Lost sense of taste and smell two months after Covid

I had a mild case of Covid in late October and lost my sense of taste and smell for about two weeks. It then came back but only to around 80% capacity.

Last week I came down with a cough and cold and have completely lost my taste and smell again. Lateral flows and PCR were all negative so it’s definitely not Covid. I’ve never fully lost my taste and smell from a cold before.

Has anyone else had this?

NHS website says

a cold or flu
sinusitis (sinus infection)
an allergy, like hay fever
growths in your nose (nasal polyps)
These can cause:

loss of smell (anosmia)
smelling things that are not there (phantosmia), like smoke or burnt toast
reduced sense of smell (hyposmia)
the smell of things to change (parosmia)

I've had it with severe sinusitis. But you could have covid again you know you should test

Sorry: test agin!

I often loose sense of smell and taste with a normal cold.

Seems it’s just me then!

It’s definitely not Covid as confirmed by multiple tests. I’ve never fully lost my taste and smell from a cold before. Worried that it’ll never come back again now.

Did you get it back @2021begone ?

BeetyAxe · 23/01/2022 22:44

I’m four months down the line from my first bout of covid. Taste returned about a month after, smell has not come back normally since. Had covid again last week, now my taste is away again and I have a permanent smell of sweetness in my nose. It’s horrible and depressing.

@itsacovidxmasone I'm pleased to say that my sense of smell and taste did return about six days after starting this thread! Such a relief.

That's great news OP!

@BeetyAxe talk to your GP, my DH is being referred to an ENT specialist now as he's still having parosmia 16 months on. I'm hoping they can help!

BeetyAxe · 26/01/2022 08:09

Thank you @itsacovidxmasone. I will do that, because it’s really impacting my everyday life. Things like food burning because I forget it’s in the oven, forgetting I put bleach down and. It smelling it, and missing the lovely smell of my DC as well. Anything is worth a try.

Glad to see it returned I have a friend that always loses their taste when they have a cold even before covid. It always come back gradually a few days later. Maybe covid has done that to your functions and that’s a symptom you get with to a cold.
