So according to reports they are going to stop handing out LFT and will be stopping mass testing - this is excellent news for both the tax payer and the environment and surely marks a clear path this whole thing becoming endemic Smile

OP posts:
SephrinaX · 08/01/2022 22:55

What report was that?

tintodeverano2 · 08/01/2022 22:56

Source?

Infracat · 08/01/2022 22:56

Yeah thats really great for the vulnerable. Since when did the world become so selfish. Its depressing and very sad.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 08/01/2022 22:57

The world has always been harsh and selfish - do you think this is a new thing? You must have lived a sheltered life up till now.
sashagabadon · 08/01/2022 22:58

It would certainly be a positive step for the environment.

PickAChew · 08/01/2022 22:58

What reports?

Whitefire · 08/01/2022 23:01

This is all I can find, and I am not sure what the 'Whitehall Source' said is as clear cut as that. It has always been obvious that testing would be scaled back, but I am not sure this translates into completely stopped.

Times leading on it here; End of free lateral flow tests as country told to live with Covid

I think it makes sense although not sure where it leaves vulnerable people and their visitors.

My work was informed on Thursday we have to lft daily as we are critical workers so that contradicts your thoughts.

southeastdweller · 08/01/2022 23:06

Six billion pounds of our money spent on these tests - it's ridiculous but at least the government are still moving in the right direction at long last.

VaccineSticker · 08/01/2022 23:07

An endemic is when they have a stable virus that has a predictable outcome like the flu every year.
This coronavirus is still all over the place.
How can it be classed as an endemic at this stage?

However, I agree with you on the point that it’s better for the environment.

Maybe if we shut our ears and shout la la la covid will disappear too.

From what I read certain sectors would still have access. Health, education and I'm sure another sector but can't remember now.
LethargicActress · 08/01/2022 23:08

For the sake of the waste they produce, this is a good thing. Presumably they will still be available to buy if people need them.

WeatherwaxOn · 08/01/2022 23:08

Stupid.
How many more have to die needlessly? Why can't we have a government that actually give a shit about people?
If we didn't waste so much money on pointless posturing stuff then there'd be plenty to keep people safe.

Seems to me that unless something is likely to make a millionaire richer then the rest of us are expendable.

Do you also think we should be mass testing for all of the other viruses that are not harmful to the population but potentially fatal to a small minority? Such as Chicken pox, Flu and the cold. If we want to save the vulnerable we can't be picky and choosey about what we test for now.

How about we all just wrap everyone up in airtight bubbles and never leave the house again?

TheHoptimist · 08/01/2022 23:12

What will the mums netters who gets every time they leave the house do now?

MangoM · 08/01/2022 23:12

I wonder whether the key word here is 'free'
Not that testing is to stop altogether, but someone will need to pay for them. Employers? Individuals? I haven't a clue 🤷‍♀️

It's not classed as endemic but like the OP says (and the Education Secretary in the Times article), it's moving towards that.
Ellieboolou33 · 08/01/2022 23:14

Wish there was testing available for me when a virus left me with permanent hearing loss in one ear… I was told by doctors “just to learn to live with it”.
MissPeregrine · 08/01/2022 23:15

I suppose it will help the numbers to go down….

itwasntaparty · 08/01/2022 23:17

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 08/01/2022 23:24

Finally a plan to live with it rather than the bullshit restrictions and lockdowns
