Vaccine inequity in operation. Novak Djokovic gets a medical exemption from being vaxxed for the Australian Open, while a 17-yr-old Indian player is denied entry because India has not begun vaccinating the under 18.

Oh yes of course. The comments of complete unknowns on t'internet. They know more than science obviously - that's me told.

The guy is a completely arrogant twat and really isn't wanted here.

Pity he didn't win a decent personality in one of those tournaments along the way Grin

[quote EmmaH2022]Thanks to those who answered my query

I have another....

who has to take a PCR by law? The stories about queues are shocking, is this true? I guess no one would stand in a queue for hours unless there was a legal reason they had to, like proof for working. People must be missing work to queue? I am so confused. It makes England look efficient (well, I have found it fine but I know some haven't).

It's all true. We went for a PCR test on Sunday. Left home at 5.30am. Arrived at deive through 6am. We waited nearly 4 hours.

Test results are MIA. No RAT test available as an alternative. Total chaos.

A lot of the queues have been caused by everyone needing pcr tests to travel interstate (this has been changed by most states now). They have to be done within 72 hours of travel and given that it’s school summer holidays here and no one has been out of their states forever, the demand is high. We went to South Australia for Christmas and needed them for there. That’s five of us queuing for tests despite being well. We were lucky, ours were very efficient even though they were done in different centres. DD1 and I waited 15 minutes for ours and our results were back within 15 hours. The longest wait was DD3 - 2 hours, but her result was back the next day too.
There was an issue last week in Melbourne when sites had to close because the temperature was nearing 40 degrees which is obviously too hot for the staff working in PPE in tents.
All this, plus the numbers rising rapidly due to Omicron has put huge pressure on a service which has run really well until now. We haven’t used LFT/RATs until now either and demand is outstripping supply until new stock arrives. Hopefully, not long now..

@derxa

Oh, well. If you say so. (Get help!) Well today I'm off to the dermatology dept of my local hospital to start treatment for vaccine induced psoriasis. It's misery. I'm covered from head to foot in itchy plaques. I'm double vaxxed and my family have all had the booster. I'm cynical now to say the least. Why would a sportsman whose body is his means of earning a living risk damage?
That has been directly linked to your jab? Really?

It will risk his career more if he isn't allowed to play in tournaments

ispepsiokay · 06/01/2022 12:31

The rules on covid vaccines are clear, he chose not to get vaccinated.

So many of the countries nurses and teachers (to name a few) have left their profession due to the decision not to vaccinate, I really hope ScoMo (or immigration) doesn't back down on this

IntermittentParps · 06/01/2022 14:02

@cherin

I think the underlying problem is not his stance against vaccine, but the fact that he has regularly underplayed the impact of covid and its risks- he has personally been responsible for organising a tennis tournament in the ex Yugoslavian countries where it was clear that none of the rules and recommendations for covid mitigation were respected, and this caused covid hotspots (I believe at a time where vaccines were either not available or not much diffused in the region). Him, family and others caught covid at the time, if I well remember? But more importantly this caused an increase of cases within the communities. He apologised for this, I understand some of his thinking behind it (having Croats and Serbians playing together is not actually a bad thing!) but it was a stupid idea and showed to the world that he didn’t believe the recommendations for public health protections would apply to him or to his world.
I agree. Well, I DO think his stance against vaccination is a problem, but he did not do himself any favours running his ridiculous tournament. His behaviour was like a feudal lord. One rule for the little people and another for us, and look at my beneficence in bringing people together.
Ethelswith · 06/01/2022 14:17

Yes, vaccine induced psoriasis is real, though rare, flare ups of existing psoriasis also occur after viral illness, but is uncommon.

It's not unique to the covid vaccines, and AFAIK is not happening in unexpectedly high numbers.

The advice for those who have psoriasis is to get vaccinated., as the benefits significantly outweigh the risk of a rare reaction (and of course it could hapoen if you catch covid)

If the person is also in high dose immune suppressant medication, they should seek the advice of their hospital consultant to decide optimum timing for jabs

derxa · 06/01/2022 14:17

Vaccines are often a trigger for immune system related illnesses such as psoriasis. Any health professional I've discussed this with have agreed it could well be the case. I've reported it to the Yellow Card scheme. Their reports show thousands of incidences of skin complaints triggered by the vaccine. I've been very unlucky.

It will risk his career more if he isn't allowed to play in tournaments
This Australian situation is not going to be repeated. Anyway he's rich as Croesus

Yes I agree with all of that
ilovesooty · 06/01/2022 14:25

@CloudPop

If Djokovic really wanted to make a stand against vaccination, he would have loudly boycotted the event. Same as sportspeople have done for decades when they want to stand up for their beliefs. Not try and bend the system and pretend to be exempt. That's just being deceitful and gutless.
Exactly. And well said Nadal. You have class that Djokovic can never aspire to
Ethelswith · 06/01/2022 14:27

My psoriasis first appeared after a viral illness (measles, in the 1960s) and was linked, so it's something that has been known about for over 50 years. Chances are I would have developed it in later life anyhow, but the stress of the virus made it show with unusually early onset.

If you don't have psoriasis yourself, then chances are you'll never have come across the issue before.

ilovesooty · 06/01/2022 14:28

@SquirrelG

Well he won't be earning much if he finds he can't play in tournaments will he?

Good.
derxa · 06/01/2022 14:30

How are you now Ethelswith ?

EmmaH2022 · 06/01/2022 14:41

Thanks to all for answering questions

I really feel for everyone caught up in this, whether it's testing or adverse reactions....what a nightmare. [tea] all round.

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 06/01/2022 14:54

@BananaBender

The exemption decision is extremely unpopular here in Australia. It's such bullshit. Melbourne has been through the longest lockdowns in the world and then this antivaxxing wanker gets an exemption.
Good. He gets an exemption which shows up how idiotic the restrictions are in Melbourne.
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 06/01/2022 14:56

I have an autoimmune disease. RA and can have flares. The vaccine could technically make one of my flares worse. I've been in pain most of this year, no idea or not if I'd be worse or better if I hadn't been vaccinated. You stated it was poison. No need for spouting such rubbish.

I apologise if I upset anyone. I know it's not poison. It was just an emotional response because I'm in pain. Flowers
LumosSolem · 06/01/2022 15:16

@derxa I'm so sorry to read about your psoriasis- someone close to me has psoriasis too although nowhere near as severe as yours, I know how unpleasant it is for them so it must be awful for you to deal with this.

Like you mentioned, you have been incredibly unfortunate to have this kind of reaction. I do hope you are able to get some good treatment for it.

Thanks. I'll stop derailing the thread now

CharlotteRose90 · 06/01/2022 15:26

I hope he does get sent home . If not they’ll be a problem in Australia. If nationals can’t travel or do anything without being vaccinated then an un national should follow the same. His own fault and he knew the risks hence why his team faked his exemption letter. I wonder how many other countries he’s used it in.

Cocoabutterformula · 06/01/2022 16:03

Nadal is so classy. Can you imagine Federer behaving like Djokovic?!

ilovesooty · 06/01/2022 17:07

Absolutely not. Djokovic might be one of the GOAT in tennis terms, but as a man he isn't fit to lace the shoes of either Nadal or Federer.

I see his relatives are now claiming that he's being kept in "prison".

Cocoabutterformula · 06/01/2022 17:23

Nuts isn't it, his father bleating on about trying to get justice not just for him but the world, I mean wtaf?!
