So annoyed at my parents

TheBeesKnee · 07/01/2022 09:36

Yesterday was orthodox Christmas Eve and DP and I visited parents for dinner.

After 30 mins ish it was revealed that my DF's colleagues had Covid but he was testing negative.

We decided to stay for dinner as at that point we had obviously been exposed.

DF has just text me to say that he tested positive this morning.

I am so bloody annoyed at the pair of them. They obviously didn't mention this as they didn't want to miss Christmas again but that's no excuse really. I've had Covid twice and the second time was via my parents, I'm pretty sure.

I haven't had my booster yet, although DP is triple jabbed.

Just a rant as there's nothing to be done at this point.

The longer you stayed around DF the higher your chances of catching it. I can understand you didn't want to rush out but you increased your chances of catching it.

They should have told you DF was awaiting PCR results so you had the decision to make before arriving. I'd be annoyed too.

Choux · 07/01/2022 10:04

Hope you stay well.

TheChip · 07/01/2022 10:06

Hopefully the previous two times you've had it on top of your two vaccines will ensure your antibodies are up enough to protect you.

Bobholll · 07/01/2022 10:49

You’ve had if twice so I wouldn’t worry too much!

Your Dad probably was negative yesterday & positive today. Can take a few days from exposure to showing up on a LF. I mean, maybe it would have been polite to mention he was a close contact but it sounds like you wouldn’t have gone & I bet they were sad about that.

Im not avoiding anyone who is a close contact. They may or may not have it but having had it twice myself, I just don’t care anymore. Im sure I’ll get it again several times over the next few years. Oh well 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m triple jabbed, I’m quite happy to take the risk with covid & crack on personally. I do acknowledge the NHS is struggling & some mitigations are probably needed on a collective level.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 07/01/2022 10:57

Sorry but I think you are completely over reacting Considering how rampant omicron is at the moment. The only way you will avoid being in the company of anyone who is a potential close contact is to stay home 24/7. You'll be working with people who have positive cases at home, If you have dc they'll most certainly be mixing with someone who is a close contact, if you go to a cafe, the gym,or even the corner shop, you will likely to be in the company of someone who is a close contact of someone covid positive.

TheBeesKnee · 10/01/2022 21:18

And of course we have now both tested positive.

Absolutely kicking myself now.

Why are you so late in getting booster?

What are you kicking yourself for? Unless neither of you ever leave the home chances are you'd have caught it from elsewhere eventually anyway. It's rampant out there, we will all succumb to it at some point probably more than once . I hope you are both OK and recover fast.

Why fo you keep insisting on using such poor logic?

Seriously.

You don't run head first into a situation that puts you (and others) at risk IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC.

You seriously sound derranged.

OP is totally correct to be pissed off. I would be furious as well.

We just visited a family member for a NY Day lunch who is CEV and all 20 of us visiting did a Pcr test the day before. Every single one of us sent proof when they got the results.

Its called safety, respect, and manners.

I suggest you find some!

Free PCR’s? Or did you all pay for private ones? Fair enough if you did get private ones I suppose.

Did you pay for those tests?

Delatron · 10/01/2022 22:22

Must have been very expensive all those PCRs. Since none of you could possibly have been close contacts or had any symptoms...

BurntO · 10/01/2022 22:22

Eeek I dunno OP. They were negative. You chose to stay based on that fact, right? If they’d said nothing I’d have understood but they did tell you, however late.

Maybe she meant LFTs?

Or they lied on the forms? Unlikely as they said they did the tests the day before. There is no way PCRs would be guaranteed to come back in time.

Delatron · 10/01/2022 22:26

Very sensible, logical post by @Wellbythebloodyhell

I think it’s quite easy to see who the ‘deranged’ one is. (Nice term).
The one who flings insults (based on nothing) around on multiple threads. Then when asked to explain disappears to insult people on another thread....

Delatron · 10/01/2022 22:34

My first thought would be to be worried about my elderly (I assume) parents. Covid is everywhere so unless you’re a hermit it will be difficult to avoid.

My Mum brought it to our house (we’d already had it). I didn’t think badly of her (she caught it from
My niece) I was just worried about whether she’d be ok. She was quite lapse with the testing but no anger here.

Exhausteddog · 10/01/2022 22:44

We work in London (travelling in peak time by train) and have kids in a large secondary school. I've always been if the opinion we'll get covid at some point.over Xmas we took lfts each time we met family.
As it was one of the family members we were most concerned about potentially passing it to, gave it to us. (I don't think they had done an lft before) They tested positive while we were with them. It was a bit frustrating and a pretty crap Xmas holidays but I don't hold them responsible - it's everywhere, and if we hadn't caught it then we would probably have caught it another time pretty soon.

Jenjenn · 10/01/2022 22:46

Hope you are feeling well op. I would be fuming too. Yeah yeah it is rampant..you could have caught it anywhere...but they were close contacts and should have told you before you went over. Even if you feel well now you have to isolate which is an absolute pain in the arse.

The family member in question is older and is CEV.

She used to love throwing dinners every year for the extended family, but has had to shield for two years.

She doesn't have a lot of time left given her age & health, so we all agreed this was the safest way for her to be able to have a dinner.

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 10/01/2022 23:10

Bloody hell. So your group spent probably over £1000 on tests! Not everyone can afford that don’t you know. And soon with the withdrawal of free LFTs many people just won’t be able to test for every family meet-up.

Snowisfalling33 · 10/01/2022 23:15

There's so many cases at the moment that if I isolated for each contact I wouldn't have left the house since mid-November.
So we just keep testing and getting on with it.
I honestly don't think your df did anything wrong here. It's just a shame he tested positive the next day. Have you shown any actual concern for how he is by the way? Or is your concern all reserved for yourself?

One of these days you are likely to end up infecting somebody with your lack of risk assesment capacity. And that person could end up dying because of it.

What then...

I don't think "oops" is going to be a good enough excuse then is it?

Buzzinwithbez · 10/01/2022 23:19

I hope your parents are ok, op. Flowers

Agree that it was expensive, but there are ways around having to test by actively reducing your exposure to concentrated viral loads.
  1. Outside
  2. Well ventilated
  3. Restrict Group Size

Doing 1-3 massively reduces the risks of a serious infection.

I have not been indoors in a pub for two years now because most pubs have terrible measures in place. Outside ones (in Surrey) are no problem.

So far, nobody in the family has gotten infected.
