Do we all just need to get it?

So this new variant is really virulent, we went out just over a week ago and more than half our party of 12 have now got covid.

Thankfully no one is really ill with it, people have got a sore throat, bit of a headache, slight temp but nothing else.

So with that in mind (and I know there may be a few who get it bad) why are we isolating? Do we just need to all get it?

This isn't goady, we're all isolating and have taken the correct tests, just trying to see if this could just end (in an optimistic way!)

@rrhuth I’m not a supporter of BJ or a Conservative voter.

If the gamble goes wrong, what do you predict this will do to young people and children?

Lifeisnteasy · 27/12/2021 17:19

@rrhuth you’ll have to break down where I went wrong before you can change my mind.

There are currently ~1300 hospitalisations for covid I believe you are confusing the daily figure with the total figure

By now, Christmas socialising (bar the day itself) will be showing itself in the numbers Absolutely not Confused - Christmas Day was only TWO days ago - some people will just be starting to show symptoms and people will be c. two weeks away from needing hospital treatment

Omicron is widely believed to be milder than delta - Irrelevant if you have more cases you get to the same place just a few days later

If our health service is under such strain that a fluctuation of less than 1% can bring it to its knees, then we have a big problem, and it isn’t covid - If you think covid is not understandably causing a big problem for the NHS you are living on another planet

Whatever my concerns, as a patriot I hope for as few deaths as you do.

I also don't think that the number of deaths should be our main target. There will always be deaths from various causes, unfortunately. We could spend a fortune to try and avoid these, but I think the costs of preventing them would outweigh the benefits for society overall.

I think you misunderstand what we are discussing by 'deaths'. If the NHS is overwhelmed, the deaths including in e.g. young cancer sufferers will be appearing our excess death stats for years to come. Those deaths matter.

Of course we will always have deaths, no one is aiming for immortality Hmm.

Do you really not care if someone's 50-something husband who could have survived in 2019 dies in 2022? Those are the deaths I am talking about. If Johnson has gambled incorrectly, we may have serious issues including the limiting of cancer care, surgery, etc.
