My 15-year-old daughter had covid 12 weeks ago. She’s tested positive again this evening (very strong line on LF test, pcr booked for tomorrow), having had the first vaccine dose this morning!! (She wasn’t allowed it before now due to previous infection).
I guess it’s the new variant avoiding immunity… She’s feeling really rough now. Is there any concern mixing the vaccine with an actual infection? Obviously, she wouldn’t have had it if she had been unwell earlier… her LF this am was negative.

Why did she take a test after the vaccine? It’s possible she’s positive from the vaccine not from actual covid

You cannot be positive from a vaccine. It is not a live vaccine.

That is absolutely incorrect!

Notsomerryandbright · 27/12/2021 19:38

The vaccine can’t produce positive lfts. It will be omicron most likely.

The vaccine won’t have any real impact except maybe make her feel a bit worse if she was going to have side effects anyway.

It won’t have time to do anything with the virus this time but should mean she’s left with a lot of antibodies

stiltonandcrackers · 27/12/2021 19:41

She could be more poorly as her immune system is now getting a double whammy, one from the infection and the other trigger from a pseudo virus, for want of another way to describe it. This is just really bad luck and happened to a friend of mine.

It's why they won't give you any vaccine while you are unwell.

@roses2
The vaccine does not give positive results on LFT or PCR tests

@roses2 That's not how the vaccine works. It's not a live virus so would be impossible for it to lead to a negative test. www.coventry.gov.uk/info/265/health_protection/3830/covid-19_coronavirus_vaccines/2

Please don't post nonsense like this. It's why so much misinformation goes about.
Tryingtryingandtrying · 27/12/2021 19:46

Lfts don't react to the virus but to a protein you produce when infected. Do we definitely not produce that protein in reaction to vaccine? Presumably side effects are a reaction. How do we know know no proteins are produced. Pcr def viral particles

1happyhippie · 27/12/2021 19:56

Are you saying she took a test this morning (negative), went for a covid jab, then took another test this evening that was positive?
Can I ask what made you test twice in one day?
That’s really bad luck if she’s positive @Graciemacey
It will be difficult to tell if she’s feeling rubbish because of the vaccine or the virus!

boomboomboom123 · 27/12/2021 20:00

I caught covid a couple of days after my booster jab. At first I didn't test for a couple of days as assumed it was just side effects of the booster to be honest. I was very achey, headaches and fatigue initially never really got a cough but did have a tight chest for a few days. I'm on day 12 now and I feel so much better. Hope she is ok.

She had scratchy throat this afternoon and streaming eyes, then started coughing and bad headache… didn’t seem like normal side effects so we tested again. I couldn’t believe it when we got an instant positive. She feels really ill now, poor girl. Her sister has also tested positive this eve… Sad

It detects a protein from the virus. The virus is made up of a number of proteins. Most LFTs detect the N protein. The virus - including that protein - replicates within our cells. We do not produce that protein in response to it.

The vaccines trigger the production of the S protein, which is different from the N protein most of the LFTs detect.

There is no plausible mechanism by which any of the vaccines could trigger someone to test positive, either on LFT or PCR.

FictionalCharacter · 27/12/2021 20:24

She’s simply been very unlucky.

Please people, be careful to avoid misinformation!

You can’t test positive from having the vaccine. The vaccine causes your body to make only spike protein. LFTs do NOT detect spike protein, they detect a different viral protein (nucleocapsid protein).

The PCR tests detect viral RNA sequences, not actual virus particles. They test for three carefully selected different sequences from different parts of the virus. Spike protein in your body produced as a result of vaccination does not produce a positive result.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 27/12/2021 20:27

Sorry to hear about your daughter OP. I hope it passes quickly. Unfortunately it seems that having had delta recently isn't much protection against Omicron.

The idea that the LFTs could react to the vaccine is a bit laughable: do you not think the companies investing their money and scientists their credibility and professional reputation might have thought of this and avoided the possibility?
