Are cases really dropping?

I understand that once you test positive on lateral flow you need to start self isolation and no pcr is required. You should report the result to nhs but how many people will bother doing that? I feel like everyone around me had covid but then I read that the cases are dropping and it’s just hard to believe..

@Dghgcotcitc many of those tests will be Secondary School kids LFTs. They have to log all results.

Who has to log results? The parent or school

kittensinthekitchen · 13/01/2022 10:43
@containsnuts pcrs can be positive for ages afterwards. That’s why people are told not to test again for 90 days unless they have symptoms so they essentially have to.

They’re more likely to pick up infection when your viral loads are highest at the start but that doesn’t mean they’ll be negative in someone hospitalised with an active covid infection.
That would depend on whether someone in hospital actually has an active covid infection, or if they're now hospitalised because of the damage done by covid, e.g. though the covid infection itself has cleared, the pneumonia it led to is the emergent issue.

Yesterdays tests will not be the secondary school tests they were taken last week (and yes the ones logged in school were logged) now secondary school pupils are taking them at home abs no more likely to log than anyone else, some will lots will not. But then on ever school thread its “kids aren’t testing” now in this thread its “oh it’s only kids that are testing”😂! The mental gymnastics required on this issue gives me a headache quite frankly. The question with statistics is “is that a big number?” I think 1.6 million in a population of 66 million is, others disagree, but it does beg the question what would be a big number for a single says worth or registered tests?

Very true! Re dc testing

Same as everyone has it - in class

High immunity then - oh no hardly anyone has had it

Quartz2208 · 13/01/2022 11:02

lets be honest who actually logs negative tests. DD logs it with the school but that is it.

A positive test I would log (and have with DS)

And I have managed to order LFT twice recently so they are I think around

kittensinthekitchen · 13/01/2022 11:04

@Quartz2208

I've always logged our household's negative tests. It's part of the testing process. I really don't understand why you wouldn't.

Quartz2208 · 13/01/2022 11:13

I suspect having talked to people most are like me - if it were simple yes but the time it takes. There should be a simple way to just log negative.

Because I think the positivity rate and testing numbers are skewed by that. DD logs hers with the school

Northsoutheastwest76 · 13/01/2022 11:16

Qell I can only speak for my dds schools and they test at home twice a week and are expected to log result both on NHS site and Google Classroom and take up is pretty high according to newsletters.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 13/01/2022 11:17

I also log my twice weekly negatives.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 13/01/2022 11:18

It literally takes a minute at most once you have an account.

MarshmallowFondant · 13/01/2022 11:26

At this stage we need to change the way we are counting.

Not cases. Hospitalisations only,

Dghgcotcitc · 13/01/2022 11:35

It actually takes ages with a child as you cannot save their details so you have to answer the questions all the time. I do it but mainly because I get so pissed of with the innumerate threads on here that no kids were testing when mine has tested religiously twice a week since the testing requirements came in…so I wanted that logged somewhere…not that it seems to make a difference to the arguement of course and those less pissed off with the constant let’s shut the schools threads on mumsnet may be less inclined to bother😂🤣!

onemouseplace · 13/01/2022 11:39

@ColettesEarrings

Lfts are counted in the numbers - they are subsequently removed if a follow up pcr is linked to the same account. It's why the advice to report a positive lft has been strengthened given the removal off confirmatory pcrs for asymptomatic cases.
Does that include positive LFTs reported AFTER a positive PCR on the 6/7 release programme? Because, if not then that’s at least 4 extra cases from me right there (they seem have been counted as first cases each time as I couldn’t get a covid pass until 10 days after my last positive LFT I reported.
Northsoutheastwest76 · 13/01/2022 11:47

@Dghgcotcitc my secondary dds do their own but I did my youngest and now when I go in it asks who the result is for and has her name on there. Not had to log any more for her so don't know how much info is saved tbh.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 13/01/2022 11:50

Actually just gone into the screen to check and on mine the info appears prefilled for DD. You do have to go through the screens but don't have to type again.

Quartz2208 · 13/01/2022 11:51

Yes that is all there for the school and test register which we do lot. Never is a minute for NHS especially if you click No for testing for work.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 13/01/2022 11:54

Lfts are counted in testa conducted which is why the figure is so high but positive cases are only counted once.

@carrythecan

Deaths, which are recorded as being within 28 days of a positive test, are rising because cases were very high. It does not mean that people are dying of Covid. The number of patients in ventilated beds in the UK is falling, and that is a much better indicator of the actually numbers of related patients very ill from Covid.
No, it's really not. Covid causes more problems than 'just' respiratory problems.
JugglingJanuary · 13/01/2022 12:43

@stitchmaker85

Also bear in mind with regards to covid cases 'in hospital' : My Nan had a bad fall on New Year's Day and has been in hospital since then. On Monday just gone she tested positive for covid, so she's actually caught it in the hospital. Fully vaccinated and boosted, and currently asymptomatic. Yet she still counts in the overall numbers. There will be many, many cases like this so don't take the numbers as people in hospital BECAUSE of covid, if she hadn't fallen she wouldn't have it at all.
Sorry to hear about your Nan, I hope she recovers from her fall & hasn't done too much damage to herself!

The 'in hospital' transmission rate is high, it needs addressing! Our hospital has currently stopped visiting to try to reduce risk.

I hope your Nan stays asymptomatic.

As for numbers, she needs to be included because she has got it, otherwise you can say Fred wouldn't have got it if he didn't drive a bus, Nancy wouldn't have got it if she didn't teach, Sam woukdnt have got it if he didn't go into the supermarket.

Covidworries · 13/01/2022 16:36

The data is definately made to look lower.
Lft arent counted in data from wales or scotland and are recorded in a different way.

I don't think that's correct for Scotland anymore as we are meant to log the result online if positive
Wilma55 · 13/01/2022 16:42

Positive results down 23% in last 7 days, tests conducted only down 3% in last 7 days
