Did this all start with a Pangolin?!

Hi, My DH says this all came from a Pangolin. Is that right? I've tried to read online but it's hard to know what is reputable and what isn't. Does anyone know where it came from yet? I know there was talk of a wet market and bats.

@Whatwouldscullydo

No it started with us.

Did humans really expect we could destroy the planet, leave out fifth everywhere , destroy habitats and force animals nature kept apart with distance or nocturnal habits etc to be I'm such close proximity to eachother, and who spend their days in equal measure either trying to cure or kill eachother, without consequence?

I am no crazy environmentalist but I 100% agree with this. However/wherever it started, it jumped species and spread because the way we live is unsustainable. It is disproportionately killing the weak so is Darwinist as well.
nannybeach · 22/12/2021 14:50

No, not bats or wet market either. Virus never found there. 80 different animals checked,no Covid found. WHO took a year to visit labs in China. Last articles I read, extracts from books, said lab made,lab leaked. 2012 athletes falling ill From mystery virus. Miners clearing out bat caves strange pneumonia type illness.

My Mon - Thurs lodger came back February 17th 2020 day after my birthday from being at home for the weekend saying what do you think about the Wuhan flu I had not one idea what he was talking about. He talks a bit too much most of the time so I paid not much attention until he said yes my mate Dave - ex special forces I saw him at the weekend said there’s a virus leaked from the wuhan lab as a way of shedding people it’ll be here soon. I thought he was talking complete nonsense sadly he wasn’t and considering no one had heard of Wuhan then and had no idea about anything that was to come I totally believe that’s what happened

Ellowyn · 22/12/2021 14:59

@BeesRGood

It started when an elephant made love to a pig!
I saw that episode. Grin
HunkyPunk · 22/12/2021 15:02

The coronavirus pandemic started in Wuhan.

There is an Institute of Virology in Wuhan.

The Institute of Virology in Wuhan has documented experiments with bat coronavirus over many years, including the successful infection of a human cell line with bat coronavirus in 2015.

As they say, If it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck…

@RaisedByPangolins

Well that seems a tad unfair!
Sorry!

Well if your lodger’s mate Dave says it’s lab-made then that’s case-closed, got your reputable sources right here, OP!

Pangolin soup

Silverswirl · 22/12/2021 15:04

@TheKeatingFive

As usual most horrible mess on this planet comes from us.

At a planet level it's not a horrible mess at all. Fewer humans = a positive development.

Yes true but I meant horrible messes from a human point of view

PlanktonsComputerWife · 22/12/2021 15:10

They must have been discussing this unproven nonsense at school, because my DD came home and told me it started with a penguin.

KloppKrazy · 22/12/2021 15:12

The poor pangolins getting dragged into this
It's like blaming some weird outbreak near Porton Down on the local badgers.

Covid was already well established here in the U.K. on Feb 17th 2020.

That's why so many people died in March and April 2020.

The UK's first deaths from covid were in January.

In February 17th 2020 our company was sorting out how to work from home, and from the 24th February we all did.

Milan Fashion Week was virtual that same February. No audiences by the catwalk.

Wasn't there a "worried about covid" thread on Mumsnet from January 2020 onwards?

IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 22/12/2021 15:17

There is no evidence whatsoever that pangolins are involved in covid emerging or spreading.

MrsLarry · 22/12/2021 15:17

Nah. It came from a lab. And unfortunately China will never be taken to task for the hell they've unleashed on us.

Bubblty · 22/12/2021 15:19

So if we will never know is someone watching out for the next one in all the places it could emerge?

BusterGonad · 22/12/2021 15:20

I heard about covid when I was in Japan in December 2019, there was an article in a newspaper about a strange pneumonia type illness going around (wet markets?) China. It must have been a worrying article as I remembered it when all the covid stuff came out in the following months.

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/12/2021 15:21

The UK's first deaths from covid were in January

People on MN were called conspiracy theorists when they suggested it had been here longer than had been stated at the time

Only to be vindicated when it emerged that a death had been traced back to January.

December 2019 a similar sounding illness , went thru us all at work. My dd2 has had a cough ever since she caught and incubated whatever it was I had then.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 22/12/2021 15:23

I firmly believe it escaped from the lab in Wuhan. Coronaviruses have been around as long as humans have but this one is unlike any others found in nature.

As a previous poster said “if it quacks like a duck”…

LadyCampanulaTottington · 22/12/2021 15:25

The UK's first deaths from covid were in January

Blood was taken from cancer patients for a study in September 2019 in northern Italy. When the blood was tested last year out of curiosity there were covid 19 antibodies found. It’s been around longer than they said.

jesuistot · 22/12/2021 15:28

I’m sure I read an article about a theory linking it to some cave workers back in 2012? I’ll have to have a look again as it was very interesting.

Who knows how it really came about.

I find the different theories really fascinating for some reason. Just the idea that potentially few freak occurrences and moments has wrecked so much havoc.

Advance · 22/12/2021 15:37

@Bubblty

If you look at what is likely to have happened this time, it doesn't really matter about 'watching out', plenty of warnings were given in the years before about safety and what was going on.

Most of the people 'watching out' for things like this just used it as an opportunity to make lots of money, not to help people

AndARiverBeneathYourFeet · 22/12/2021 15:39

@Bubblty

Yes.

Basically if ebola or marburg start to spread faster and/or mutate, it will make covid look like a day at the seaside. People devote their whole careers to virus research and pandemic readiness. It's authorities and governments who take away funding or ignore important meetings (HELLO, DE PFEFFEL) that are the problem. You can lead a horse to water etc.

Jenjenn · 22/12/2021 15:40

Before c19 humans were already hosts for several coronaviruses that originated from bats. Until c19 the coronaviruses that made the jump into humans were either too mild (sniffles) or too severe (mers with 35% fatality rate!) to cause a pandemic. So yeah it's from bats, maybe via pangolin maybe not.

Bubblty · 22/12/2021 15:41

Thanks there's loads of clever people here! I cant keep up with all the news and research so thanks.
