Do you think schools will return as normal in January?

Just that really.

@MasterGland

They will be back but it will be carnage with illness and asymptomatic isolation. It is virtually impossible to do hybrid teaching. You are pinned to the front so you can be seen and heard on camera, can't do practical lessons etc. So those in the room and those at home suffer.
This with bells on.
mumsneedwine · 30/12/2021 22:53

As of today I have 24 staff with Covid who will still be off on first day of term. Have no idea how we are going to open - spent today collapsing classes. If more test positive before Tuesday we are stuffed. We also have not had our delivery of tests yet.
Going well 🤬.
So we might be open but it will be nothing like normal. I am currently teaching 122 year 11s P2 in the gym so they have a specialist teacher. Desks in hall for year 13 mocks so they will be on the floor.

MarshaBradyo · 30/12/2021 22:54

@BeardyButton

In Ireland. If they go back, it will show exactly what we think of chn.
What do you mean?

Don’t you think it’s good to go back

Workyticket · 30/12/2021 22:55

Just chatting on our group messenger (all teachers) lots have run out of LFTs and are trying to beg some from neighbours etc.

Unless lots materialise over the next couple of days they'll all be back untested.

We have a box that we'll save till the night before we go back

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 22:55

Yes I think they will but now omicron has seeded and its like the nothing before who knows what will happen by the end of January??

Pupils shut up in the cold in classrooms etc??

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 23:00

My dc school (teen) has already laid out plans if necessary to do blended learning, rota into the school which sounds sensible and perfect to me.
Schools that got on line didn't miss much of a beat and kept going.

I can't fathom how some of schools have been so good at this and others just so very bad.

Don't worry before someone jumps on me I know very well the issues some places face.
It just feels like Maddness to have made absolutely no provisions for school!.
No proper rules in place it's all sloppy guidance. It doesn't feel safe and for those reasons I think school should be staggered /blended /masks in class /uniforms dropped /wear warm clothes and move heaven and earth to Get through Jan and Feb.

Iwantthesummersun · 30/12/2021 23:00

@Explosivefarts

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that schools in Scotland will open again as normal following the Christmas holidays.
As long as there are enough staff. That is not a given and frankly there’s nothing anyone can do to open schools if too many staff are isolating/ have covid.
Theimpossiblegirl · 30/12/2021 23:01

I've got to the point where I don't want to mix at all because if I get it I'm not back for my class. That's no way to live.

siestalady · 30/12/2021 23:01

I dont understand the point about hybrid teaching though, because the only people who won't be in school are those with positive tests - ie they have covid. If they had another illness and were off for a week then presumably you wouldn't expect to teach them remotely?

firefly123 · 30/12/2021 23:02

Yes absolutely

Oh no. That sounds horrific for you and your pupils

I’ll bet my school is in a similar boat. We’ll try and open as normal but I think staff sickness is going to mean we send year groups home.

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 23:04

Oh yes it forgot about they added interest that we are still rigidly working to the symptom testing Confused, symptoms that are now largely outdated Hmm

Did anyone see the spectator article on Dr jenny harries and her monumental fuck ups so far..

blameitonthecaffeine · 30/12/2021 23:05

siestalady since Covid, they do. Now remote access to lessons is possible, parents tend to ask for it if their child is well enough to listen in.

I refuse to do this any more. I have been doing it since the start but no more. It is no way to live and I’m not putting my job before my own family any longer.
Workyticket · 30/12/2021 23:06

You wouldn't usually have such big numbers off though

Usually you'd have a full class or the odd one off because they're genuinely ill

If they're well enough to work the parents / head / government expect them to be taught.

My lessons are usually

Few mins me at the smart board
Work through a couple of examples as a class on the white board
Class do some exercises (maths)
I write a stretch and challenge question / 5 marker on the white board
I nip round and help / check / fix / question

Rinse and repeat. Can't do that for hybrid

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 23:06

Siesta who knows? They said blended learning if they have issues?
But they have been amazing, they got on line within days of the first ever lock down, they manage filming and links for pupils isolating.

MajorCarolDanvers · 30/12/2021 23:07

Yes

Thickasmincepie · 30/12/2021 23:07

Based on the local school group I'm on, not many kids will be testing. They don't test in school. So dc will get ill. Dh and me will take turns to look after them. Then I won't be teaching other kids. Then I'll catch cv, so won't be teaching even longer.

Unless the omicron symptoms are very mild or asymptomatic?

Newyearoldyou · 30/12/2021 23:16

Dd said few of her friends test at all.

TortolaParadise · 30/12/2021 23:18

Exactly that @thickasmincepie

BewareTheLibrarians · 30/12/2021 23:18

All that is based on self reporting and a very wide interpretation of what long covid actually entails. The data is a holy mess and it's not possible to take it seriously as it stands. Come back when there is actual useful data as the basis for debate.

No, this is a really ignorant view at this point. It’s clear you haven’t experienced this, which is fine, but it means you don’t have the full picture to be able to “debate” it.

Consultants know exactly what the physical effects of long covid can be. Self reported studies can be a mess BUT there is plenty of information, data and facts in the hands of the medical professionals that are treating my child and others.

Come back when you’ve learned that some things are beyond your experience or knowledge, but that doesn’t make them invalid.

WhenSheWasBad · 30/12/2021 23:19

Unless the omicron symptoms are very mild or asymptomatic

They are only mild if mild means - no need to go to the hospital. Several of my friends have Covid at the moment. All were triple jabbed and all feel rubbish. They’re not fit for work at the moment.

Mistressiggi · 30/12/2021 23:25

@kittensinthekitchen I can find nothing other than the comment about it being a priority. That is literally it.

Ah. Only in pre-covid days. School rules are that we must dial the kids in to the lesson if they have covid and are deemed well enough by parents to engage.

I don't use PowerPoints, am quite mobile throughout the room, use demos frequently, and it just doesn't work.
