Hi my 7 year old tested positive yesterday. Sunday night he was sick most of the night and had a bad headache. Also said his legs were hurting and had the shivers but he felt quite warm. His temperature was normal all night. Yesterday he was a lot brighter and slept fine last night. This morning he has woken up and his eyes look swollen and puffy. Has anyone else had this? His 11 year old brother has also had covid over Christmas but he didnt have swollen eyes. Thanks

Hello, I have heard this eye issues can be common with covid. However, if it was me I would give childrens antihistamine in case it’s an allergy issue, to see if it helps.

Make sure that you give him an antihistamine for children, I think they have Benadryl kids

TheVeryThing · 11/01/2022 12:15

Yes, my 10 year old this with Covid. It only lasted a couple of days, antihistamine is a good call. Hope he feels better soon.

Moppiehen · 11/01/2022 12:17

My 12 year old had the same. It lasted 5/6 days. She’s fine now.

I would go to the doctor if you dont see any reduction in the swelling after giving the anti histamine.

I've also heard about eye issues. Have a look at longcovidkids for symptoms in children. Hope antihistamine works and your little one feels better soon.

That's made me wonder if my 2 kids had it over Christmas, they had a bad cold and green gunky eyes but no pinkness and my baby had puffy eyes. They then went really red and sore looking underneath for just over a week. I had the same cold but no gunky eyes just a really sore throat and felt tired and a bad cough. But all lateral flows and pcrs came back negative!
Has your child got redness under the eyes of green gunk?
Hope it resolves soon, pharmacy might be able to suggest some over the counter drops maybe

There was a very alarmist headline on the BBC homepage the other day about a boy who contracted orbital cellulitis after covid. He was hospitalised for a couple of days and was fine, but I guess the BBC posted the story to make people aware of it as a possible side effect of the virus and warn them not to let it go untreated.

(Story here - warning, it does sound quite scaremongery but does end completely well! www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-59883902)

I was going to comment about the boy with orbital cellulitis.

Definitely keep an eye on it.

Not Covid related at all, but my DS had puffy / swollen eyes and GP wasn't sure. One eyelid rhen went very swollen like in the link the PP shared. We caught it pretty early I think, as he was not at all unwell but he did get an urgent referral to eye hospital and a course of antibiotics. He was lucky not to need IV antibiotics.

I don't want to scare you, as my DS made a super quick recovery, but we think his swollen eye lid was linked to a virus / sinuses. But seeing the eye of the boy who had Covid it reminded me of my son.

Hi i saw the story about the 9 year old boy after i googled. I will definitely keep an eye out. His eyes are less swollen today but still quite puffy. Its more underneath his eyes now.
