Has there been any whispers about post mew year restrictions?

In England!

It's my sons birthday on Friday next week and I literally have no idea whether he'll be in or out of school, able to have a friend round or if we can go anywhere 🙈

Just wondered if any things have been leaked etc?

Sorry if this has been covered, I don't have time to scan the page thoroughly!

To be fair, some people on mumsnet are in the know

They really arent , they make guesses based on what they have read which could turn out to be right.

Many were telling us we would be locked down for Christmas.

That's where it might get interesting. Kids start going back to school from Tuesday. In theory high school kids should be doing return to school lateral flows. There are no lateral flows available.

Most schools ordered enough test kits for this in December (even though only given about 48 hrs to do so).

Hospitals have to do their best to prepare for January. Our trust sent staff a doomsday email with contingency plans weeks ago. I don't think there is any link to what the government intend to do. Except that the less restrictions the government put in, the more hospitals have to plan.

I'll be well and truly fucked off if they prioritise people spending at Christmas and new year over schools returning.

GoodnightGrandma · 30/12/2021 15:21

My DD’s school had them delivered before they broke up.

the80sweregreat · 30/12/2021 15:22

A few are ' in the know' !!
Not many I admit , but occasionally I've read posts that are informative etc
It is rare though

GoodnightGrandma · 30/12/2021 15:23

I work for the NHS and I’ve not been told anything. We will adapt as necessary.

To be fair, some people on mumsnet are in the know , but it is hard to find amongst the whole ' someone I met at a bus stop ' type speculation and I've heard a few conspiracy theories at the bus stops too!
They really, really aren’t. 😂
curlymom · 30/12/2021 15:28

Honestly just wait and see like the rest of us. A children’s birthday party is not the most important thing in the world. So tired of the same post reworded every day

the80sweregreat · 30/12/2021 15:30

Oh well . I'm obviously very naive!!
😂
I love to think that some of the HCP's that write on here are not fake though

Yes, like the poster who "knows someone in Government" and said we would be locked down on 27th December.

I only believe it when I see it.

CovidCorvid · 30/12/2021 15:33

@Barbie222

I think because the new centres are being built on hospital grounds this time there will be the staff to run them.
Ha ha ha. There aren’t enough staff to run the hospitals currently!
Againstmachine · 30/12/2021 15:37

They wouldnt tell the NHS in advance, there are 1.2-1.5 million people work for them, you may as well put it on front page of a newspaper.

Whichjab · 30/12/2021 15:41

Schools are not going to close. No need for all the hysteria.

No one knows, people were screaming this time last year that schools wouldn't close again.... I agree it's unlikely but surely you must be aware that anything is possible.

What is interesting is how few European countries are going for full lockdown this time, france had 200,000 cases yesterday more than us! Yes they have shit nightclubs and obviously have their health pass (but that has been in place since before omicron and hasn’t stopped the rise) yet no lockdown. Otherwise Netherlands and Denmark have locked down in a more traditional sense but Italy hasn’t Spain hasn’t! It makes me think this must be milder or there is skepticism that a lockdown would achieve much in the face if such a transmissible variant. It’s not just boris who is t putting us in los known indefinitely why the change in heart from other European leaders too?

the80sweregreat · 30/12/2021 16:07

Yes, France are doing badly , but they are not in lockdown , which did surprise me to be honest

I don't think Denmark is in lockdown, is it?

But I agree on your main points. Most European countries have resisted taking lockdowns despite rapidly rising rates. On MN, you'd think England was the exception, and while rules may be laxer than elsewhere, it's not all that different.

I guess it's a combination of Omnicron being milder and so transmissible that nothing short of full lockdown will help, the lack of political and popular will, and the money simply not being there. That could change, of course, but it does seem that governments are realising that there's little choice but to 'ride the Omnicron' wave.

Given the situation with lack of testing available, particularly lateral flow tests for secondary schools, would it not be sensible to at least delay the spring term for a week or two whilst stocks of these tests can be replenished. Surely better that than to allow the snowball to keep running down the hill, if the shit does hit the fan with schools and staffing levels surely that will cause far more disruption to education.
What is sensible and what is politically viable are not necessarily the same thing.

I read earlier France have shut out brits from driving through due to covid cases.

And they are fairing worse than us!

It's just an excuse because they hate us and brexit gave them the opportunity.

Pretty cheap shot in a pandemic and problematic from those who want to return from EU countries to the uk after spending their winter there?

I wouldn’t delay no. There’s always an easy reason to keep dc out and extended. It shouldn’t be used though, even for a week or two.
gorseinon · 30/12/2021 17:29

I have not seen anything leaked, which I have to say is unusual.

Nope, nothing at all online Makes me think that nothing will happen till next week ( if at all )
nattiee · 30/12/2021 17:32

My little boy is 2 on January 24th and I haven't planned anything yet as I don't know what restrictions could be in place. I shall see after the new year. It sucks though as I feel he has missed out esp as his first birthday was in lockdown but luckily he isn't of an age to remember

StealthPolarBear · 30/12/2021 17:33

@the80sweregreat

The right wing press have probably been told not to say anything much about restrictions or whatever until after Sunday or Monday. The news about the new eight nightingale hubs has unsettled me more this morning, although it is a precautionary measure ? How will they be staffed ?
They need staff? My goodness who would have thought.

And there's no way people would believe it'd only be one or two weeks.

That's where it might get interesting. Kids start going back to school from Tuesday. In theory high school kids should be doing return to school lateral flows. There are no lateral flows available.

Most schools ordered enough test kits for this in December (even though only given about 48 hrs to do so).

Most schools... so not all high schools?

And that still begs a question for primaries. I know the advice isn't for primaries school age kids to do regular lft, but we were being told to lateral flow ALL primary kids daily at our school in the week before the holidays by Public Health England due to a large outbreak.

The school definitely aren't going to be supplying us come next week. So even if high school have got that base covered, primaries sure as hell haven't.

So even if the High Schools are sorted great. Primaries still will be an issue...

The last couple of weeks of term were bloody awful.
