So that’s it then, the pandemic really is going to end in the UK in a couple of months time. I’ve never been so happy to read a news article!

OP posts:
Whelmed · 17/01/2022 10:07

I think it's the right time for it.

Sort0f · 17/01/2022 10:09

@Chessie678

What of the multiple studies of long covid patients which find organ damage and the presence of the virus in the organ?

ClaudineClare · 17/01/2022 10:10
@ClaudineClare I think if recent stories tell us anything, Johnson has certainly NOT been cowering behind his sofa. Quite the opposite 🤣🤣
He has been since Wednesday though.

I had another thought. The local election are in May. So, pandemic ends just before then. How very convenient. Will make a great line for the Tory pamphlets.

placemats · 17/01/2022 10:10

@Normandy144

Brilliant news. Can't come soon enough! Children who get it have it so mild and some don't even have symptoms but yet they're off school and missing out on their education for nothing. Bring it on I say!
What if the teacher has covid - who is going to educate them?
SeenYourArse · 17/01/2022 10:13

Anyone read the other thread about people enjoying dramatising and prolonging everything about Covid?? Plenty of those people on this thread as usual I see 🙄
I’m absolutely in the other camp!…It’s time to crack on with EVERYTHING and rebuild businesses and lives, if YOU are vulnerable or a worrier then YOU stay home, forever if you like 🤷‍♀️. “ we haven’t got a vaccine for Omicron” ffs it’s a bloody cold I’ve had it, my husband, both our young kids AND my 86 year old granny with a hear5 condition and diabetes ( we all caught if from her 🤦‍♀️) we were all fine and have felt poorlier with a bad head cold. You could as easily die from ‘flu (and thousands every winter do) we don’t hide at home to ‘save us ‘ from that.

TheKeatingFive · 17/01/2022 10:13

They don't diagnose cancer either.

Well no. What's that got to do with anything?

Let's put it this way. An airplane pilot has had Covid and is suffering from fatigue as a consequence, would you be happy for them to fly the plane?

I'm not sure what the relevance of that is either. He could have fatigue for any number of reasons that may or may not be related to covid. Some, mild lingering effects are common after any virus, it's not an enormous issue and calling it 'long covid' doesn't make it so.

I'm not saying long covid isnt a thing, but the data linked isn't even slightly helpful in us understanding the magnitude of it.

Silverswirl · 17/01/2022 10:14

@placemats a supply teacher if the teacher feels unwell, otherwise the teacher themselves. As has always been the case with any illness for teachers! In fact we have always been excepted to teach even when feeling unwell. And many of us have struggled through for years with painkillers and lemsips feeling like death warmed up out of a sense of duty.

SeenYourArse · 17/01/2022 10:14

Placemats…their teacher will only be off a week if that so their teaching assistant for that week like my sons school did no big deal for a single week.

Normandy144 · 17/01/2022 10:16

@placemats then the teacher will be off. But likely only a few days as they wont have to isolate. Omicron is mild. So just a few days supply teacher is all that is required. We can't keep isolating for something that isn't causing people many problems anymore. Everyone I know who has had since Christmas has carried on working (they work from home).

ClaudineClare · 17/01/2022 10:16

SeenYourArse Johnson is playing you like a fiddle. It is scary that people can't see through that.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/01/2022 10:17

But it is at secondary school where lots of teachers are missing. My y11 has has 7 absent teachers.

Chessie678 · 17/01/2022 10:18

@Sort0f
As I say, I’ve no doubt it’s a real condition that can cause organ damage. I just don’t think the ONS self-reported data which has no control group proves much about prevalence of long covid.

It seems likely that vaccination will significantly decrease the prevalence of long covid going forwards though I haven’t seen anything concrete on that.

placemats · 17/01/2022 10:19

So can you imagine writing off £4.3 billion in fraudulent Covid loans?

This is what Rishi Sunak has done.

captainofsuccess.com/2022/01/17/treasury-writes-off-4-3bn-in-covid-payments-lost-to-fraud/

Do you think this would happen with benefit fraud?

MarshaBradyo · 17/01/2022 10:19

In terms of absences case rates are high atm but will be different in Spring when this happens

placemats · 17/01/2022 10:23

I'm back invigilating National Exams, which is great news! So far the pupils have been fantastic; a real credit to their families and their teachers.

There are a lot of teachers off in the school, including teaching assistants.

As a worrier 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 people need to get on with it. Worriers like myself will take the jabs, wear the masks, sanitise and make our choices, I just want the freedom to make the choices and not have the rest of the country pulled into having to do similar to avoid what for many of them is a cold.

Maybe Govt could write to those of us who are at risk, like they did to tell us to shield in the early days, with advice to protect ourselves and let the healthy get on with it. No legal punishments, no threats, just information and freedom to make your own choices.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 17/01/2022 10:24

I really hope this is true.

blackcurrantjam · 17/01/2022 10:29

Good

placemats · 17/01/2022 10:29

You do not get irreversible brain damage from a cold.

LindaEllen · 17/01/2022 10:33

For all those saying the pandemic isn't over just because you stop isolation. It's either stop now, or carry on forever. There will always be new variants. It's not going to go away.

It will move from pandemic to endemic and things will get back to normal.

As soon as the media stop reporting about covid, life will feel a lot better. You'll be surprised how much the negative feelings came from them, rather than science.

placemats · 17/01/2022 10:37

I will continue to wear a mask and social distance and there is NOTHING you can do to stop me doing this.

TheKeatingFive · 17/01/2022 10:38

I don't think anyone is trying to stop you Confused

Nidan2Sandan · 17/01/2022 10:38

I had PVS for years caused by Glandualr fever, bed bound for almost half a year and I was only 19. I take PVS seriously, but the shouts of Long Covid are nonsense given you're classed as having long covid if symptoms carry on for 12 weeks. Thay could just be an annoying cough, but there ya go, the LC diagnosis you wanted.

I do believe LC exists, but I think it's actually not as prevalent as people think if you remove the usual symptoms from a virus that is already known to hang around for a good 1-3 months post infection. If, a year on, you're still stuck in bed then absolutely LC and you need support.

I read an article suggesting some LC symptoms could actually be menopause symptoms, interesting but speculation still worth considering as we all know menopause is wildly misunderstood.

As for children. They may get issues in future from covid infection. We wont know and cannot keep this level of panic up forever with the possibility it could happen. But lack of regular, sustained education is a guarantee for a bad outlook on their futures.

Imo, we need to treat this like any other virus. If you're too sick to work, stay home. Simple.

I think SSP needs reviewing badly, I think company sick policies thay penalise staff for having more than 2 episodes off sick need to be illegal. I do not think we should be asking the well to isolate.

HarrietteNightingale · 17/01/2022 10:39

Why would you think people would try to stop you, or even care whether you still wear a mask when others aren't?

LostFrog · 17/01/2022 10:43

I’m on the fence. I am on day 3 now and feel ok. If this was any other cold this is the point at which I would be thinking of going for a walk in the fresh air to clear my head and start to feel better, as it is I can’t even take the dog for a walk round the block and my 83 yo mum is fetching my shopping. I don’t think isolation is the answer any more.
