Negative LFT after positive

Aurorie11 · 19/01/2022 09:11

DD (age 11) tested positive on Monday, she's just been feeling a bit tired.
Out of interest got her to do another LFT about an hour ago, which is negative after 2 days.
Looking for similar experiences, is she likely to go positive again?
Not looking to break rules, will test on days 5 and 6, but curious

Could be a false negative as they don't pick up a positive all of the time

My 11 year old dd was exactly the same. Tested negative 24 hours after testing positive and never tested positive again on daily tests. I can only conclude that she had had it a few days before she had the positive test, that she had just had it really mildly or that it was a false positive result. I was told you couldn't have a false positive but a colleague tested positive on LFT but then negative on a PCR so who knows. She did have a sore throat for a day so I do believe that she was positive at the time of testing.

@Theresomethingaboutdairy thanks, we had been daily testing in the lead up to Monday's positive due to be alerted to close contact. She said she's just been feeling tired so I think she's had it but just mildly.
Did the rest of your family catch it?

I tested positive on Monday (had a headache) but have tested negative since then. Am isolating but also wondering whether it was a false positive or just had it very mildly?

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 19/01/2022 12:20

@Aurorie11 she is the third of 4dc, so six of us in total in the household and, no, nobody else caught it. Fingers crossed for you.

I tested positive on a lft yesterday then confirmed with pcr. I did another lft today (my daughter is autistic so I did one alongside her to help) and it's completely negative.

Im still going to follow the guidance and assume the pcr is correct but its very odd

LFT miss a lot of positive cases so it’s not a surprise.

Aurorie11 · 19/01/2022 17:45

I get that there are false positives, but rules now negative on day 5 and 6 and can end isolation early. Has any one had a positive then negative 2days late and subsequent positive?

It would be possible - just because one LFT picked up your infection, it doesn’t mean that another LFT would. That’s how inaccurate they can be.
Iggly · 19/01/2022 17:51

Eg someone I know tested negative on one LFT then positive on another, from the same packet, on the same day!

dementedpixie · 19/01/2022 17:52

We are saying its more likely to be a false negative result than a false positive result and thats why you're asked for 2 consecutive negative results to come out of isolation rather than just 1.

Iggly · 19/01/2022 17:52

So false negatives are the issue, not false positives.

The new rule is silly because the tests aren’t accurate enough. It’s a sly way of getting people to continue to isolate for the original 10 days and giving the illusion of freedom.

Aurorie11 · 20/01/2022 11:28

Day 2 and now day 3 negative, keeping fingers crossed for 5 and 6

@Iggly I took 3 all within 10 mins one time before doing a fit2fly one, the first was a very quick positive, I was in such disbelief, so I took another, which was negative, then my fit2fly which was a quick negative.

I think when you get those super quick positives but have zero symptoms, it is best to take another right away.

PlantWitch · 20/01/2022 12:44

Do you think it's connected to viral load then? I have been confirmed by pcr so will be isolating regardless but have been testing regularly alongside autistic DD (as its the only way I can get her to test) and my lft tests have been negative since the day after my pcr!

PlantWitch · 20/01/2022 12:45

I don't have many symptoms so far only a sore throat on the first day and thats the only day i've had a positive on a lft

FajitaBonita · 20/01/2022 12:47

Why are people testing themselves so much? Positive, just isolate and test on day 5 and 6 and hope for negatives then. 🙄

lexi873 · 20/01/2022 13:20

@FajitaBonita
I agree, my son got a positive Monday evening and people are texting me asking how he is and if he’s still getting positives? He’s only on day 3 so why would I have tested again, wasnt going to until the weekend days 5 and 6 to check if he’s good to go back to school Monday.

Aurorie11 · 23/01/2022 20:21

My DD was negative from day 2 and still negative day 6, so back to school
I've now got it
