Her fellow students and teachers died or collapsed in large numbers? Right. I believe this is the meaning of drop like flies, unless you wanted to use a hyperbole?

Every day's a school day.

@LesComfortables Do you honestly believe that because none of the young people you know got ill with covid that no young people anywhere did? The 10,000+ children with long covid symptoms lasting over a year are all making it up? The hundreds of cases of post-covid PIMS just fooled all the doctors? My ds with organ damage from covid has managed to trick us? His friend left with asthma after covid is just having a laugh? You’re lucky not to know any children who got ill and it’s completely ignorant (and a bit sick) to dismiss the kids who are going through something pretty horrible.

LesComfortables · 06/01/2022 18:02

I personally know many, many, many more young and old people whose mental health has taken a horrible knock as result of Covid, it's incredibly sad. There's such a weird tone on this thread, so bitter and clenched up, almost a bit obsessive. So odd and sad Sad.

BewareTheLibrarians · 06/01/2022 18:12

You personally know more than 10,000 people whose mental health has taken a knock from covid! Wow! That’s spectacular. But also believable, as you seem like a fantastic person!

Ds having to deal with being in pain every day and not being able to live his life as before, because of covid, has hit his mental health pretty badly too, but I wonder why you don’t give a shit about that? Bit hypocritical.

“Bitter, clenched up, a bit obsessive”
Yet they’re not the ones minimising illness in children, which is a pretty shitty thing to do. What a way to spend your time.

OMG

Blubells · 06/01/2022 18:23

On the BBC radio news they just said that the evidence for face masks in schools remains 'inconclusive'

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 06/01/2022 18:37

Well, at the moment they do have to wear them in class.

I've bought (v. Pricey) washable FFP2 masks for DS, so hopefully that will mitigate his risk a bit.

At least they are finally reporting that. Scandalous that the restriction remains without evidence of efficacy.
JangolinaPitt · 06/01/2022 19:11

At least some school kids have some gumption

Thickasmincepie · 06/01/2022 19:16

I just want them to bring in their own pens.

Could parents maybe supply them occasionally? More than 1, please, so that when they've systemically destroyed one, they have a spare.

noblegiraffe · 06/01/2022 19:21

Offensive to suggest children who wear masks ‘lack gumption’.

AlexaShutUp · 06/01/2022 19:26

It's nothing to do with lacking gumption ffs. My dd wears a mask in crowded spaces because she knows it's the right thing to do. No amount of gumption would change that.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 06/01/2022 19:37

Long Covid kids have just reported this from latest ONS data - the way kids have been let down is appalling. And for all those adults pushing kids to say they can't stand masks - I suspect they'd like long covid a lot less, and you simply can't tell who will be affected, plenty of previously healthy children have long covid. It's horrifying.

👧 117,000 children now living with long Covid
+40,000 more than October

👦 20,000 children for longer than a year
+6,000 more than October

🚸 12,000 children have their "activity limited a lot"
+4,000 more than October

Well said.

The way some adults are willing to force kids into situations where literally nothing is done to minimise risk of disability is truly shocking.

Grin

I do feel better now that an excellent teacher like noble has confirmed I'm using this phrase correctly.

Seems DD is too so the mask isn't hampering her brain's ability to function (unlike covid, which causes long term brain changes even after mild cases).

This thread on Twitter seems relevant/interesting. Nice to see the word “iffy” too.

mobile.twitter.com/trishgreenhalgh/status/1479469449988255748

“Masks are highly effective at reducing transmission in closed spaces where people gather together. This is because of the laws of physics (see my pinned tweet). The laws of physics apply in schools. Therefore masks work in schools as well as out of schools.”

“The UK Department of Education has released a report on a schools mask study which had major methodological flaws and (unsurprisingly) produced iffy results. It hasn't been peer reviewed or published in a scientific journal.”

BewareTheLibrarians · 07/01/2022 15:35

Thanks @theemperorhasnoclothes
The updated ONS figures aren’t great to see, are they. Especially the 12,000 “activity limited a lot”. I wonder if people realise what that looks like in children, and how distressing it is for those children. That’s something that doesn’t often get brought up in the discussions around mental health.

The mental health of children who have had to become young carers to ill parents/parents with long covid or complications is also something that needs to be recognised and supported.
