccinated DCs who havent recently had covid before going to the cinema/theatre?

A lot of the big multiplexes have excellent air con which filters and replaces air constantly. DH and our young adult kids have been to the cinema lots and been fine, but they're all vaccinated, so probably not a good comparison. She's more likely to catch it at school/nursery TBH.

I went to see Spider-Man the weekend it opened before Christmas, it was packed and I did think to myself that it must be high risk, but no one in our group caught it or anything else.

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/01/2022 18:04

I sat next to someone in the cinema who tested positive 2 days later, and didn’t catch it. We were wearing masks.

PotteringAlong · 29/01/2022 18:06

We went to the panto at Christmas in what could only be described as a Covid cess pit and none of us caught it.

Let her go and see sing 2. She’s around unvaccinated kids without masks on every day at school : why is the cinema any worse?

DelurkingAJ · 29/01/2022 18:06

We went to see Mary Poppins in London, crowded theatre. No issues at all. Delighted to see things back to normal. DSs much more likely to catch it at school (both in primary).

BuffaloHigh · 29/01/2022 18:06

Surely your child is at far more risk by going to school? And I’ve been to the cinema 3 times in the last month and not caught it. But then I didn’t catch it when when my DS had it (twice, both from school) or my DH.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 29/01/2022 18:07

I would have thought it would less risky than attending school. I’ve been every week and haven’t caught it there.

NoSquirrels · 29/01/2022 18:08

In the run-up to Christmas my unvaccinated primary age child went to the panto with school, cinema with Brownies, and cinema with us. No adverse effects!

Sturmundcalm · 29/01/2022 18:08

we've been to the cinema a lot more than the average family because we love it and want to support it. none of us have caught covid from cinema trips (OH got it from school but none of the rest of us have had it).

we do try to do quieter showings (regularly just us and 1 or 2 other groups in the cinema), but for Spiderman we did go see it within ten days of opening so it was still pretty busy and James Bond was similar. the air conditioning was broken in the James Bond hall as well and still no transmission...

ElectraBlue · 29/01/2022 18:09

I have been to the cinema several times, I can't wear a mask and I have never had Covid.

camperqueen54 · 29/01/2022 18:09

Been to the cinema about 5 times. Never caught it!

SummerHouse · 29/01/2022 18:11

Been a few times including to Pantovid. All fine, no contraction of covid. I really think we need to retrain our thought processes on this. When anyone coughs, I think covid and hold my breath. What have I become!!

broccolibush · 29/01/2022 18:11

I went to supper and the theatre with friends one Friday, the following day I started symptoms and I tested positive on the Sunday. Neither of them caught it from me. And we were in closer proximity for longer than people in the theatre generally were.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2022 18:13

DS has been to the cinema about four times since the pandemic. No problems at all.

He caught it at home from his brother.

ElizabethG81 · 29/01/2022 18:14

I've been with the kids several times since the pandemic started, none of us have caught covid there or anywhere else.

Wakemeuuuup · 29/01/2022 18:24

Kids go to cinema regularly and haven't had covid (yet). Min you, they also go to schand haven't caught it there yet either

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/01/2022 18:28

Been to see Bond (in the unmasked time) and Panto (masked).

No Covid.

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/01/2022 18:28

I've been to the cinema loads and never caught Covid yet.

OneMoreTimeThen · 29/01/2022 18:29

We've been to the cinema a few times and the theatre and not caught it

Pootle40 · 29/01/2022 18:32

I've been multiple times to the cinema and theatre. Never had Covid but don't care either way.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 29/01/2022 18:33

If your Dd is at nursery or school they are spending all week with unvaccinated non-masked kids. Probably slobbering all over each other, and in a less ventilated space than any public venue with a licence.

DynamiteFilledRadish · 29/01/2022 18:36

You'd be very unreasonable to say no. Are you going to prevent the poor child from ever doing anything fun because of the risk of catching a virus?

jazzandh · 29/01/2022 18:36

fairly sure Ds2 caught covid from the pantomime before Christmas.

He hadn't been anywhere else in the few days before and tested before he went.

Hoppinggreen · 29/01/2022 18:39

We went to the cinema at Christmas with someone who tested positive next day. None of us caught it
We have also been to the cinema twice in November and didn’t catch it

imnottoofussed · 29/01/2022 18:39

I've been to the cinema approx twice a month since they opened and not caught covid yet
