Why are Sainsbury's (and others) asking for continued mask wearing?

jowly · 26/01/2022 23:22

To keep their staff well? ( many don't wear one even now)

To give customers a sense of security?

I'm very willing to wear one if there's a reasonable reason to.. and I get all the theories why we may be wise to. But why are supermarkets going for this request? Why is it in their interest?

Am I missing the obvious?

Delivery drivers need to wear masks???

Er, no! Nobody outdoors has ever needed to wear a mask! Ridiculous and over the top!

Those bothering with wearing masks today have let them migrate under chins and noses here.... I'm observing customers in/out our store with interest!

Mask wearing has dramatically dropped

Er…. Actually up until a few weeks ago all the supermarket delivery drivers I dealt with were wearing masks. The few that turned up at the door without them put them on to bring in the shopping.
Againstmachine · 29/01/2022 19:21

*Delivery drivers aren't always outside.

Not everybody lives in houses.

Our front door is in very much indoors and the space outside is quite confined. As an extremely vulnerable immunocompromised person I am very grateful for delivery drivers wearing masks.*

But delivery drivers haven't had to wear masks indoors or outdoors. If you are having something delivered that's upto you to protect yourself.

@Remmy123

Large Sainsbury and hardly any staff or customers in a mask - nice to see people's faces!!!
That’s what I thought @Remmy123. The security guard in Waitrose gave me a really big smile when I went yesterday and it was so nice.
MrsSkylerWhite · 29/01/2022 23:25

Aldi this evening, at least 4 in 5 wearing masks ( as well as staff, 100 %)

TheChip · 30/01/2022 00:07

Mask mandates end and I see a woman driving her car alone in a mask for the first time. I've heard stories of this happening, but I've never seen it myself until yesterday.
Hopefully she just forgot it was on.

If you're driving from one set of shops to another, it can be easier and less faff and also more hygienic I suppose to just leave it on.
milkyaqua · 30/01/2022 03:34

I think mask wearing is sensible, whether it is a mandate or not, as this is an airborne virus that kills people, somewhat randomly.

GirlInACountrySong · 30/01/2022 06:30

@Rosscameasdoody

It's not required of delivery drivers, at all

We certainly don't expect ours to. When I've seen delivery drop offs I don't see the householder wearing one! I certainly dont!

Totally ott but then this is mumsnet I suppose

Sorry, should have clarified, I’m CEV and still at risk because of immunosuppressant drugs. I usually have Sainsburys deliveries and until recently they’ve all had masks at the ready if requested to wear one. I wear a mask and socially distance when receiving food deliveries and the drivers usually don’t object if I ask them to wear one if they have to bring items of shopping inside. Not OTT and not really to do with MN - just common sense if you’re vulnerable.

Yeah. I wear a mask all day at work, so it feels odd to be constantly whipping it in and off again between shops, and I don't always take it off when I leave the building. I tend to take it off at around the same time I take off my lanyard, which might be as soon as I close the door behind me, or might be when I take off my coat when I get home, but is usually at some point in between.

Why hopefully? Shouldn’t bother you in the least.

If she was visiting multiple shops or people as a nurse/care worker etc. she was doing exactly what she was supposed to. Masks aren’t supposed to be taken on and off multiple times, Increases risk infection.

TheChip · 30/01/2022 13:18

It doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's just strange. As others have mentioned the flitting between shops, and it being healthier to keep on, it easily could have been that.
With it being one of the disposable ones though, I'd of thought it going in the bin before the next shop would have been the healthier option. In her case especially since driving away from the shops.

GirlInACountrySong · 30/01/2022 15:40

Was she wearing glasses? That may be why

I did this yesterday. Went to Asda, they didn't have what I needed and it's only a 5 minute drive to sainsburys so just kept my mask on for the drive.
HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 30/01/2022 16:49

It isn't legally mandated to brush your teeth twice a day or put a coat on if it's cold outside.

It's sensible to do those things for your health.

There is a highly contagious virus circulating readily amongst the population and a decreasing willingness amongst that population to be careful about it.

So I wear a mask, I use the 4 ply surgical disposable ones as they work with my glasses.I make sure they are well fitted and I keep my distance from people.

So far I haven't caught it, no one in my household has. All who can be vaccinated are and will continue to be so according to whatever schedule is allowed.

I wouldn't voluntarily catch or spread Norovirus, the flu or a cold either and would take steps to stay away from people who have those illnesses and to do sensible things like practice hand hygiene, use a tissue to cough or sneeze into.

I don't wear a mask unless mandated catch public transport, work at a hospital (which is now only place I do wear one)I've supported my pubs and eateries all way through.

And I have had it either, so you post about masks working is as pointless as mine.

It's a tiny little inconvenience to you to make vulnerable people feel more comfortable. Surely you don't really need to ask this question? Show a bit of empathy and stop dick waving. Just put the fucking mask on. Not much to ask.

jowly · 30/01/2022 22:11

I went to Sainsbury's today. Just as many masks as last week, including my own.

It was busy though and I'd only nipped in for something I needed. Will do a big shop tomorrow and it will be much quieter, so maybe will ditch the mask for that one

Covid is still very much here and I haven't caught it yet and don't want to
