Lost Taste and Smell again

I tested positive at the end of October so approx 8 weeks ago. Main symptoms were headaches and nausea and lost 90% sense of taste and 100% sense of smell for around 2-3 days then all came back fully 😊 With hindsight I was lucky and not very illwith it.

Fast forward to Christmas Day and I developed a really, really heavy cold. Despite knowing you’re not supposed to test until 90 days are up I have been the last 3 days anyway as a lot of family around. All negative. Today I have 100% lost both senses. This has never happened when I’ve had a cold before (sense of taste goes a bit but not completely).

Has this happened to anyone else? Should I now get ANOTHER PCR 🙄 despite having it 8 weeks ago and being triple vaccinated? Thanks.

Yes, you need to get a PCR when you have new symptoms, and loss of taste/smell is a symptom to test for.

If you haven't had omicron before (and hadn't arrived here in October) then yes you can get it despite previous infections with earlier variants. About 25% of triple vaccinated remain vulnerable too.

You def can have it again but I’m not sure a pcr would be helpful as positive from the first time could still come up. And you wouldn’t know for sure if you actually have it again or not.

You do need another PCR. The guidelines state you shouldn’t do another PCR within 90 unless you have new symptoms - see attached. You have new symptoms, one of the big 3 as well..

You are unfortunately just as likely to get Omicron as you’d have had Delta in October. But your booster should help.. hopefully it’s just your heavy cold 🙏🏼

Thanks all. That was my gut that I should do that anyway. I was more interested in if anyone else has had the same situation with losing senses with just a cold as I still think that is far more likely than covid. Tested negative again on LFT this mornjng and can’t get a PCR 😩

I mean it might have been a good idea to get a pcr but it's pretty common to lose smell and taste with a cold! People talk about it like it's a new thing but I've been losing smell and taste with an average cold for years. I lost my taste with a throat infection last year too (pcr negative). Covid isn't the only thing to cause smell and taste disturbances!
