When could self isolation potentially end under todays new rules

My daughter first showed covid symptoms and tested positive this morning.

I phoned test and trace who said today is day zero. Providing she tests negative on days 4 and 5 which would be this coming Friday and Saturday she can stop isolating on day 5 (Saturday).

This seems at complete odds with everything else I've read but is it because test and trace are treating today as day zero rather than day 1?

Thanks : )

Yep - it has to be 5 full days. So the day you test or start symptoms is day zero.

As far as I'm aware, day zero is the day she took the test. She can come out of isolation on day 6 if she tests negative on days 5 and 6.

It’s rather confusing because it is actually day 6, not 5, where you can come out of isolation

oohmamama · 17/01/2022 18:48

@AnyFucker

Agreed - very confusing.

DeathMetalMum · 17/01/2022 18:57

The first day (either of symptoms or positive test) has always been classed as 'day zero'.

dementedpixie · 17/01/2022 19:47

It's day 5 and 6 for testing not 4 and 5

kitz90 · 17/01/2022 20:49

Thanks everyone I feel so stupid but I've been mightily confused over it.... And when the lady mentioned days 4 and 5 I thought the day 4 bit sounded really wrong.

If today is day zero she won't be able to leave isolation till Sunday at the earliest/ day 6. That is assuming two negative lateral flows, I didn't get a negative lateral flow till day ten so don't count on it being only five days isolating
