How did you find out it was omicron? Dd tested positive the day after coming home for Xmas. We've all just had delta (at least, I presume it was!) and I'm a little nervous she's brought omicron and we could get it again Confused

We didn't.

DD tested positive on Friday 17th after lots of cases in her school (She's 16). Symptoms of sore throat, headache and fatigue indicate omicron rather than the classic covid as she's never had a cough or loss of taste/smell.

But we haven't been told one way or the other. We've had one text saying she was positive and to book PCR tests for the rest of the household and that's it. I think a lot of people are like us and just making the assumption.

Frazzled2207 · 26/12/2021 10:21

I believe some people are told but the vast majority are not as only 20% or so of tests are ever genetically sequenced

onemouseplace · 26/12/2021 10:24

We haven’t been told but timing, location and symptoms make me pretty sure that’s what we’ve all had.

dottyaboutstripes · 26/12/2021 10:33

Yes I am thinking we probably won't know. She seems to just have a sore throat and stuffy nose which we didn't have - that's what's making me wonder.
I'm sick to death of the whole thing 😭

My friend had asymptomatic presumably delta ( found through close contact testing) about a month ago and now has symptomatic presumably omicron. So it looks like having delta recently doesn't stop you getting omicron. She had the booster 3 weeks before the delta. She also had the original strain in 2020 so this is her 3Rd time.

JanglyBeads · 26/12/2021 10:35

They were telling you at the same time as your positive result if you had S gene drop out / suspected omicron, IF your sample had been processed by a lab that could detect this. And then the confirmed result after sequencing although that might be at least a week later (and could be from any random samples).

But with the majority of cases in most places now being omicron I guess they'll stop doing that soon.

Well this is why I'm a bit concerned, I know having had delta won't protect from omicron ...

I wasn’t told but I’m sure I had omicron. Sore throat, aches, raging temperature, night sweats. No other symptoms. It must have been.

MonAlana · 26/12/2021 10:43

I haven’t done the pcr yet but symptoms are scratchy throat, and strange back ache, a cough, congestion, headache - all resolving after 48 hours of initial positive lateral flow. I’m not vaccinated and never had covid before to my knowledge so assume this is omicron since it’s quick!

Underhisi · 26/12/2021 10:46

If it is very recent it is probably omicron.

anonanonanon123 · 26/12/2021 10:49

My mums friend asked track and trace and was told they're not checking, just counting everyone as omicron. No wonder the numbers are massive, they just make it up as they go along!

highashope · 26/12/2021 10:57

I had a text message from the NHS a few days after my pcr result, must’ve been in the minority who’s sample was checked

Yes they will only be checking a percentage of positive tests. Perhaps choosing a geographical spread or whatever.
Mrsfrumble · 26/12/2021 12:55

I’m guessing so because we’re in London, where apparently 90% of cases are now omicron. Also our symptoms were mild and over in a couple of days.

UserBot · 26/12/2021 12:58

I don't know for sure.

roughly 21st December I had a sore throat that came and went for just seconds. Like a 'flash' of sore throat. Also had a runny nose, then 22nd I had a headache, I was at work before I thought, ''I have a headache'''

Off 23rd and vomited all morning. Felt rough.

I know it was covid. It was rife at work that week. Everybody came down with it the same week after all of us dodging it for 2 years. Taht's omicron I guess.

I feel better now. So I'm as certain as I can be it was omicron. What else could it be. Vomiting for no reason?

There are no tests to be had where I am. They've run out.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/12/2021 13:00

DD had it (early December). We don't officially know it was Omicron but all the symptoms ticked the box. And then we got it too. We've emerged t'other side but DS just home from uni hasn't knowingly had it (although he was poorly with a real bad throat infection in late November).

EewwwDavid · 26/12/2021 13:01

I've got covid now but I reckon it's delta. I can't taste or smell anything and that's my only symptoms.
Not looking forward to no doubt getting Omicron as soon as I'm allowed out again!

Evza · 26/12/2021 13:41

It is possible op. I presumably had delta at the start of December. Pcr positive. Then tested negative on lateral flow on day 11.

Just before Xmas, I woke up feeling like I had the flu. Lateral showed positive and so did a pcr. Different symptoms this time. I've got a cold, nightsweats and completely exhausted.

Covidclaire · 26/12/2021 13:45

I’m sure I heard they’d already stopped.

Test and trace contacted me and told me. I then received lots of texts and emails telling me as well!

They will have said that they can't check everyone's and that it's best to assum omicron at this stage.

They are still looking at suspected case numbers and sequencing a sample of all positives, as they have for the past 12+ months.

They are not "making it up"
