We've just had covid but genuinely curious what others are doing. Many people are saying they are doing regular lft tests because so many people have covid right now and before seeing vulnerable family members.

We haven't lft tested since our isolation ended which was in the last week.

I've been surprised today that my parents and siblings are not doing regular lft's! I know they aren't compulsory but my grandma and uncle who live together and see my family regularly are vulnerable due to age or health issues - but triple boosted.

My grandma doesn't really grasp how serious covid is. She's pretty healthy but still a risk in 80's! She's pretty chilled about it.

My parents and siblings are all going out and about too which of course they can but 2 of my siblings are totally unvaccinated as don't want it, the other has had 2 jabs but refusing booster. Parents are double jabbed but don't want booster! No mask wearing etc. I know you can still get covid with jabs but transmission is reduced.

We are meant to be seeing them this week. If we hadn't already had covid very recently I'd be really concerned but I'm hoping that because we've just had it, that we will be protected but say we had delta, concerned about omicron.

But why do you think it’s necessary to test every day?

rrhuth · 27/12/2021 22:04
@santaclothes does it genuinely not concern you the sheer volume of plastics being thrown into the LFTs?! 🤯
It is a concern and there is talk that the amount of plastic in each test is excessive - but there is a lot of plastic/etc involved in treating someone in ICU also, so with covid it is swings and roundabouts I think.

Peppermint81 · 27/12/2021 22:05

Yes always do an LFT before seeing family/friends, especially indoors. I do not want to be responsible for giving others covid.

People that don't are just selfish c*nts who clearly don't care for the people they are seeing

rrhuth · 27/12/2021 22:06

@Woofington

If we are leaving the house. We also only meet with those who have done tests. Lots refusing though. It's like an ostrich effect, people don't want to know so bury their heads. Selfish I think.

Bingo!!!! ‘Selfish’

How selfish to be chucking plastic and taxpayers money away every single time you leave the house, when you could be taking basic sanitation measures including ventilation, keeping distance and not relying on a test which is not 100% accurate and which we are all paying for. Selfish I think.

This makes no sense - you can wash your hands all you like but given covid is airborne it is still possible to catch it unless you do not go into any indoor setting including for work.
BoredtoTiers · 27/12/2021 22:06

Testing when we meet up with people indoors or outdoor drinks where we're in close proximity. Not testing otherwise, but currently on holiday and otherwise WFH so at relatively low risk of catching it or passing it on outside the odd small scale meet up with friends / family.

When DH was going into an office once a week, he'd test before as well, but we're otherwise very low risk of getting it or passing it on, so no need to test to a specific schedule.

HailAdrian · 27/12/2021 22:08

One day, we won't be able to test anymore at all and that day can't come soon enough.

Chewbecca · 27/12/2021 22:09

We’re almost out of LFTs, school only gave one box, none in the chemist and no postal options. So we won’t be testing much over the coming weeks, numbers might go down!

santaclothes · 27/12/2021 22:10

We are being asked to test when meeting up with people or travelling so it's perhaps the opposite of selfish to be doing what we are asked?

pradavilla · 27/12/2021 22:17

I don't test. I have some in the house but I've only done them before if I was feeling a bit rough and thought there's a chance I cld have it.

I've been for quite a few pcr tests though. I've heard from a lot of different sources that the lfts aren't very accurate. Quite a few friends and relatives were negative on lft but positive on pcr.

KylieKoKo · 27/12/2021 22:19

@WheelieBinPrincess

Well as a close contact government advice is to test every day. But I'm testing before I get on public transport or anywhere where I'll be spending time with people indoors.

We’re asked to test for crowded indoor spaces (eg where you might need a covid pass) or meeting someone who is particularly vulnerable. Not for meeting 40 yr old Bob who is triple vaxxed and his kids who probably test all the time for school.

What an enormous waste, and I bet everyone carefully recycles their home plastics whilst literally chucking money and plastic out every, single, day.

santaclothes · 27/12/2021 22:26

We are asked to test before socialising so I don't get to decide if that's meeting vulnerable Fred or triple vaxed Bob.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/12/2021 22:31

No I'm not.

Matterti · 27/12/2021 22:34

We’re not - only in the cases mentioned above, not anytime you meet anyone. LFTs are not limitless, as much as the entitled might like to think they are ‘free’.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/12/2021 22:37

People are kidding themselves as well if they think doing LFTs means they'll never infect anyone with Covid. My work colleague gave me Covid despite doing daily LFTs, because by the time they showed up positive it was too late and she'd already infected 2 of us.

santaclothes · 27/12/2021 22:38

@Matterti

From the Scottish government...

You should take a LFD test twice a week. Over the festive period you should also take a LFD before socialising or travelling. This might mean you test more regularly.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 27/12/2021 22:39

Omg.

How much plastic and resources will be utterly wasted along with every thing else if your an asymptotic carrier merrily passing it around?

I'm do at least twice a week for works requirements but usually four times a week. When not at work but going out I've been testing after.
This week I've not tested as we have not been anywhere.
I can't get my head around the fuss of testing.

DaisyNGO · 27/12/2021 22:40

@Smartiepants79

My grandma doesn't really grasp how serious covid is. She's pretty healthy but still a risk in 80's! She's pretty chilled about it Or maybe she’s just choosing to not live her life in fear. In your 80’s any disease is higher risk. What do you want her to do? Stay in on her own forever?
Just what I was thinking

My parents are mid 80s, they can't stay in for the rest of their lives.

Fair enough @santaclothes different rule for England where I’d say most people are not testing. I’ve never done one but family members have. I don’t think that’s unusual.

MileyWiley · 27/12/2021 22:48

No as I tested negative all last week on LFT before getting a PCR as husband started showing symptoms and was positive on PCR. Low and behold I’m positive on PCR but still negative on LFT. Triple jabbed and quite poorly now. LFT clearly aren’t worth fucking shite.

Hotcoffee10 · 27/12/2021 22:51

Far too many LFTs and PCRs being done, no evidence they are effective in reducing Covid rates. LFTs should be for screening healthcare staff working in high risk environments only not healthy kids going to school FGS. PCR only for hospital admission high risk people where they might alter treatment in the community. Everyone else please just stay at home if unwell, rest, hot drinks etc just like 2019 and every year before that.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/12/2021 22:54

Every day as dh is CEV.

We had a letter last week saying they were sending him a pcr to do if he’s symptomatic and if he’s positive a clinician will ring him within 24hrs so their obviously still concerned about the CEV.

SagittariusDwarf · 27/12/2021 22:59

No I am not testing as a precaution. I last did in early Dec as we had to if we wanted to attend work Xmas party. Prior to that I have no idea when I last tested.

Pootle40 · 27/12/2021 23:06

@elvis4nuts

Every day. Why wouldn't you with the numbers as horrendous as they are? It's free and takes less than 2 minutes.

You don't do It for yourself. You do it to protect others. And hope that others are doing the same for you.

That is nuts
