Why are Sainsbury's (and others) asking for continued mask wearing?

To keep their staff well? ( many don't wear one even now)

To give customers a sense of security?

I'm very willing to wear one if there's a reasonable reason to.. and I get all the theories why we may be wise to. But why are supermarkets going for this request? Why is it in their interest?

Am I missing the obvious?

i hear from colleagues about security guards refusing entry to a certain Tesco to those without masks

GirlInACountrySong · 27/01/2022 08:03

It's just lip service

Nobody will be checking on it, nobody will be bothered in store

Tilltheend99 · 27/01/2022 08:03

There was recently a study that showed the supermarket to be the most likely place where people will be exposed to catching Covid.

I think it’s good they will be keeping staff and customers safe.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/01/2022 08:03

and in a charity shop also refusing entry

saleorbouy · 27/01/2022 08:03

Because there are still a high amount of staff in many businesses off work due to +ve test results. This has lead to staffing shortages.and difficulties running many companies. By continuing to wear a mask it will help to reduce staff absence and allow them to maintain a good level of customer service.

Againstmachine · 27/01/2022 08:04

Because they have decided that on balance they will get more customers and profits if they mandate mask wearing than if not.

Sainsbury's aren't mandating it in any way at all it's hilarious that you think they are.

As a retail manager I find that interesting

All anyone has to say is they are exempt.... nobody should be questioned about that

allbartwo · 27/01/2022 08:04

It makes them look like they care. So people that are worried are more likely to shop there. But they don't want to alienate people either.

Hence the wording "wear a mask if you can". How do you define "if you can?".

  1. I can because I've always worn one when required, and I'm not exempt.
  1. I can't because I binned them all.
Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2022 08:05

@Againstmachine

Its just to say we are doing something, without actually doing something, it's pure PR and has no meaning.
That's what I think. But it's working because people are believing it's to protect staff and customers and nothing to do with profit.
butterpuffed · 27/01/2022 08:07

It isn't just shops, I had an email from Stagecoach asking passengers to carry on wearing masks.

It's not a huge inconvenience, I can't see the problem.

User764832 · 27/01/2022 08:09

I'm surprised Tesco hasn't sent out a 'still keeping you safe' email, maybe I missed it.

I had that email as well. I'm on a Stagecoach bus twice a day, every day. Half of the passengers don't wear masks and the drivers never say anything to them and myself.

you should continue to wear one in the supermarket,
why is this thread going on?

SarahBellam · 27/01/2022 08:13

To keep people stay a bit safer? Protect their staff? I dunno. I’ll keep wearing mine. It’s no big deal.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 27/01/2022 08:14

Because it’s an easy way to help prevent transmission.

This. It’s pretty obvious. They don’t want their staff or customers sick or dying unnecessarily. And they don’t want another lockdown, which becomes more likely when the infection rate rises.

Chuechebache · 27/01/2022 08:14

Because they have a mature attitude, like many many countries in the far east.people in the west have a very neurotic attitude towards mask wearing.they think, their freedom is curtailed. If our feeling of freedom depends on wearing a mask or not,we really are a lost cause.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/01/2022 08:16

oh having read the guidance, it appears to still need updating!

southeastdweller · 27/01/2022 08:16

@MrsLargeEmbodied

That info's not been updated yet.
Rooroobear · 27/01/2022 08:17

I think place ms should have the option to ask people to wear masks but it should be personal choice. I work in a shop and all of you saying the supermarkets should be telling people we are not allowed to enforce it. We can ask people if they have one however we cannot ask them to put one on or why they haven’t got one on. Enough is enough now. It’s practically 2 years on how long should we do this for? I understand there are vulnerable people and we are still in a pandemic but we need to get on with it.

Recycledblonde · 27/01/2022 08:19

I've been to Sainsburys this morning, the vast majority of staff, including the older ones, are not wearing masks and virtually all the customers were mask free too.
Sainsburys really don't care about staff or customers health but it makes them look as of they do.

cookiemonster2468 · 27/01/2022 08:20

@MrsSkylerWhite

This. Simple.

Big supermarkets do have some influence and it's great that they are taking a stand on it to protect their customers.

Doris86 · 27/01/2022 08:20

I remember going to Sainsburys the last time mask rules ended. They had signs at the door saying ‘please still wear a mask.’ Fair enough I thought, so I did.

Then I got in the shop and absolutely none of the staff had a mask on. So I took mine off.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 27/01/2022 08:22

If it's anything like my local Sainsburys in July, absolutely no one will be wearing masks anyway so it makes zero difference.

I'm not a particular fan of masks, but wore mine on my first visit to Sainsburys after the last mask removal mandate. That is what they wanted and asked for. I didn't need to be in Sainsburys particularly. Not a single staff member was wearing a mask. I didn't bother after that. You can't say wear a mask to protect our staff when the staff won't equally protect the customers.

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2022 08:22

I think it's a bigger ask for staff to wear a mask their whole 8 hour plus shift, than for customers to wear one for twenty minutes in the shop. So I wouldn't really compare that.

Stuffin · 27/01/2022 08:25

It's what happened last time and personally I think they are trying to win over everyone.

Those that want the security of a mask think they will enforce it and go but those that don't will find that no one will say anything. It's a win win for them irrespective of how the individual feels masked or not.
