Cold-run down- tonsillitis ?

I don't really know what I wanna put here or what answers I am hoping for - perhaps for people to let me know if they have experienced these symptoms since covid too?! I kinda wanna know if it's a result of not mixing for such a long time. I've tested negative for covid

I have caught two colds this winter. I can always manage with colds and they are just a pain and annoying and then they go. But these colds have resulted in these symptoms:

  • a blocked nose to the point I literally cannot breathe through nose at all and nothing clears it
  • incredibly dry back of mouth
  • inflamed tonsils with white spots (antibiotics didn't clear it last time as it is viral and not bacterial! I always get bacterial tonsillitis and this is definitely not the same as bacterial proper floor me!!)
  • waking up in the early hours unable to get back to sleep because I cannot breathe whatsoever through my nose
  • utter exhaustion
  • coughing
  • incredibly sore dry mouth and throat that is almost painful at times
  • loss of voice
  • lasts for a month

I am not one to talk about health and I am overall lucky to have a great immune system and rarely get ill , but this is just depressing me now . I am stressed at the moment with a house move and working around a toddler but surely that can't be it ?!

It’s possible it’s to do with the mask wearing for nearly 2 years, few theories floating about that it means our immune systems are a bit out of practice or that there’s just some stinkers doing the rounds. You will be ok. Drink plenty, hot drinks are soothing - herbal teas and lemon hot water and ginger. Steam inhalation can help with the dry sore throat. Rest properly if able and eat plenty of the good stuff, fruit and veg. Wishing you quick recovery. I’ve had one after another, bloody sick of it now. Brew

@Fishlipandtoeface thank you for your reply. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has had it one after the other !! I too am sick of it and am longing for warmer weather now to hopefully clear the winter bugs away!!!
It wouldn't surprise me if the mask wearing and social distancing and isolation has had an impact on our immune systems - it would definitely make sense ! What a world we live in at the moment !!! Crazy times!!

Just wanted to say that you’re not alone! I have exactly the same symptoms and currently have had no voice for the past 3 days (DH says it’s a Christmas miracle 😒)
It’s crap isn’t it? I find the worst part is the waking all the time when all I want to do is sleep 😩 I’m off for a pcr tomorrow just to be extra sure (I’ve been lateral flow testing every day and they’ve all been negative).
Sending lots of get well soon wishes your way.

@PosyBoo thank you for taking the time to comment and reassure me that I'm not alone. Do you have the swollen tonsils too?
I would be so grateful if you could let me know what your PCR test says! I have ordered one to come to the house which I'm waiting on- but like you I have tested negative on lateral flows every day. I'll post again when I get the PCR results but I really would be shocked if it turns out to be covid, I've had this twice now and my family haven't had the same symptoms as me at all!

I have those symptoms when I'm run down. I also did a PCR last week to check & that was negative. When my tonsils get swollen & the white spots pop up, it's a sign I've overdone it & am a bit stressed.
What works for me: salty gargles for the tonsils, during day & night - keep a glass in bathroom & gargle if you wake at night.
Paracetamol & rest when you're able. Hope you feel better.

DontPeeInThePlayHouse · 27/12/2021 08:37

I've got the same kinda cold ATM, although it's gone to my sinuses. It's miserable, so much snot and the cough just won't stop. Negative PCR came back yesterday. Thankfully my throat is much less sore today and tonsils are looking a bit less inflamed. So fricking tired and sore from all the coughing.

Hope you're feeling better soon. Lots of hot drinks, humidifiers with essential oils can be amazing for congestion and sore throats. Mines been running pretty much constantly the past few days.

SpiderFluff · 27/12/2021 08:44

The saline spray you get for small children is great try that. But yeah we've had something awful here too. Negative tests all round.

CommanderBurnham · 27/12/2021 11:18

Try a steam inhalation to unclog things. Also a hydrogen peroxide gargle to kill the bugs in your throat.

Also I had these symptoms for 5 days before I tested positive for coronavirus. It feels like sinusitis and tonsillitis and a cold combined with a touch of flu thrown in for me.
