Feeling really uneasy on DS 12 returning to school , Just feel this omicron is going to rip through and although I’m told it’s mild 2 people currently with covid are vomiting, stomach pain and feeling dreadful , barely moving out of bed. I’m thinking it’s probably omicron they’ve got .
I feel with out the vaccine I’m sending him in with no protection. Not feeling 100% on the jab but don’t want the risk of long covid and he really seems to suffer quite badly with illness . He had it in October was quite poorly with it , can’t get jab till end of jan . Was poorly 2 weeks ago with headache and temp for four days then cough lft negative . Just don’t want another 8/10 days of omicron . It’s being described as highly contagious so very likely to be in school again in jan .

Are parents going to lft kids twice a week (if test-kit available as I can’t get hold of any at moment) ? Not heard about masks yet , but they were only needed in corridors not in class .

Was hoping if you had delta maybe that would protect you for a bit, if he had antibodies but I’ve read delta gives you no protection from omicron.

Really don’t want schools shut again and so vital for his mental health to be with his peers as well as education.

Thanks @Peevedcolleague
We have skiing booked with the In law family in feb half term which we’ll now probably need to cancel as it will be too difficult with a single doses teen.
Not the end of the world obviously but it’s always when we celebrate Christmas with my partners family. Everyone will be gutted (Christmas was cancel due to covid so they were looking forward to this so much)

That is mild - the definition is that the person does not require hospital admission. It doesn't mean that's trivial and barely symptomatic

It'll be interesting to see if the level of vaccination amongst teens (most offered two, not three shots) makes a difference to the numbers off sick/isolating in secondary schools. Because the circulation of omicron highest in the u20s, isn't it

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 29/12/2021 08:13

Mild yes, Andrew marr was lamenting his mild infection.

Fritilleries · 29/12/2021 09:09

A moment of consideration for the teachers having to juggle school teaching with uploading and marking dozens of assignments. Smile

RosieLemonade · 29/12/2021 09:14

@neveradullmoment99 we have had two teachers off at my school with actual covid since in started. The rest has been because of shielding and contact.
OP, I teach year 5 so no vaccinations. DD is in reception so no vaccinations. I'll be 30 weeks pregnant. Can't afford not to work. Can't keep DD off school. You really do need to just get on with it. If you get it you get it.

WhenSheWasBad · 29/12/2021 09:26

This is mild. I have several friends with Covid the moment. All are tripled vaccinated. All of them are feeling pretty rubbish with it. They will be fine though, just a week of feeling crap and then hopefully they will be back to their old selves.

Mild doesn’t mean you cough a bit but you are mostly fine. It means you don’t need to go to hospital.

MarshaBradyo · 29/12/2021 09:47

It’s a really wide range. Ds did actually cough a few times and that was it for the week. We did an LFT on the off chance

Other dc did have fatigue and more typical symptoms, but dh and I nothing so far and hard to tell if asymptomatic or just vaccine stopped it

Yes we will switch to home learning. Likely with the school support[/quote]
Have you checked this with the school?

DolphinFC · 29/12/2021 10:00

Not sure how many classes will be open anyway

The second it was announced that NYE was normal the staff WhatApps group exploded as teachers at my school made plans to go clubbing. 9 out of 20 teachers at my primary will be out on the town on Friday.

Covidworries · 29/12/2021 10:01

@DolphinFC
Last time we removed from school due to shielding and medical advice they were supportive and understanding. I didnt expect work andi set work myself so no extra work for the school. We would do the same this time.
Quite frankly although we are expecting the school to be understanding and supportive even if they werent we will still make a judgement on what is best for our circumstances.

canary1 · 29/12/2021 10:05

Mine will be in school - this is a good as it is going to get in our society right now. Sure, there will be disruption throughout society when people catch it and have yo isolate, but then we go back to business. I’m cautiously optimistic!

DolphinFC · 29/12/2021 10:06

Fair enough.

Silverswirl · 29/12/2021 10:07

@chinook

You can have the vaccine 28 days after a positive covid test, not 3 months.

My DD had hers in November about 35 days after testing positive.

That’s old advice. It’s 3 months now because of increased risks to having the vaccine to soon after covid.
Silverswirl · 29/12/2021 10:24

@Watapalava

It’s 12 weeks for healthy under 18s from covid to first jab but round here they are all doing it at 28 days since 12+ can have it then if vulnerable or living with vulnerable

Both ds vax this week and only 5 weeks post covid

I did it to get them covid travel passports for Easter

Try a walk in site

So you have put your kids at increased unnecessary risk against guidance for the sake of a holiday? 😢

Are the rest of the population expected to isolate themselves? Teachers (and doctors and nurses) are allowed a social life.

Lougle · 29/12/2021 10:55

DD1 is vulnerable but not immunosuppressed. She was turned away 9½ weeks after COVID for her 2nd vaccination.

I’ve read delta gives you no protection from omicron

Delta gives you considerable protection from omicron, much more than the vaccine.

Do you have a source for delta being more protective than the vaccine? I wasn't aware of that.
Sallydimebar · 29/12/2021 11:40

@sirfredfredgeorge sorry not seen anywhere delta gives you protection from omicron.

@WhenSheWasBad yes mild and all triple vaccinated, my DS not had one jab and il be sending him into a building with 400+ kids .

@neveradullmoment99

I have to laugh at people saying that their children will be going in. Goodluck when all the teaching staff are off with it. Oh thats right, they have the retired to come in and be the supply teachers. Its going to be a complete shit show.
Obviously if the school has to close then the DC can't go in - I am not quite sure why that is amusing? If school is open, my DC will be in. If it is closed then obviously they won't, it isn't rocket science, or terribly amusing!

I really don't blame them one bit!

I hadn’t realised this either

The recent delta wave in the age group might help then

Goodluck when all the teaching staff are off with it.

Yeah I don't see what's amusing about this either. Our school will do its very best with the available teachers and if some lessons have to cancelled, then so be it.

The reduction in isolation time from 10 to 7 days will hopefully help in this regard.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 29/12/2021 11:58

Our son will be in. He's year 11 Can't miss any more proper schooling. If I wanted to be a teacher I would have been one but I don't have the temperament to be one - I know my limitations..! It's been revising revising revising this Xmas for mocks. I'm not allowed to test him because I have no patience........😬
