How do you know which variant?

If you get a positive on a lateral flow test, you now don't need to take a PCR test, so how do you find out which variant you have? Is that only confirmed if you have the PCR?

They only sequence a % of PCRs so most people don't know the variant they have

In March people wont have to test or isolate so i guess it doesnt matter that much

I’ve got Covid at the moment,no PCR. I’ve just assumed it’s Omicron but not sure which subvariant. Delta is still knocking about though isn’t it?

I’m triple vaxxed…. But definitely more than ‘just a cold’ for me!

Most people who have a pcr will never know what variant they have.....I am guessing I had omicron but I will never know

Cookerhood · 29/01/2022 08:57

Early on with omicron they used to tell you but not now. The vast majority of infections in the UK are omicron so you can assume it is.

ColettesEarrings · 29/01/2022 09:08

Sanger institute testing shows that 99.6% of samples are omicron at present.

Thanks very much for this.

I was just curious really as I'd seen people online saying they had Omicron but I wasn't sure how they knew.

In March - if you're one of the teeny tiny population that live in England - you might not have to test or isolate. Until then, you do.
