To be horrified at kids being 'labelled' like this ?

DD senior school age goes back tomorrow - no exemptions and she will be masked up as requested despite my absolute disgust at the policy. The school has asserted that children with exemptions will need to provide proof and will be made to wear a badge or lanyard to show their exemption on school property and transport.
AIBU to be horrified that children will be 'badged' like this - surely not wearing the mask is sufficient to show their exemption for a policy that is advisory and with zero proof of efficacy ?

Our school asks for lanyards too. If you asked a pupil I suspect it helps reduce the number of times that they are embarrassed by questions from peers and teachers who don't know whether the pupil is being rebellious or has a medical exemption.

Although it's not a fool proof way to prove that your parents aren't anti-maskers/anti-vaxxers who gave you a lanyard just because, any less hassle has to be a good thing ?

I think it's unreasonable to expect a secondary school teacher to know the lanyard status of a random pupil. 1800 kids at our school.

PAFMO · 04/01/2022 14:26

@KenDodd

What actually are these mask exemptions anyway? A lot of people say asthma, but asthma UK say you can and should wear a mask. What else? Severe learning disability?
There are, in fairness, lots of reasons why a secondary school student is exempt from wearing a mask. I have several students with additional needs, mainly autism. None of them have any problems wearing a mask and it's never come up with our regular meetings with their parents. That's not to say that all children are the same, as parents on this thread have said (about their own children)

All the more reason for those parents, and those children, to be officially exempted, and the pretend-exempts (and their pretend-exempt parents) to do those children and everyone else a favour and put one on.

When's started she was still 11 for most of the first 2 terms. After a couple of classes on day 1 she decided it was easier just to wear a mask than have to keep explaining. That's probably why

@dilly123
Laughing wryly at your complaints that people are excluded from society when as a non-vaccinated, "I've never taken a test" "didn't wear a mask then, won't wear a mask now" loud and proud Covid denier, you don't even see how much you are part of the reason that children (CHILDREN FFS) are being asked to prove that they have a reasonable exemption from mask wearing.
You just don't get it, do you?
People like you refusing to follow regulations mean that people who actually can't, are asked for proof.
People who are vulnerable are still ("two years down the line" to quote another of your favourites as to why the regulations you have never followed don't work) scared to go out because of people like you, who could be infected, but because you've never done a test, you'd never know.

And you think you speak for a disabled child?

You speak for nobody. Except yourself.

Meh.

If they are exempt, then wearing a lanyard no more marks you as different, or gives away the reason for the exemption than not wearing the mask.

If they aren't exempt then they should be wearing their mask.

Having the lanyard has 3 effects:

  • it helps the staff differentiate between those that can't wear a mask, and those who don't want to/have forgotten
  • it means exempt kids aren't asked 15 times a day to put on their mask
  • it means that everyone is treated equally in having to wear 'something' which will hopefully deal with kids in the 'you can't tell me to wear something' category.
CatsArePeople · 04/01/2022 14:43

Just as a lovely piece of anecdotal evidence.
My niece had Covid, and was wearing a mask at times indoors to stop spread to other household members.
At one point she coughed up a huge amount of phlegm and the mask caught it all.
Her Mum carefully removed the mask and disposed.
Proof they work I think.

She disposed of it in a proper biozard container i hope. Such a deadly virus afterall.

It’s going to be a bit difficult for the OP to maintain the indignant self-righteous stance against labelling people now, I think.

My daughter is exempt because she has Tourette’s.

99% of the time, the nature of her tics prevent her from wearing a mask, although occasionally she can tolerate one for a few minutes

My daughter’s college gives out laminated passes for those who are exempt, although she already wears a couple of lanyards. We had to provide proof of her diagnosis of Tourette’s

Ironic that the OP was fearing exempt pupils would be ‘labelled’ but uses derogatory labels against others.

I'm very pleased to hear that MNHQ won't tolerate that term.

Suzi888 · 04/01/2022 15:03

I couldn’t get worked up about this.

I don't really see how OP can be a parent tbh

Kids wet the bed, teens wet the bed, postpartum/pregnant women often have issues with urinary incontinence.

It isn't anything to be ashamed of and takes a weird kind of person to try and use it as an insult Hmm

ufucoffee · 04/01/2022 15:05

You've obviously never worked in a school OP. The amount of pupils saying they are exempt without proof would be v high.

RJnomore1 · 04/01/2022 15:09

It’s nothing like a blue badge. The car displays the badge not the child.

It’s important we keep an eye on how we are dealing with things like this as a society. The name calling is frankly awful though.

Will this discretion be used when posts include other terms such as flat earther, tin foil hatter, anti-Vaxer or conspiracy theorist etc & people with alternative views to the narrative termed as low intelligence or mentally ill ???
