11 year olds...

So, my 11 year old is at secondary, she couldn't have the vaccine due to her age, like many in her year, just under 12.

Now we are recommending 12-15 year olds get boosters.

We are recommending 5-11 vulnerable kids get a vaccine.

What happens to this list group of 11 year olds who don't fit into either category?

They gave to mix in a group of fully vaccinated school children, with no vaccine. Does this sound a little odd?

They haven't fallen through the cracks, you just need to wait till they are 12.

12-15 are getting 2nd doses not boosters
Vulnerable 5-11 are to get a dose
At some point they will no doubt offer the vaccine to all 5-11.

Not as many germs as at primary, if most of the others are vaccinated…

No herd immunity when all the 11 year olds are in the same class as each other! They're not mixing with the vaccinated year groups!

She will get it in the 5-11 bracket surely? But that’s not for everyone yet, just vulnerable.

We have middle schools here (years 5,6,7,8), half are primary rules (masks, testing and vaccines) and the other half is secondary rules. All equals chaos!

They haven't fallen through any cracks as younger children are not being jabbed either. It's not like they are jabbing all primary students but not 11 year olds at secondary.

Not all 12-15 year olds are having the vaccine anyway so it’s not like it’s only the young year 7’s who aren’t vaccinated in the school. She’ll be able to get it when she’s 12 or if/when they roll it out to younger children before that.

It will be a problem if you want to travel this summer. They’ll need two jabs to go to most countries before August. Tricky if you have a May/June/July birthday.

I know it's frustrating, my DS is also 11 and not eligible until April

It's particularly frustrating for me because in my home country they are giving the vaccine to 5-11 year olds with no issues

Not much we can do about it unfortunately

If it helps, the Director General of the World Health Organisation has said that we shouldn’t be prioritizing vaccinating children in high income countries.

They haven’t called through the cracks at all. The age cut off has to be somewhere and at the moment it’s 12+. Doesn’t matter if your child is in secondary school, special school, middle school or home school. It’s 12+ Because that’s all that’s been approved? And no, there is no kind of super virus just because they are in secondary school as opposed to primary school!!?

they wont be in a group of "fully vaccinated children" at secondary, so far only around 45% of 12 -15 year olds have been vaccinated with even a first dose, (although a good percentage will have had covid already with or without vaccines) why do you think there is a "different pool of germs"????

There would be heaps of students unjabbed at our school as Covid went through late October so they aren't eligible yet, it's not just 11 year olds.

P.S. theres a good chunk of the vulnerable in the UK that haven't been able to access their boosters because they are housebound or unable to access the jabs easily at vaccine centres so are waiting for staff to visit them at home , thats the group who are falling through the cracks ,not non-vulnerable 11 year olds.

The jabs should be going to adult boosters (and vulnerable children). Healthy children (who don't live with vulnerable people) should be a long way back in the queue.

She's August born so waiting an entire year longer than most of her peers, and like you say, travel chaos

Same here, my daughter will be 12 in August too. I wish they had the cut off as secondary school age really but 12 was the internationally approved age. Hopefully it will be available to all 5-11 year olds soon. I want every child to at least have the option of vaccination.

An 11 year old would need a child's dose so the government couldn't just include all secondary students.
