9yr old really unwell

Lndnmummy · 29/12/2021 10:03

My 9 year old has a sky high temperature and is really unwell. We are all positive but my husband and I have relatively mild symptoms. Worried about DS1. Doing lots of rest, fluids and calpol. Any other tips?

You need to administer ibuprofen and paracetamol together to bring down a really high temp. It really works. Once you’ve done the first dose of both together continue to give each drug as required but according to their individual dosing schedules.

whittingtonmum · 29/12/2021 10:13

If you're worried you need to ring your GP. Failing that 111.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 29/12/2021 10:14

What day are you on? Dd3 is 10 and she was the most ill in this house. Dd1 is 13 and had one vaccine so I’m assuming that’s the difference. Dd1 had a headache for 24 hours and that was it. Dd3 was ill until end of day 7. Fluids and pain relief is all you can do. Unless oxygen levels drop - call an ambulance for that.

Covidworries · 29/12/2021 10:24

Do you have an o2 finger reader? If so check readings. If not can you get someone to drop one off or order off amazon for next day delivery.

If in doubt ring 111 for advise

guiltynetter · 29/12/2021 10:31

In what other ways is he really unwell other than a high temperature? Is he short of breath, any rashes? Still passing urine? I would ring 111 for advice and definitely give Ibruprofen for temp, calpol alone doesn't work sometimes.

Thank you so much you lovely lot. He is really teary and emotional. Vomitting and head ache. I think he is very anxious. My dh has gone to lie down with him in a dark room to try and sooth him. He can't tolerate ibuprohen, it comes straight back up. He is dehydrated for sure, I'm working on it. I've ordered the o2 monitor. Spoke to 111 they said to "keep an eye".Thank you so much all.

Try ice lollies for dehydration

theneverendinglaundry · 29/12/2021 16:04

OP I hope he is okay. It's such a worry isn't it.

I have been so level headed about covid but as soon as my DC got it last week I was worrying about her and checking on her through the night. She was very poorly for 2 days but turned a corner after that.

I hope he feels better soon.

Lndnmummy · 29/12/2021 17:35

Thanks everyone. Ice lollies are a great idea. I have some molds somewhere so will make them with Ribena. And yes @theneverendinglaundry I have been so pragmatic, even with my MIL in hospital last year. I just worry as he seems so fragile which isn't like him. He has asthma as well. We are keeping a close eye and hoping he'll bounce back soon.

When my youngest wouldn't tolerate fluids. I sat and used a 5ml syringe and slowly worked my way through a cup of squash. A nurse told me it was a good way to do it and unlikely to be brought right back up.

Sweetnhappy1 · 29/12/2021 17:47

Jelly is another good way to get fluid in. 5ml of squash every few minutes and ice lollies are excellent suggestions. If things don't improve, call 111 again and they'll arrange for him to be seen.

Ice lollies. Work every time for my dd. That and calpol. I do rotate with ibuprofen but if he can't tolerate that just stick with the calpol. Let him sleep. Chicken noodle soup.
neveradullmoment99 · 29/12/2021 18:02

My dd had chicken noodles soup when she could tolerate it and was on the mend a few days later. I really think it totally helps.

neveradullmoment99 · 29/12/2021 18:04

My dd was so unwell, I never have seen her like that. Not since she was a baby. All she wanted to do was sleep.
It wasnt covid but some other hiddeous virus with all the same symptoms.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 29/12/2021 18:06

Is your son black? Sorry I think I recognise your name from the black mumsnet section! Lots of kids I know who are black seem to feel worse with covid than their white peers.

Glad you called 111 and got some professional advice. Hope he feels better soon

Lndnmummy · 29/12/2021 18:49

@OnceuponaRainbow18. Hey there, thank you so much for reaching out. Yes he isFlowers and yes its me from the other posts.

Keep us updated x

Yes ice lollies are a great idea. I always resort to fruit shoots when my youngest is ill, she drinks them without fail!

Lndnmummy · 29/12/2021 18:53

Ugh its awful. Dh and I will take one child each tonight so we can keep an eye on them. The little one seems okish so far. I am worried about dh too. He is also asthmatic and has autoimmune disease. I got pericarditis from my booster so feel like we have really been through it lately. Sorry for venting, just feeling really anxious.

TabithaTittlemouse · 29/12/2021 18:53

Ice cubes always encourage my dc to have fluids.

Hope he feels better soon.

TabithaTittlemouse · 29/12/2021 18:58

@Lndnmummy it sounds super stressful. I think anyone would be anxious.

TheSweetestHalleluja · 29/12/2021 19:00

Hope you're all feeling better soon OP.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 29/12/2021 19:02

Great idea about the sleep, try and get some sleep yourself though as well so you help your body recover as well, lots of rest and fluid. Hopefully your oximeter will arrive tomo so you can check all your O2 levels, don’t feel bad if you feel you should call 111 again, you could even try and get a GP phone appointment tomo. If you’re super worried don’t be afraid to try and push to get your son seen in person by a doc.

Babyfairy0923 · 29/12/2021 19:03

Hope he feels better soon ☹️
Lollies are an excellent idea!

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 29/12/2021 19:03

How stressful OP. I hope you're all feeling better really soon. My mum always used to make Ribena ice lollies when I was poorly, they are wonderful.

ewchoc · 29/12/2021 19:07

Sympathies OP. Me, DH, DD and DS all recently has covid and were all very ill (fever, vomiting, cough, pains, very tired etc). I was the same as you, very worried about the children as everything I had heard was that children get it mildly and mine didn't! DH is also immunocompromised so I was worried about him. It was a scary week or two. I just wanted to give you some reassurance though, because we all got through it and we're recovered now. Definitely keep up with calpol and fluids, lots of rest and reassurance that the symptoms are common and should pass in time. Be kind to yourself and try not to fear the worst. An oximeter is a good idea and of course get help from GP/111 if you feel he needs it.
