Cases on the rise again?

Garysmum · 24/01/2022 16:33

Don't know if it's just me but looking at stats and clicky map - many local areas are on the rise again - some quite significantly so in the 50-100% rise in a week bracket.

I'm SE where there was a huge rise around Christmas which had started to fall but now it's climbing again.

Hospital numbers are rising too, which you would expect.

As I am CV, this is concerning with all the things giving a slither of protection gone.

I wonder what could happen if numbers get completely out of control - if people continually reinfect each other or we get a new variant. I assume most people don't care - they just want to get on with life and won't worry too much unless they are personally badly affected - for example if an elderly relative ends up in hospital or their kid gets long covid and can't sit exams.

If I didn't see 'numbers' in the press I would genuinely be none the wiser

NightmareSlashDelightful · 24/01/2022 17:45

Still falling here, although slowly.

Hospital numbers and people on ventilation way, way down though. Which is good.

EcoCustard · 24/01/2022 17:52

All 3 classes in DC’s primary school are nearing half the class with Covid since last Wednesday/Thursday. A few kids including mine had it over Christmas & New year. Parents also getting it and whole families. Only one teacher so far but I expect that to change. It seems like Covid is nearing an end, except it’s not. I was a bit Hmm at a parent gleefully saying there kids have not had it, not testing despite headteacher urging all too in the last fortnight and it transpires both parents have had it but not adhered to any isolation.

GirlInACountrySong · 24/01/2022 18:04

i agree we should stop testing and just get on with it now

too any people off work leaving the strain for everyone else to pick up....when they return they say they've been fine but stuck at home bored! if you feel ill then it should be treated like any other illness

OliveTree75 · 24/01/2022 18:06

@Remmy123

Yes they will be on the rise as schools are back
Yep. 4 in my class have tested positive today. I can't get worked up about it
Crunchymum · 24/01/2022 18:32

My area has dropped massively. Of course no longer needing a PCR to confirm a positive case is skewing to figures.

Crunchymum · 24/01/2022 18:32

the* figures

Get on with what?

We don’t have a robust vaccine yet as efficiency is reliant on boosters.

Variants haven’t stopped.

It’s not the flu.

HipHopBanzai · 24/01/2022 18:37

Cases are falling in my area according to the government dashboard. Rates have been consistently high here throughout the pandemic but were crazy over Christmas. We seemed to have a real lull for a couple of weeks post Christmas but there are now apparently lots of lots of children off in the DC's school and other schools in the area.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 24/01/2022 18:37

Well, they said all along it could be bumpy this spring.

So I expect there will be fair few ups and downs.

I notice they no longer say that easings of restrictions are permanent/irrevocable. The key indicator now is pressure on hospitals. Right now admissions seem to have plateau'ed. Thats good

Iggly · 24/01/2022 18:38

I wish people would stop bleating the political narrative and actually engage in the science.

It’s like Brexit “fed up of experts” all over again, and look where we’ve ended up as a result.

There’s a reason that politicians are politician and not scientists. They’re there to make things sound and look good.

Sadly this attitude will come back to bite them (and us) on the arse.

Happypootler · 24/01/2022 18:42

@itsasecret kids being reinfected over and over sounds implausible....that's at least 4 separate infections right?

grossnessewwww · 24/01/2022 18:42

@Waxonwaxoff0

Well, we can't live in a continuous cycle of lockdowns.
No one suggested lockdowns. Just masks and testing to reduce the risk of CEV catching it.

But most people on here give no shits about CEV as long as they can take their "face nappy off."

Iggly · 24/01/2022 18:45

A series of lower level public health measures over a longer time period would have been much better than the current nonsense we have now.

Where are the ventilators for schools? Which have been proven to work? Mask-haters (or those who are scared of masks) cannot argue with having a air filter in a class. Or can they. 😂

WonderfulYou · 24/01/2022 18:48

Yes I’m my school.
We had 8/40 go home today. We already have quite a few out anyway.
We are waiting to hear whether we can open tomorrow.

We have lots of staff off some with covid or some who aren’t fully vaccinated so everytime they come into contact with a positive case they have 10 days off. Two came back today and now won’t be in again for another 10 days.

It’s getting on my nerves now as the kids are not getting an education - the classes are collapsed and are being taught by cover staff who are great but don’t know the subject area at all so can’t help them.

Fortunately most are vaccinated so no one is seriously ill.

But they need to either scrap the isolation period for close contacts or have a break from formal education and pick it back up when everyone’s back.

Masks ultimately won't be enough to stop Covid, especially with Omicron. All they'll do is slow down the spread at best... And that's all isolation will do too. It doesn't reduce the risk to the CEV in schools, it just extends that risk over a longer period of time.

As such, it's pointless and counterproductive... A whole load of disruption for the sake of feeling like we're trying to control Covid, when in reality it's futile.

It would be far better now to scrap isolation and treat Covid like we do any other illness in schools, in that you stay off only when too unwell to attend. Those that are CEV then stay away from school whilst the outbreak goes through, which it will do pretty quickly - 2-3 weeks - without isolation to prolong the process.

Less disruption overall, and better protection for those that are CEV than the shitshow we currently have... A win-win.

Garysmum · 24/01/2022 19:17

Maybe it would spread faster but what about those of us who are CV with kids at school or CV/CEV kids. Just can't win.

Are a lot of these outbreaks at primary schools? I don't have any idea how many teens have actually been vaccinated in any case - I expect could be 30-50% in average school but I am making that up

Yes, that's precisely the aim - flattening and spreading peaks is the best way to ease pressure in NHS and that's the single most important factor.

Lower levels in general circulation are also good for the CEV - they may still be facing a life with limits, but at least it is a life, not indefinitate isolation

O well that would mean half of my dds A Level teachers teaching online than and tough shit I suppose if it happens during exams.

The trouble is there’s not much flattening with omicron, especially if you look at France, Netherlands etc and near vertical lines.

It only decreases after a peak

@Iggly O yes they can. Seen plenty on another thread. Cost mainly.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 24/01/2022 19:23

We had 36% attendance today, the remaining 64% have Covid. 10 days’ isolation is mostly a waste of valuable time for these children.

GirlInACountrySong · 24/01/2022 19:31

@Iggly

get on with educating our kids thats what!!

masks are gone from thursday so looks like restrictions are going

just on mumsnet theres such a fuss...

Those who are CEV or have CEV people at home would have home learning whilst the outbreak swept through, and they'd return once it had died down. At which point, the school would be "safe" from outbreak until another evading variant like Omicron came along, or the next autumn term once the immunity from the outbreak had waned sufficiently for another one.
Ginandcrispsarebliss · 24/01/2022 19:51

I live in the SE, 20 children in my Son's class out of 30 have been tested for Covid and are home. My son has been having daily tests and he has had a negitive plus the pcr test was negitive. Teachers are of sick with covid so I think by the end of the week the school will be on-line learning from home.
