Why does Covid cause backache?

Just that really.

I'm day 5 from a positive LFT and waiting on a postal PCR but have symptoms so am confident I've got covid - swollen glands, throat, smell/taste and generally have felt terrible.

Couple of days ago I woke in the night with back pain and now I'm starting to feel a bit better but this nagging lower back pain is bothering me.

I've googled and can see it's a symptom but I'm curious as to why? What causes it?

Suppose it's the same with the taste/smell?

Does anyone know? My colleague was getting all dramatic saying it was my kidney etc but it's really low down almost my hips.

Have you spent more time sitting/lying then usual? That was DS theory on his sore back. He spent so much time in bed.

My worse symptom has been the been 4he back pain. This is my second time with covid (waiting on pcr but absolutely convinced it is) and both times the back pains have been just awful. It's been in different areas of my back too. Lower back. Upper back, my neck and shoulder area. No idea why but it was really bad.

Yes this is a good call as I am isolating away from the family in the bedroom and have been in bed for a few days.

I presumed lower back pain associated with covid would be because of kidney inflammation; I think I’ve reached that conclusion because I know CKD patients are at higher risk with covid.

I also presumed upper back pain was associated with the lungs in the context of covid.

That could all be bollocks though!

Mine definitely wasn't linked to laying down too much, it was one of my first symptoms before I knew it was covid so was carrying on with normal life, plus I'm a single mum looking after my 2 children. I haven't been able to do lots of lying down!

I thought this to begin with, but don’t think so now.

I don't know but I'm right there with you. Right from the start, aching lower back, hips, pelvis and right down my thighs. Its like period pain but worse and it can fuck off!

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

It's a really odd symptom isn't it. My friend who recently had covid compared it to labour pains.

CatAlice · 08/01/2022 14:05

My theory is it's kidney related. It wasn't my main symptom but I had lower back pain for a couple of weeks and while I was in hospital another patient had been admitted because of back pain caused by covid.

Pegasushaswings · 08/01/2022 14:08

My husband had backache as one of the early symptoms of covid too, ive not heard if it being a symptom until now though.

PollyIndia · 08/01/2022 14:10

I think it is just due to general inflammation isn’t it? I had lots of aches around my upper spine and shoulders but gentle yoga and stretches helped.

WhiteCatmas · 08/01/2022 14:13

I had back pain as a side effect of the AZ vaccine, so it’s quite possible.

Ffffffs · 08/01/2022 14:21

I had awful backache for months after first covid bout, and now 18 months later I still get persistent mild pain.

Had lots of kidney investigations because it was so painful and scrunchy and persistent, but all clear. My Dr and I didn't think it was my back because I could bend & exercise OK and I did lots of core work because of lack of any other options, which didn't improve matters (other than acquiring visible abs for first time!).

Now just recovering from 3rd bout of covid, had v bad lower backache for a few days, was convinced I was about to slip a disc, but seems to have eased. Would be good to understand more and know if there's anything that can be done!

Mine was like sciatica, all in my lower back, hips and down my legs. No idea what causes it but it's definitely a covid thing.

maddy68 · 08/01/2022 14:50

I have started my period mid covid omg the period pain and also in my back. Horrific

JammyGeorge · 08/01/2022 15:01

Thanks for the replies, I'd read somewhere that backache was common with omnicron so when it started it made sense but I just couldn't fathom what causes it.

I feel generally ok today apart from the back.

It does feel a bit period like and is very low for the kidneys.
