Has anyone else got a really horrible bitter taste? Just tried to have a cuppa and it was so vile!

Have you got covid or recovering from it?

I had covid in Oct2020, lost my taste completely. Since it came back I get horrible tastes and smells, not all the time thankfully, but randomly. Things will smell like gas, mould, rubbish, burnt etc. Things will taste bitter, like mould, like sick, like the bin, like sewage. It's worse right now (I have cold/flu/covid symptoms again), it's called parosmia.

I wish I knew of something to tell you that would help ease it!

evenflo3 · 29/12/2021 16:00

Sorry yes was a bit low on detail - I currently have covid.

Try to eat and drink plain tasting things for the time being I think, and then hopefully its less likely to be a horrible taste?

Atmywitsend29 · 29/12/2021 16:03

I hope you feel better soon Flowers

DolphinFC · 29/12/2021 16:22

I've lost all taste and started listening to Michael Bolton CDs.Sad

evenflo3 · 29/12/2021 16:39

@DolphinFC - my thoughts are with you, I hope you pull through as that sounds awful Wink

@Atmywitsend29 thank you! I think this version of covid is hitting me hard and fast so hoping for quick recovery. I had covid in 2019 complete with long covid, this feels very different.

Yes when I had Covid a month back, most things I couldn’t taste at all but tea and coffee tasted vile; bitter and almost like tar. I assumed it was the caffeine

I'm trying to stay strong but tell me...

... how am I supposed to live without you?
Now that I've been loving you so long
How am I supposed to live without you am I supposed to live without you?
Now that I've been loving you so long
How am I supposed to live without you

@DolphinFC - since reading your message I have had this song stuck in my head... maybe this symptom is contagious! Shock

I'm the same op, it's horrible. Today is day 5 since I tested positive.

My 18 year old ds has been suffering with parosmia for nearly 3 months, feel so sorry for him as his favourite foods taste like mud.

Lemons1571 · 30/12/2021 09:04

@evenflo3 I had this last week on days 2-3. Coffee was the worst - like metallic muddy water. It lessened off the next day and is nearly back to normal now.

Itonlytakesonetree · 30/12/2021 09:08

Oh I am so pleased it's not just me!! I know loss of taste and smell is a thing obviously, but I get an overwhelming smell of vomit when I eat, which is just awful.

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 30/12/2021 09:10

yes I'm on day 4 now I think and my mouth tastes horrible, like morning breath but all day Shock

Brushing my teeth lots, drinking squash as water tastes horrible and giving lots of mints

TenLittleDinos · 30/12/2021 09:11

Yes, I had covid over Christmas (day 11 since testing positive now) and I still have the awful bitter taste in my mouth. I didn’t lose my sense of smell or taste at all, I just have this residual bitter taste.

onedayoranother · 30/12/2021 09:25

I recently found out my sister, who had Covid February 2020, never regained her sense of smell or taste (hyposmia). She's been to a specialist and there's no cure and seems to be permanent. She loves to cook too. Does parosmia go away?

Spacemonkey2016 · 30/12/2021 09:38

My mouth tasted overwhelmingly very chemically the day before I lost my sense of taste and smell.

Straycats · 30/12/2021 09:45

Coffee tasted vile, tomato soup utterly tasteless almost as if someone had thrown in handful of flour-yeuck and our special night of pizza, it was so salty, found many things more salty, didn't like anything sweet particularly. Lasted a few days and thankfully back to normal.

Bewildered2021 · 30/12/2021 09:48

Yes I’m on day 9 everything tastes disgusting!

Babdoc · 30/12/2021 09:54

I had Covid in the first wave back in March 2020. Most food tasted of chemical disinfectant, apart from chilli con carne, which tasted of revoltingly strong cheap perfume!
Fortunately, my taste had reverted to normal by the time I was hospitalised.

evenflo3 · 30/12/2021 10:31

Thankfully the vile taste is decreasing, I just had a brew and it was a solid 6/10.

I worked out that the taste / smell is like the smell of water that's been in a flower vase too long....

I had it and it lasted a couple of weeks. I did the burnt orange trick which slightly worked, didn’t work at all for DH though.

Dilbertian · 30/12/2021 10:40

I have to disagree. Find things you do enjoy, consume them with pleasure, and try other things as well. I think you've got to keep your taste buds stimulated. Your body rarity builds things it doesn't need (like breastmilk, or muscle if you don't exercise). You've got to stimulate it to help restore your senses of taste and smell.

All my tea taste of unclean water these days. I find I'm enjoying drinking hot Marmite instead, which I would never have touched before Covid!

Dilbertian · 30/12/2021 10:43

I can taste some things, many much more weakly than before. Some things I cannot taste at all, and my sense of bitterness has become disgustingly enhanced. Do you have my sympathies!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 30/12/2021 10:45

DD had Covid in September and whilst her sense of taste only went for two days she still complains of a funny taste everytime she eats something. She describes it as being smokey and in her nose but it only happens when she eats.
