My almost 80 year old amazingly fit and healthy DM tested positive on LF today. She currently well and only has symptoms of a head cold. Really mild symptoms so I'm presuming she has the Omicron variant (her contact has the same symptoms-head cold for 2 or 3 days and fine now). She is triple vaccinated and her only other medical condition is rheumatoid arthritis but she's not on any immunosuppressant drugs. I'm really sick with worry due to her age. Please help me sleep tonight telling me some stories of elderly relatives that have had Omicron and are fine with it.

Just to help ease your worries. My 96 grandad had it in October. Passed it on to parents (dad 70, mum 68). Dad and grandad breezed through with just headaches, sadly mum needed hospitalising & on O2 for 11days and took a month to recover, but is fine now.

Hope she pulls through soon

MrMistoffee · 29/12/2021 15:34

My 92 year old grandma has had it twice. She wasn't even poorly with it either time.

My friend’s 90 and 85 yo parents (and all their bridge friends so approx 15 people over 80) caught covid 2 weeks ago. Nobody even had any symptoms - they only tested because one of their daughters was pregnant and they wanted to be safe. So the positive test prompted them to contact each other and get tested. None of them EVER had any symptoms.
countrygirl99 · 29/12/2021 15:39

83yo CEV FIL had a positive LFT just before Christmas, confirmed by PCR. Didn't even have a slight colld, only tests twice a week because they have carers coming in for CEV MIL who hasn't caught it at all. Neither have had their boosters yet as MIL is housebound and FIL is too busy fretting that she hasn't had it to sort himself out.

Mischance · 29/12/2021 15:44

I have several elderly friends who have had it and did not get seriously ill - but they were all triple jabbed. So glad that your Mum is too. Hopefully that will see her through with no major problems.

imstilljenny2 · 29/12/2021 15:46

@countrygirl99 that's brilliant he doesn't have even cold symptoms considering he is only double jabbed. Thank goodness

My 89 year old nan was having radiotherapy and was hospitalised with the side effects of it (unable to eat). She caught covid in the hospital. Was totally asymptomatic. Last Nov so pre-vaccines. The vast majority will be fine even taking age into account.

shouldistop · 29/12/2021 19:12

I know of an 86 year old pre vaccines that had completely asymptomatic Covid. She was tested for release into a care home.
Remember that for the vast majority of people Covid is a mild illness with around a third suffering no symptoms at all.

chillichoclove · 29/12/2021 19:44

Even before vaccines 85% of that age group experienced mild-mod disease.

Fallagain · 29/12/2021 19:52

My friend’s Grandmother in her early 90s tested positive when they started testing people in care homes during the first lockdown. She didn’t develop a single symptom.

Lndnmummy · 29/12/2021 19:56

My 80 year old MIL was hospitalised last November. She was frail and with several complex health issues. Was on oxygen. She is still here, strong as an ox. Love her to bits. Praying for your mum.❤️

absolutelyknackeredcow · 29/12/2021 20:03

My step mother - 80 also overweight and struggles with her breathing normally.
Currently has Covid - triple vac
' a bit of a tickle ' in her throat. Absolutely fine not even ill

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/12/2021 20:05

I work in a care home and all the residents who had covid. They only had a cough and sore throat, all fine now.

ifonly4 · 29/12/2021 20:07

My 86 Uncle caught it last xmas. He was unvaccinated as they wouldn't jab him at appointment, due the fact he was still struggling after pneumonia. He had TB when young, on top of which part of his lung was removed three years ago due to lung cancer. Recovery did take a while as he had to learn to breath in a different way after cancer,/hadn't been well recently, but he's still with us and now fully jabbed.

mobear · 29/12/2021 20:20

My (then) 96 year old grandmother got Covid-19 during the first wave, before the vaccines were available. She was fine, she got a little dehydrated but that was all. Wishing your mum a speedy recovery x

Changeissometimesgood · 29/12/2021 20:29

Thank you so much for starting this thread! I worry so much about DM 77 getting Covid. It’s so good to hear positive stories. She did have a runny nose and a bit of a cough a couple of weeks ago, enough to order antibiotics (she has copd) but didn’t end up taking them. I really hope she had it then with no issues, but we’ll never know.

I hope your DM sails through this. Flowers

imstilljenny2 · 29/12/2021 21:01

Thanks all. I'm still completely stressed by most of our family testing positive over Christmas but with each passing day I'm feeling a bit calmer.

Also grateful for this thread. I tested positive on 27th while my elderly parents were still staying with us after Xmas. I literally felt sick and they rushed home in a panic. So far so good though and no symptoms but so good to hear that even if they do catch it from me they should be ok.

@Cherrypie32 my DH also tested positive on 27th and we've been round my mom a lot, she slept here Xmas eve so very close contact! She's 68 but has heart problems and asthma, however she is triple jabbed. But it's still a worry isn't it 😕
ShinyGreenElephant · 29/12/2021 21:46

My grandad had it at 89 (original variant). He was fine, spent 2 days in bed then was ok after that. I'm a fit and healthy 35 and I was much, much worse! Hope your mum is ok

SleepWhenAmDead · 29/12/2021 21:50

My Dad aged 80 with numerous health problems including renal failure had it about a year ago just before he was offered the jab (which he then couldn't have as you have to wait after testing positive). He was very poorly at home and off his feet for a week. On one day, I was so worried I called a doctor, but he didn't need to go in. He recovered to his previous state of health. I hope your mum feels well soon.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 29/12/2021 21:54

No aged relatives to worry about now sadly but years ago my 80 yo great uncle was trampled in his byer by his beloved cows who broke both his legs.. He was back on his feet - literally - in less than 3 months. The oldies can be the most hardy!!
Rooting for your dm op..

TheKeatingFive · 29/12/2021 22:02

I know of a 99 year old who sailed through it pre-vaccine. She was only mildly ill for a few days.

MissMaple82 · 29/12/2021 22:29

My friend works in a nursing home and she has told me many 90 odd year olds survived the first covid. If she's fit and healthy, I'm sure she'll be fine. Understandably an anxious time mind, but I personally think that's down to propaganda
