Has anyone caught (or think you caught) covid in a cinema/theatre or happily escaped it when visiting the cinema?

I am just trying to weigh up the risks. My DD has been invited to go to a popular children’s movie (just launched) at the cinema by her Godmother. My instinct is to say no because the cinema will be full of unvaccinated, non mask-wearing kids. However, I wondered if it is actually not that risky because people are not talking face to face but sitting quietly all facing in one direction? I know there’s been some research published suggesting this is the case but I believe it was done in relation to pre-Delta covid so less transmissible back then! I wondered what people’s recent experiences were with cinema/theatre trips, especially with unvaccinated DCs who havent recently had covid before going to the cinema/theatre?

I go to the cinema about twice a week and always have apart from lockdown. I've not caught covid.

I'm also going to see the film you're talking about this afternoon and it didn't cross my mind about unvaccinated children - I'm going anyway!

@Cratos
This pious "I am willing to never do anything remotely enjoyable for the rest of my life because I CARE" rhetoric is wearing thin.

It’s also a bit harsh if you have dc and stop them doing everyday stuff

Also people will expect these pubs and restaurants, and entertainment venues still to be there. Even though they haven't supported them.

treeflowercat · 30/01/2022 11:19

@Cratos

But if we stop being cautious now those venues will suffer more again in the near future.

If we continue to be cautious in the way you suggest then these venues will suffer right now, not at some undefined future date.

If I thought your strategy would work, I might have more time for it, but if we did what you suggest, cases probably would likely fall more quickly, but then they'd rise again once we did open us, which would presumably lead to you calling for caution again very quickly, and we're stuck in a never ending loop where venues only open under restrictions for short periods before you slam them back into lockdown again as you get freaked out again.

underneaththeash · 30/01/2022 11:21

My kids have caught it twice from either a London theatre or a train journey there!

Pootle40 · 30/01/2022 11:27

@Cratos

Priority has to be to protect NHS and its staff, our teaching staff and our vulnerable people. Kids have to go to school of course but trying to keep the school safe by not bringing unnecessary risk by being cautious is our responsibility. Infection and death rates are still high. If you feel comfortable with what you do that is up to you. I am choosing to care about others and I am choosing not be selfish. That is why I will continue to wear my mask even if I go to an indoor venue. I also missed going to cinemas, clubs and restaurants. But if we stop being cautious now those venues will suffer more again in the near future.
That's deluded thinking I'm afraid
Im2022 · 30/01/2022 11:36

I don't like the whole "Covid safe" mentality. It implies there's no risk.

Okay 🙄

MissMaple82 · 30/01/2022 11:44

Oh my word.. 🤦‍♀️

Summersdreaming · 30/01/2022 11:46

Of course you should let her go!

treeflowercat · 30/01/2022 11:48

I think many of these people would be ok to see them close forever, as they didn't go to them anyway. They're the same people who criticised "eat out to help out" when cases were running at only about 1,000 per day in the U.K., so it's difficult to see whatever will ever satisfy them.

LemonDrizzles · 30/01/2022 12:02

Been to theatre recently. Did not catch it. Perhaps lucky...

OberthursGrizzledSkipper · 30/01/2022 12:04

Last went to the cinema in August. All 4 of us caught Covid from that visit despite being in a large screen with very few other patrons.

Wizzbangfizz · 30/01/2022 12:06

Jesus Christ your poor DD.

MrsEricBana · 30/01/2022 12:57

Nice

Thanks everyone. I am feeling more reassured now.

Can someone get @Cratos a “bestest covid avoider gold star tiara please” Wink

Op far more chance of getting it from school, let her go, it’s time we returned to normal life (and supported local businesses)

marqueses · 30/01/2022 13:56

@MGMidget

Thanks everyone. I am feeling more reassured now.
Why?

The risk of your child catching covid at the cinema is dictated only by the circumstances at the cinema whist he is there

It's totally illogical to think he won't catch it because other people at other cinemas at other times didnt

I genuinely don't understand your reasoning.

SummerBluez · 30/01/2022 14:03

@MGMidget
Even if your child does catch it it really isn't the end of the world.
Assuming no underlying conditions they'll likely feel a bit rubbish for a few days and that will be it.

Wow! I thought catching covid had stopped being an issue of morality! Well done though.
hamsterchump · 30/01/2022 16:39

We've been to the cinema as often as we can since they reopened as well as the pub and anywhere else we fancied, pantomime, restaurants, people's houses etc, still never caught Covid once in all this time. The cinema still isn't as busy as normal in my experience so some people must still be avoiding it.

I am double jabbed, beginning to wonder if I'll ever get it or if I could have had it completely without knowing. I only know a couple of people who have had it and none where I am, it's weird.

Buzzinwithbez · 30/01/2022 16:41

Okay 🙄

I agree there's no such thing. It's just pointless theatre. Go or don't go.

In a survey from a hotel I stayed it there was a question about whether there was enough safety in place. There was nowhere to write why not drop what you've got, it's pointless.
The no proper paper menus was the worst one. You could only order food if you had a device that could do QR codes. Happily we went to the Toby carvery instead and joined the scrum at the buffet and chose drinks and dessert from proper menus, served by a proper human.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 30/01/2022 17:16

Christ are people still going on about all this. Life is back to normal here 🤷🏼‍♀️

5128gap · 30/01/2022 17:32

OP, unless there's a particular reason why it would be inconvenient for her to catch covid at the moment, don't restrict her activities to only those things you are reassured about. I've been to packed nightclubs and concerts and not caught covid, then suddenly did get it and had been nowhere but work and shopping, so really it's anyone's guess. It would be such a shame to restrict her experiences when it's pretty near impossible to avoid altogether so probably rather pointless.

liveforsummer · 30/01/2022 17:37

Surely she's way way more at risk at school or nursery?! Fwiw I didn't catch covid when dc had it and dd2 was sleeping in my bed snoring in to my face and sneaking drinks from my glass. I did catch it when I did little else except sit at home over Xmas. There's no way to assess probabilities. It's not something I even consider anymore though tbh
