9yr old really unwell

Lndnmummy · 29/12/2021 10:03

My 9 year old has a sky high temperature and is really unwell. We are all positive but my husband and I have relatively mild symptoms. Worried about DS1. Doing lots of rest, fluids and calpol. Any other tips?

Also make sure you shake the calpol bottle really well before administering.

DoTheyKnowItsLemonJuice · 29/12/2021 21:27

Just sending you good thoughts op. Bet it will really help to give the extra Calpol now that you’ve realised. Hoping you all have a better night Flowers

oatmilk4breakfast · 29/12/2021 21:36

It’s so worrying when your child is so ill. You’re doing the best you can. Hope he has a good night.

umpahlumpahstickitupyourjumpah · 29/12/2021 21:37

Sending wishes for your family's good health tonight. We also have a really tall son and once we started going by weight and not age, calpol became MUCH more useful!

I know they're not so widely used in the UK but ibuprofen suppositories could be a maybe if your son can't keep the liquid down? If you end up speaking to a GP (hopefully you won't need to) it might be worth asking for a prescription?

Best of luck, wishing you a peaceful night and a brighter morning.

ImAnOmelette · 29/12/2021 21:41

I've used paracetamol suppositories for my DS. Much easier. Especially when they're vomiting.

Do you want to post his height and weight so someone else can double check dosages of paracetamol and ibuprofen?

ImAnOmelette · 29/12/2021 21:43

Hope his fever breaks soon xxx

MerryBumpmas · 29/12/2021 21:45

My baby was really poorly with it for 8 days. I also thought ‘children got it mildly’ - what a myth.
I hope your son feels a little better tomorrow Flowers

Mulhollandmagoo · 29/12/2021 22:18

Bless you all, sounds like you're really going through it Flowers It's really natural to be anxious, it's a biological response to your child being poorly, calpol and lots of rest and fluids for your little boy, and make sure you and your husband are looking after yourselves too - me and my husband absolutely swore by the Lemsip max all in one liquid when we had covid if you have any or anyone can get some to you? Hopefully you'll all be back on the mend very soon Smile

Sunshinegirl82 · 29/12/2021 23:01

I hope your DS starts to feel better soon. Just thought I'd flag these ibuprofen chewable tablets for children, just in case they are useful!

Calpol also do a 6+ meltlet thing that dissolves in the mouth.

My son used to have these but they taste quite "spicy" - I tried one to check and they've definitely got a kick! Might not go down so well if feeling nauseous already. Handy to know though for older kids.
Lndnmummy · 30/12/2021 00:01

Thanks again everyone, lovely people. He is asleep, window slightly open. His breathing sounds calmer and less strained and he has managed to keep the calpol down (and the right dose!). At the very least he is asleep and getting some respite from it all.
A question, if he had to go to A&E and both of his parents are positive, who can go with him? Could we still come with him? Silly question perhaps but I couldn't leave him. Hoping it doesn't come to that of course but my mind is racing. His face looks more peaceful now🙏.

@BabyOctopus thank you so much, you raised a very important point (for anyone else reading). I went through the meningitis checklist on the 111 call (and I think we are ok). I say this because my son was treated for viral meningitis when he was 4 (admitted to hospital for a week or so). It was similar to now in a way in that he is so unwell but still differenf. Another poster upread also made me realise that he does tend to vomit when his fever is reallt high and has done since he was a baby. I only just realised this now and it was very helpful as it changed how I was viewing things. Earlier today I was worried about aggrevating the nausea but in the evening I have focussed on getting the fever done so cold flannel, strip bed, fresh air in, calpol to stay down, wet flannel etc (all from the helpful tips here) and it seems it has at least given him some respite. He is so beautiful, life loving and joyous and so to see him so ill is really unusual. He is so kind. He lost one of his teeth the other day and as his little brother who is only 3 had just read about the tooth fairy ds 1 gave him his tooth so that "he could experience the tooth fairy for the first time". He is just ace.

Hi,

Glad your DS is sleeping soundly, yes should he need to go to A&E one of you will be able to be with him. My friend found herself in this position a few weeks ago, and she stayed in a side room with her son.

Sending healing vibes xx

Chocciebiscuit · 30/12/2021 04:01

Glad he is getting some respite and is asleep for a bit. He sounds like an adorable boy. Hope you all feel better soon. You are a lovely Caring Mum, Take Care.

countrygirl99 · 30/12/2021 06:08

Flat coca cola is a good substitute for dioralite and easier to get a child to drink. Needs to be normal not diet.

Snowraingain · 30/12/2021 06:14

Oh bless you. What a rotten time. I hope he had a better night.
I was just remembering when my now 15 dd had pneumonia when she was little. Absolute misery.
Lucozade Sport is really good as well also white rice with a little butter once he can eat a bit.
Sending you love I’m so sorry you’re all going through this.

gofg · 30/12/2021 06:21

I hope your DS is soon feeling better OP.

SpringRainbow · 30/12/2021 06:22

My youngest is just getting over a really bad fever that lasted a few days. Multiple covid test (LFT & PCR, including a test at hospital) have come back negative.

However, it started getting very worrying when they struggled to even keep down water and just slept all the time.

We have gone through so many ice lollys as they were the only way we could get fluids into them.

We are not sure what was wrong, the hospital just said ‘viral infection’. They can’t give us any more details.

We are home now but it has been such a stressful time.

I hope your son feels better soon.

Lovemylittlebear · 30/12/2021 06:34

I really hope that he is better soon :( no advice on current situation but in general vitamin d for kids, vitamin c and zinc are thought to be helpful. I have been keeping my three topped up on this and giving a bit more at present as we currently all have Covid. I think there are some medical conditions or medications where the supplements are not recommended. Really hoping he is better soon and if you are worried just trust your maternal instincts and get him seen by a medical professional xx

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 30/12/2021 13:26

@Lndnmummy

How’s your son today?

Lndnmummy · 30/12/2021 23:16

@OnceuponaRainbow18 he is still poorly but much more managable. Managed to eat and drink today and kept paracetamol down with no issues. Such a relief. My own temperature is spiking this evening so thank goodness he is better. God works in great ways. Thank you so much everyone for your handholds, time and advice.

Glad he seems a little better.

Remember mild illness is medical speak for not hospitalised... It can still be very nasty.

CarbonelCat · 30/12/2021 23:23

Pleased to hear he's improving! Sorry you're not so well, be kind to yourself too.

Thehop · 30/12/2021 23:24

You could add diaoralyte to lollies with the ribena @Lndnmummy? Works with mine when dehydrated and hot
