Pubs in our area have decided to close at 10pm tonight due to the high rates of covid and staff shortages.
Any other areas doing the same?
How many other businesses will have to collectively close before Boris /Rishi steps in ?

Ours aren't closing early but the rules have changed so they have to go back to table service only (I'm in Scotland) so our local has had to refund loads of tickets to their NYE party tonight as they don't have enough space to have them all seated.

There also are loads of staff shortages, between people isolating and a lot of places struggling to hire staff as it's so uncertain just now

Warmduscher · 31/12/2021 11:11

@Xmasiscancelledagain

I'm of the belief that Covid is a very convenient get out clause for staff who don't want to work over the festive period. Its amazing how many people have Covid and a guaranteed 10 days off over Christmas when their annual leave request was cancelled. Hmm. Where DH works, they are being asked to work tomorrow and Sunday when they wouldn't usually and its amazing how many fit and healthy people have suddenly developed Covid in the last 24 hours.
So you’re extrapolating what’s apparently happened with some people in your DH’s workplace to the entirety of hospitality based on what evidence, exactly?

Most people at the lower levels in hospitality are on zero hours contracts. If they fake an illness and don’t work, they don’t get paid.

Anyone going out tonight needs their heads checking.

Seriously, who wants to usher in 2022 with Covid?

DickMabutt73962 · 31/12/2021 11:21

but what is the difference between 10 pm and 1 am?

2021 and 2022

Sirzy · 31/12/2021 11:23

A fair few places have shut because of staff shortages but the ones that are open are open as they would normally be.

Why?

I am going out. To a small place owned by a family member. I have been in on other pre covid New Years and it’s never packed so I doubt it will be tonight especially as they have scaled back on what they are doing.

We have all lateral flow tested so have done what we can.

Having seen how much they have struggled to keep the business open the last few years I am happy to help then when I can especially as I know they are doing all they can to keep people safe.

Thewiseoneincognito · 31/12/2021 11:32

@Sirzy

Why? 😳

There’s no point in wasting my fingerprints on my iPad to explain why not to you.

So because you have made the choice not to go out which is perfectly reasonable to do so everyone should think the same as you?

People will make their own decisions as to what is right for them.

Exactly. People who don't want to go out dont have to. Not being forced out. Plus it's a risk taken anytime you go out really. A lot of places round me are fully booked so seems majority a just getting on

We are vaccinated, exposed to it most days and still haven't had symptomatic disease. We went out last night as working New Year's Day but would have been happy to go out tonight. It's endemic now and I have no interest in becoming a hermit
bumblefeline · 31/12/2021 12:01

No pubs shutting here tonight.

My 19 year old is off out tonight. I just told her some random on a website told her she needs her head checking. After what we have been through this past year I won't type her or my response.

No one has got the bloody right to shame anyone for going out.

Bobholll · 31/12/2021 12:02

@Thewiseoneincognito - because not everyone is crapping their pants about covid & trying to get on with life? Do I need my head checking for taking my kids to a sold out panto yesterday (with their grandparents who chose to still come)? Or to a busy softplay this morning? Or out for dinner tonight? Should I not go for a little shop in the local shopping centre after lunch? Should I have just kept my kids indoors in fear all Christmas?

I’ve had covid twice. I’m triple jabbed. I’m not remotely worried about catching it again. Fully appreciate it’s a terrible virus for some people & those who are vulnerable or look after the vulnerable etc will take a very different view. But I & my husband are young, healthy & vaccinated. My kids are young & I don’t believe it to be a worry for them. I wear a mask & respect distance. I test very regularly. I can make my own judgement call on my activities & ‘risk’..

Caspianberg · 31/12/2021 12:16

It’s a 10pm curfew where we live now on restaurants. So most locally will close at 8pm. The ‘childrens’ fireworks will be at 5pm when I assume most will go out so they can see and grab mulled wine

ChippyDucks150 · 31/12/2021 12:23

All the pubs round my way are closing at 10pm too. NYE tickets have all been refunded, and some of the kitchens are closed due to staff shortages due to covid. It's utterly shite.

FestiveFuckery · 31/12/2021 12:24

Most of the pubs here have had to close til January. Either because of covid induced staff shortages or lack of lateral flows meaning they feel they are putting people at risk. I imagine it's a real kick in the teeth for them.

Fireworks at 5 for kids sounds lovely tbh
feelsobadfeltsogood · 31/12/2021 12:27

One of our good friends is a door supervisor at a bar in town and he's hoping and praying they shut tonight he's dreading it totally!
But this should all have been decided on about a week ago,
Not now

Caspianberg · 31/12/2021 12:53

@herecomesthsun - I’m usually in bed by the time midnight comes around, so the 5pm fireworks are ideal. They have a much higher turnout. If awake I’ll watch the later ones from window indoors where it’s warmer.

FrownedUpon · 31/12/2021 13:07

A couple of pubs here aren’t opening due to staff shortages. No one’s going out anyway. Covid is rife here.

AskingforaBaskin · 31/12/2021 13:08

As nightclubs are closed in Wales my husband and the staff are being moved to an English venue as they are short staffed due to Covid. Already sold thousands of tickets and a lot of people from Wales are going over.

Hopefully the night goes smoothly.

Camperbann · 31/12/2021 13:10

Nope, open until the early hours here, sadly I can't go but I hope they do get lots of custom and manage to cushion their finances a bit after the batting their industry has taken.

Kite22 · 31/12/2021 13:15

My dd's shift tonight finishes at 8am......

(That is in a bar / club, not a hospital or other emergency service - so it doesn't seem like places are shutting early where she is).

DickMabutt73962 · 31/12/2021 13:19

For anyone still banging on about staying in, remember this is why so many of us have been battling other colds and viruses steadily (since mid September for me), because our immunity has weakened.

We need to move on, there are many other illnesses going round and when I catch it I still have to go into work, I unfortunately don't have the privilege of WFH.

So I'd like for us to keep going as we are and hopefully next year I'm back to only 1/2 colds a year (wishful thinking)
