Has there been any whispers about post mew year restrictions?

In England!

It's my sons birthday on Friday next week and I literally have no idea whether he'll be in or out of school, able to have a friend round or if we can go anywhere 🙈

Just wondered if any things have been leaked etc?

Sorry if this has been covered, I don't have time to scan the page thoroughly!

I'm wondering the same. Party planned for my sons 6th birthday on 15th Jan.
40 kids attending.
Will be gutted for him if it doesn't go ahead!
The only reap whispers I've heard are potentially the rule of 6 indoors, alternatively 3 households. Either way that will scupper our plans so I'm keeping everything crossed!

Wednesdayafternoon · 30/12/2021 10:13

It's so awkward isn't it! Because these poor January babies can't really rely on the good weather for outdoor fun either!

I haven't planned a party as such as he's only in reception, but I was hoping could have a tea party with cousins etc who go to school with him and would be in our "childcare bubble" if all that nonsense returned anyway!!!

DS is 11 today we've not been able to planmuch of anything. It's already a rubbish time of year for a birthday but Covid has ruined a second one for him now. Trying to stay cheery for his sake but feel so so sad for him Sad.

VikingOnTheFridge · 30/12/2021 10:21

Nothing that I've heard yet. Usually the right wing papers know first, eyes on them.

Wednesdayafternoon · 30/12/2021 10:23

@MumbleCrumbs I feel exactly the same. DS will be 5 and he's so excited for his birthday and taking his cakes into school. Peolel say "make it special at home".... but I just feel sad about it all and we've exhausted home fun 🙈

I haven't heard anything either.... hoping it's not a last minute thing like last year though but I'm sure they started rumours about it all by now last year!

I actually think we'll be OK.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 30/12/2021 10:25

Mew year? Hopefully it wil be raining delicious dkittens and we all get one!!

the80sweregreat · 30/12/2021 10:26

The right wing press have probably been told not to say anything much about restrictions or whatever until after Sunday or Monday.
The news about the new eight nightingale hubs has unsettled me more this morning, although it is a precautionary measure ? How will they be staffed ?

Barbie222 · 30/12/2021 10:27

I think because the new centres are being built on hospital grounds this time there will be the staff to run them.

Gechik · 30/12/2021 10:29

The 8 new hubs are overflow for those getting better before they leave hospital, it just said on BBC news, not for those going out feet first.

ShepherdMoons · 30/12/2021 10:30

This is what I am also concerned about. Nightingale hospitals when we can't even staff our current NHS hospitals? I have no idea why the government would think this is a good idea, unless they are planning to do some major recruitment in the New Year.

With so many cases everyday I really think there needs to be a clear plan for January and February. There needs to be some sort of action soon as currently there aren't even enough test kits for essential workers.

Sparklfairy · 30/12/2021 10:31

Sky news says they're deciding between 2 weeks and 2 months. So march! Can someone get the link, my phone is ringing Grin

MarshaBradyo · 30/12/2021 10:31

We had uncertainty for dd’s party

We invited people anyway and would have adapted, it’s ok though which I’m relieved about

MumbleCrumbs · 30/12/2021 10:32

I think it's nuts that headlines about enjoying New Year parties are on the same papers talking about hospitals setting up wards in car park and mortuary capacity being increased. Whole thing feels crazy.

the80sweregreat · 30/12/2021 10:36

I read an article last week online about the boosters for the over 60s demographic starting to wear off , then the news this morning about the new hubs!
I know it's a precautionary measure and the boosters do provide some protection, but five million are still unvaccinated too.
Although amongst my friends the ones not vaccinated seem to be fairing better than the ones having all the jabs who seem to be getting really poorly.
Mixed picture all round.

It unnerved me! It wasn't even the lead story ( that was about Maxwell ) Who knows ?
scaevola · 30/12/2021 10:38

@Gechik

It sounds like they are going to be holding pens for those who cannot safely be discharged home, but who do not require treatment in acute wards. AKA bedblockers

We have a huge social care crisis at the moment, and being unable to safely discharge patients is clogging NHS (if you limit discharge, then beds will fill and admissions have to be limited - this applies whatever the capacity within).

So as you cannot always discharge those who may still be infectious (whether they were in for covid, or something else, or caught it in the hospital) you need somewhere to put them. Ditto those who might be perfectly safe from infection POV, but who are awaiting care packages or other interventions.

It's a completely different concept from the original Nightingales which were going to be treatment centres for those at the height of the disease, and which therefore needed considerably more extensive staffing

madisonbridges · 30/12/2021 10:38

BJ's message at the moment is get a booster. He's saying that the vast majority of people who are in icu and who are dying are unvaccinated or without a booster. He's said he's not making any decisions until they've got more data. The scientists are saying they need to see the data that's been delayed from the Christmas period. So I don't think he's made a decision and is just holding it back. They genuinely still don't know. Any whispers would be pure speculation.

the80sweregreat · 30/12/2021 10:48

The right wing press in general are really anti any more restrictions at all , every article or opinion piece they put online is ' got to live with it ' Boris Johnson is holding his nerve etc etc yet the rolling news is much more precautionary.
It's all mixed messaging again.
Most people seem to believe the Mail journalists ( or quote them !)
Don't know what to think.

Exactly this.
Enjoy your parties on the one hand... extra hospital space being made available ready for a surge on the other 🤦‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 30/12/2021 10:51

Scaevola makes sense

the80sweregreat · 30/12/2021 10:57

The news should make it clear that the new hubs is about the capacity to discharge the people out of hospital and why they are needed. I'm drawing my own conclusions that the boosters are wearing off a lot and the hospitals are expecting a huge surge in cases that do need to be treated in hospital! One expert today on bbc news stopped short of saying this today, but he hinted at it.
Or maybe I'm just worrying too much.

MumbleCrumbs · 30/12/2021 10:58

A cynical part of me wonders if they're deliberately waiting until after new year to use further restrictions to deflect the inevitable Brexit shitstorm that's about to hit Hmm.

Stephthegreat · 30/12/2021 11:00

Boris won’t be voted in again. Diabolical leadership, people need clarity.

CorsicaDreaming · 30/12/2021 12:24

I agree - according to this BBC article the numbers in hospital have increased by 2000 more people in 2 days. If this becomes 2000 more in hospital every two days it would be completely unsustainable in such a short time frame it's scary.

I appreciate the figures are likely all over the place for the Christmas period, but even if that is just in the right ballpark they should be bringing in restrictions now. It's playing party politics with people's lives at the moment, and the longer the government leaves it the longer we will end up with severe restrictions.

You can have as many buildings as you want, but without trained doctors and nurses to staff at that level, they are just that - buildings. And they don't have the staff.

I think the govt are being criminally negligent now in doing nothing and I hope they will be called to proper account for this.
